I given them shit for losing, so kudos to Atlanta United for winning Saturday. That being said, they remain in last place.

I checked on my fermenting pickles on Friday and was aghast. There is a white coating on the top of the fluid. Now I have to figure out if it is Kahm yeast, which is non-toxic and can be washed off, or mold, which is not desired and will render the entire batch as inedible and needing to be discarded. Obviously I’m hoping for the former, and it being white instead of blue, red, or black is good, but it’s scary looking in any case.

The ITP Estate’s HVAC worked overtime this weekend pulling about three gallons of moisture out of the air on Saturday, and another three gallons on Sunday. Considering I used eleven gallons last week to water parts of Wee Little Farm, this collection is beneficial even if it requires electricity to generate it.

On Saturday morning I awoke with a hurting big left toe. I didn’t kick anything, nor did I stub my toe, so I don’t think it’s fractured/broken. I don’t think that I was bitten/stung by anything overnight. Gout? Other than eating ice cream I purchased on Friday it’s not like I’ve changed my diet recently. Who knows? I do know that it hurt all day Saturday, to the point where I left my volunteer shift at UFO early. It also helped me decide to not see any live music Saturday night since I didn’t want to be on my feet. I was hoping my toe would return to normal by yesterday morning, but since you are reading this sentence you know that it didn’t. In fact it has gotten more swollen.

At least I made waffles for breakfast yesterday, this time using the recipe from the book “When Southern Women Cook”.

Here are the cookbook recipes that I have prepared this year, in the order in which they were prepared:

  • “Beefy Noodle Skillet” from “Ramen Noodle Recipes”
  • “Hoisin-Glazed Baby Back Ribs” from “Milk Street Instant Pot” by Christopher Kimball
  • “Chicken and Smoked Sausage Gumbo” from “Louisiana Real & Rustic” by Emeril Lagasse
  • “Drunken Noodles with Chicken” from “The Complete Cooking for Two” by America’s Test Kitchen
  • “Ham and Bean Soup” from “‘I Love My Instant Pot’ Affordable Meals” by Aileen Clark
  • “Crisp-Crusted, Feather Light-Raised Waffles” from “CookWise” by Shirley O. Corriher
  • “Cheesy Italian Noodle Bake” from “Ramen Noodle Recipes”
  • “Basic Yeast Bread” from “Irish Food & Cooking” by Bidet White Lennon & Georgina Campbell
  • “Cajun Chicken and Sausage Jambalaya” from “The Essential Instant Pot Cookbook” by Coco Morante
  • “Red Beans and Rice” from “Louisiana Real & Rustic” by Emeril Lagasse
  • “Andouille and Chicken Jambalaya” from “Louisiana Real & Rustic” by Emeril Lagasse
  • “Shrimp and Ham Jambalaya” from “Louisiana Real & Rustic” by Emeril Lagasse
  • “Quick Yeasted Waffles” from “When Southern Women Cook” by America’s Test Kitchen

My only failure has been to not make tasting notes for each recipe.

  1. Is it possible that the Wordle editor(s) are trolling me?

    Wordle in 5.

So we broke camp Saturday and headed out of the mountains with Debbie driving. Swapped drivers in Lenoir after breakfast. As we were passing Greenville, I suddenly had very little power steering and no AC. Debbie pulls up the GMC dealer and we’re approaching that exit. Get into the dealer and no service on Saturday. The Chevy dealer down the street does have Saturday service. I manhandle the truck down there to learn they just offer oil changes and light work. We try to drive away to a nearby Minekie muffler shop next door and the truck won’t move. Debbie sends out an SOS on FB and a friend of a friend comes to her (and Tanner’s) rescue. I get towed to the muffler shop and even though they are closing in an hour and “the book” say a 2 hour repair, they think about taking it on. Unfortunately no parts are available. We wrecker on down to the GMC dealer and leave it with them for repair this morning.

I Uber out to where Debbie is- a lovely little farm South of G’ville where Tanner is being driven crazy by bugs. We decide I will ride home on the scooter and she will stay and hope the truck gets taken care of Monday. I have a VERY HOT ride home and get stuck in stop and go traffic in Gwinette where they are repaving 85! Can you imagine working that?

Sunday, Debbie decides she can’t impose on our new friends any longer and has called Rox and Eddie to borrow their truck. I return to G’ville and rescue her. We’re back home by 6:30.

    I’m tired of driving.

      what a weekend Steve!!!!
and the truck is just up in Greenville, waiting to hear what all it will cost to fix?
Just curious- if the Meineke place could do it (when they got the part) why not just leave it there?

      • Steve says:

While they were very helpful, I decided to stick with the dealer- I didn’t understand everything that failed. Just so much electronic/electrical on that truck. Even the tailgate is an electro-mechanical latch and with a dead battery, I don’t know if we would have gotten unhitched! As it was, we were unloading at the dealer and the tow driver noticed the window was down. We needed a jump box to get that to work!

    • Ugh, sorry to hear that.

    good weekend for me –
Went friday night to a Billy Joel/ Elton John tribute FREE concert in Roswell – & learned all about the King of Pops franchise business – the guy was set up right next to us.

Saturday took Rohan to the airport (relatives visiting this summer is now over)- Korean tacos on the way back north. Then late afternoon & evening outing with Randy & Liz (Pantywaste & Butt sucker) at the Marietta Square – pub crawled around & caught up on life with them.

Sunday we finally went for a bike ride – Allan’s shoulder is finally well enough. It was a hot 20 miles, but we did it. Croatia is looking to be pretty warm while we are there. We started working on packing – I bought a vacuum sealer bag system for the luggage, since we have a connecting flight – I want to do carry-on only. I think it will work well, it will be good for the bike clothes & rain jackets especially.

  4. Back from a walk/hobble to UFO. With it reaching mid-to-high 90s today I wanted to give my raised bed a watering, and I promised I’d do the same for one of my neighbors who is out of country. While there I also pulled more kudzu out of the blueberry trees (very large bushes) so that they have a chance to grow blueberries again next year.

Toe is being a pain, so I’m about to RICE it for awhile before migrating to the basement to beat the heat.

While at the dealer Saturday, the sales manager came out and was very friendly, gave me his card, took a picture of my “night drop envelope” and sent it to the service manager so they would be aware of the urgency (at that time). We chatted a bit about a conversation Debbie and I had about a new 3500!! He’s already sent us a buyout offer on the 2500 and Debbie countered. We may be playing games, but then again…

  6. Jenka says:

Not much to report, you all are a lot more interesting than I. Saturday we had late lunch at General Muir and otherwise watched TV. Sunday we went to the Braves game. Although the stadium was not even half full, our section was packed and the teenage girl sitting next to me was constantly moving and doing things. Plus it was very hot. So we left in the middle of the 7th inning. I’m pretty proud of us for lasting 7 innings, quite frankly.

I’m not sure what your red meat intake is like but your beer intake may lead to gout. Does it hurt to have anything touch your toe? When I had a flare up just the sheet/blanket laying on my foot hurt. It was crazy. On the plus side I have not had another flare up and my beer intake is back to normal 🙂

Friday was spent doing chores, fixing cars (Travis needed brakes), and getting things together for the big move on Wednesday.
Chattahooligans have a racer in the TNGA (Mountain bike race from SC to AL, about 350 miles) that started Saturday. I tried to intercept him at some point to cheer him on. Rode the moto all the way up to lake burton and proceeded to miss him at all the intersections I tried. Not all was lost though as I got to spend the day cruising around the mountains.

    • Steve says:

That course looks like it needs a motorcycle trip…

      • Bob says:

Yes and no, TNGA has a lot of singletrack where motos are not allowed. However, there is the Georgia Traverse that goes from SC to AL and it is mostly gravel roads. I will be doing that one day.

    • Very tender to the touch. I consume red meat but not in great quantities? My beer consumption hasn’t changed in years. So why now? I will abstain from both for awhile and see what transpires. What I am really hoping is to avoid another out-of-pocket doctor’s visit.

  8. Steve says:

Belt, idler pulley, tensioner, $1400. I said to Debbie if it was going to be under $1k, I would be surprised. And we decided if we’re going with a new truck (still a question) we’d deal with the local dealer who needs to be a sponsor of the opening hunt. They have been in other years.

  9. According to USPS one of the pieces of mail due to be delivered to my house today is neither addressed to me, nor does it have my address written on it. Weird. If it really is delivered to me I will walk it to the proper address tomorrow morning.
