On Saturday morning I did my self-appointed civic duty of picking up trash from the ITP-Estate to East Atlanta Village. While there was less trash than normal, it always astonishes me how shitty humans are.

Later on our walk Betsy stopped Molly, a woman that was once part of the Flickr/Twitter crowd back in the day, and introduced us to her. I see Molly out running almost every Saturday, and have seen her thrice on my bike rides to Trees Atlanta on Thursdays. Betsy asked Molly if she knew who I was, to which she politely said “yes”, but I have my doubts. Molly was someone in whom I had much interest, but she was probably too young and pretty to date me, and wound up marrying someone else from our collective.

I have been spending a lot of sweaty hours over three days in WLF digging out a specific, but unknown to me, pernicious and prolific weed from the farm’s borders. A lot of the plants were starting to go to seed, so I needed to do this ASAP. Have I removed all of them yet? Nope. Did I pull them all out with their roots? Nope. Will the return next year? Yep, though I hope not as densely.

I’ve given up watching Atlanta United this season. I predict Tata Martinez will step down as manger/head coach at season’s end.

Last night I made a new version of jambalaya from Emeril Lagasse’s book “Louisiana Real & Rustic”. This jambalaya used shrimp and ham instead of andouille sausage and chicken, and included a can of tomatoes. The fact that I had shrimp and ham which I needed to cook, made it an easy recipe to choose. Would I make it again? Absolutely, but I rarely have shrimp on hand.

  1. I guess the Tour de France has completed? Truth be told, I lost interest days ago when Taddy Pogecar created an unbeatable time gap, and stopped watching. And, I just realized that either Enigma didn’t have a Cheesy Tour de France gathering, or I didn’t get an invite this year.

    Wordle in 4.

Yes the TdF is over and yes, the battle for the yellow jersey was over after day 5. The polka-dot jersey was still in play until Friday. Saturday, we almost had an American stage winner on Alp du Huez day 2 with Sepp Kuss, but he crashed twice in the last few kms and Richard Carapaz was already breathing down his neck.

I managed 20 hot miles on Saturday. Had grand plans for a longer ride, but then I came to my senses. And when I was riding, there was very little shade.

Lunch yesterday with horse friends in Senoia.

Waiting on this weather line to move through. Glenn Burns warned his FB peeps about it but fortunately it mostly stayed west of Atlanta.

    • Good on you for getting out there!

The weed extraction was more than enough manual labor for me this weekend. I now remember how I lost weight in 2020-2021. 😀

And no, there was no Enema TdF watch party- at least that I was aware of.

    • Yeah, I am 90% sure she was a part of the Flickr crowd, but maybe she was more in the Twitter crowd? Cute, blonde, worked for Turner/TBS/Cartoon Network/TNT etc. I thought I had a phot in my feed with her in it, but I do not.

  5. Back from a 16.5 mile, very humid, ride. I set out to ride 25+ miles, but at perhaps the furthest point from home I realized the I hadn’t packed my house keys, and therefore probably hadn’t locked the door. Assuming that the keys were either lying on the ground or in the door lock, I shortened the ride.

    • They were actually lying on the floor of the den. *facepalm*

      • David says:

I know that feeling. The last time I hiked the Grand Canyon a couple of years ago, I was 6 miles into a 14 mile hike, when I realized I didn’t know where the keys to my rental car were. Remarkably, I was able to be zen about it. Either I’d dropped them on the trail, or they were sitting in the hotel room. Wherever they were, I’d face it when I got back to the top.

Thankfully they were sitting on my nightstand right where they belonged. A younger iteration of me would have been absolutely paralyzed by the uncertainty.

        • Figured all would be alright. I wasn’t really feeling the ride so it gave me an out. As penance I forced myself to ride up Hosea from Rocky Ford, a climb I could have skipped by taking another route.

Back in the office after a lovely few days on Amelia Island. Amazingly the weather wasn’t too hot, it was just comfortable. Saturday we flew home and made a quick turnaround to pick up the dog from boarding before they closed. Yesterday I read my book in bed all day, except for the three hours during which I watched the Red Sox game.

This is the last week of the old dean. A week from today we start a new era.

    • Figured you are back at work because my route takes me through Emory and I was all “WTF are all these cars doing here? It’s summer! Shouldn’t these people be on vacation?!?!”

      • Jenka says:

Heh. An R1 university is like a corporation. The only thing that stops during the summer are classes. Everything else chugs along like any other business.

  7. Steve says:

An R1 university is a top-tier research institution, defined by the Carnegie Classifications as a doctoral university with very high research activity, spending at least $50 million annually on research and development while awarding at least 70 research doctorates.

Laura’s sister has given up on the ATL United season tickets but Laura has not. We are going to let ours lapse and take hers (they get Founding Member benefits). Tickets are cheaper and there are only 2 instead of 3 so we will save some money (which I need right now).

Back from a rainy camping weekend in Brevard, great times and still got a really good ride in. We ended up with 15 instead of 25 miles and still climbed over 2000 feet. Climbing wasn’t bad for me with the ebike and the downhills were off the charts awesome. The rains came and went at opportune times as we had a tarp city built so we were able to hang out and stay dry. It also never rained on us while riding.
Izzy’s first camping experience I’ll give a 6 out of 10, she was scared by a lot and when she was scared was really hard to handle. She broke free twice and it took a lot to wrangle her back. Once was after a clap of thunder and I thought she was gone, she took off down the road but eventually came back. Overall we had a great weekend though.
Now the expensive part, truck is still making bad noises and is at the transmission shop now. Probably won’t know anything until tomorrow so fingers crossed 🙁

    • Sounds like an interesting weekend for you.

I expect to struggle mightily this weekend. I’ll have fun, but doubtful that will occur while ascending. 😀

      Fingers crossed for you.

    • Barb says:

Allan just dropped his truck off for its 1st oil change – its only been a year & a half. and a recall – some software think – I think, I don’t pay attention.

Hope your truck doesn’t cost a million dollars – might have to just buy a new one???

      • Bob says:

Couple grand on repairs is way better than the $80-$100 grand for a new truck that I would want. Although I would love a new truck, it’s just not in the cards right now.

  9. Still waiting for two of the three healthcare charges to be reversed. If not done in the next day I am going to contact my credit card company and dispute the charges.

  10. David says:

I was the social ringleader last night, with Debbie and three of my friends joining me for a reggae concert at The Eastern last night. The opening band was The Original Wailers, with one guy from Bob Marley’s band on stage among a bunch of relatively younger guys. The main act was Steel Pulse, which it turns out opened for Bob Marley back in the 70s. Both bands were great. It was a fun experience, especially given $5 VetTix and being across the street from my place.

If I can get $5 tickets to see Bob Dylan at Chastain this Friday, that will be my next concert, otherwise it’ll be the free Drivin’ N Cryin’ show on August 12, who has a reggae banding opening up for them. I be jammin’.

  11. Saw a hawk land on my deck today. Very cool.

Skies are blue, but I am about to login to a zoom meeting. It reminds me of working!

  12. Stacy Fox says:

Nah, dude. I’m sure she wasn’t too young or too pretty to date you: she probably just had the wrong haircut. I remember a time when I had a wee little crush on you but knew if I didn’t have a pixie haircut, I wouldn’t even have had a chance with you. True story. 🙂
