Since moving into the ITP Estate in 1999 my neighbor’s huge sweetgum tree posed problems. At first it was the amount of spiky balls it would drop into my yard, especially when I used to mow the backyard. Then over the years it started dropping large limbs into my backyard. During the last few years I noticed the health of the tree decline and it was getting covered by ivy as well. I started researching if there was a program to help the elderly remove dead trees for discounted rates or cost free, and how I would broach the topic with my neighbors. Yesterday morning I had a sense that there was more light outside. When I went out to walk around Wee Little Farm and check on the status of my paw paw trees, I noticed one paw paw was covered by a large trunk-sized limb. Naturally I assumed one of my other trees was damaged by Saturday’s storm, but no, I quickly realized that the sweetgum had toppled. Fortunately for me it did the unthinkable, it fell toward the back of my neighbor’s property and into the property behind theirs. It’s very possible that the far corner of my chain link fence has been damaged, but that’s a minor nit compared to what damage this tree could have done to my property.
Wee Little Farm may also benefit from the tree’s departure as it might now receive a little more afternoon light, and depending when my neighbors get around to hiring someone to clean up the debris I may get some wood chips out of this.
Wordle: six, my starter was DAILY
Interesting weekend for me.
There was a “vintage electronics” estate sale very close to me in Decatur. Mostly very old WWII vintage military surplus…junk. Think “Enola Gay” vintage stuff.
The man was a Ham (KA4RSZ, SK) and a prolific collector of “boat anchors” (older radio gear), especially RTTY (ancient mechanical paper-tape-driven teletype machines).
Irony: I discovered the man was the great-grandson of the folks from whom we bought our first house in Decatur! The man worked for Southern Company for 39 years (!). Despite being around a mile from me, I never knew him.
There is something poignant about looking through a person’s lifelong collection of (radio) stuff. I got a few small things so that spirit can live on. (At least until Wash, Rinse, Repeat and that happens upon my ultimate demise.)

I find the same thing happen when I go to a Goodwill and you see what is obviously someone’s collection of something (teacups, tchotchkes, shot glasses, etc).
Wordle in 6 and I had the first three letters in 2!
Friday, I spent under the house trying to figure out air leakage into the crawl space. While I patched a few holes, nothing significant. I’m still sore from the crawling, contorting and doing the work. More to come.
Saturday, I joined a small gathering of BMW’s of middle Georgia for a little ride. Nice to meet the local riders and in a small world department, one of the guys was riding a bike he bought from one of my cycling official buddies! Small world indeed.
I took my new boots out for a “hike” yesterday. just 3.5 miles on the roads here, but except for a sketchy Achilles tendon, the boots were fine.

Unfortunately houses are rarely, if ever, constructed so that they are easy to maintain. Critical functions are always inside walls, under the house, or underground.
… and in other news, Debbie sold another puppy! That’s 2 down and 1 to go! The guy drove up from Tampa!
I am back in the office after two weeks of do-nothing vacation. It was glorious to have two weeks to do nothing but read and watch sportsing. It was very hard to get up this morning. Luckily my boss is on vacation this week and it’s summertime so I should be able to catch up with my work pretty easily.
Welcome back. One more big game in Atlanta for the World Cup on Wednesday, and then it’s gone.
Yes, and I will also not be at that game either. But I will watch it on TV!
a friend looked up the prices for Wed – nose bleeds were over $3000
Yikes!
Not a single mention of the tree story? Sometimes I wonder if anyone reads the blog.
I’ve tried to take photos of the downed tree by not of my shots show how large this tree was prior to its falling.
….tree?
🙂

Too soon for tree damage stories for me 🙂
I did complete my porch repairs from the fallen tree branch. Roof inspector said all looks good so it seems I will get out of this event for under $200. Yay!
I was going to ride the moto in the mountains on Saturday however as I travelled north on 400 the skies turned very dark. Pivoted on my plans and headed West and south avoiding the weather. Did a big loop and ended up in Marietta so decided to get the biker bar experience and stopped in to Mulligans. It did not disappoint 🙂 I tried to leave at least twice where it started pouring rain so I had another beer to wait it out. I finally got a sliver of sun and was lucky to make it all the way home without a drop of rain.
Glad your incident turned out well, at least as bast as it could have.
Nice. I think I’ve been to Mulligans once with Barb and Allan as we stopped on a bike ride.
Mulligans – the red neck bike bar world
Wow, neighbors who had the tree fall into their yard have already hired someone to do cleanup. Impressive.
I don’t expect the neighbors whose tree fell will be so expedient since I doubt that they are as financially well off.
Yeah, that is incredibly lucky that the tree fell away from your property. Maybe having lost so many limbs over your yard lightened it on your side, making it fall on the other side. For a homeowner in Atlanta, having a tree fall on its own with no property damage is the best possible outcome. Don’t need to get a permit, just have someone haul it away.
Debbie reported a big limb and some trees down when she fed the ponies last night. I was able to eyeball everything and nothing breached the fenceline. The first oak, right at the tree line was rotten at the base and it took out several more as it fell. As the fence is secure, they might stay like that.
I’m glad WLF survived. More sun can only be a good thing.
After decacdes of having lovely trees looming over the two different houses that I owned, it sure is nice not having a care in the world in that regard.
I actually watched a world cup game on Saturday. Debbie and I went to Six Feet Under to catch part of my daughter’s server shift. She had just switched from serving during the day to hosting for the evening, but she scored us primo seats at the bar. Given the recent Haaland rabbit hole I had gone down, we cheered for Norway, but they just couldn’t pull it off. If Haaland had been able to restrain his Viking instinct, Norway wouldn’t have had a point removed. I doubt I’ll ever watch another game, but it was an entertaining way to spend the evening, and catch up with some SFU staff and regulars that I haven’t seen in a while.
Honestly, that foul that took away Norway’s second goal was total BS. However, in general they just didn’t play as well as England did.
I agree, and it almost felt like they purposefully weren’t giving the ball to Haaland. Norway had several missed attempts on goal.
And I was flabbergasted when Haaland left the game. It’s as if he gave up!
I can see through the the yard into which the tree fell, in addition to my yard, and yes, my chain link fence is toast. I assume back neighbor will replace their privacy fence, so I doubt I will spend the money to replace the chain link sections.
I should probably go out to see if I can start cleaning my yard of debris, but honestly don’t feel like it today.
I’m going to have to find a time this week to get out there. The limitation is that the chainsaw I intend to use is electric.
I do have a gas powered chainsaw, but no gas for it.
I also have to be careful to ensure that any removal I do doesn’t initiate any further movement of the main trunk.
Now it’s raining, so no going outside.
I just finished eating lunch after a Decaturish errand run — haircut, Goodwill, Kroger for tag renewal, Dollar Tree, Aldi.
Have chainsaw, will travel. Would have to be Thursday or Friday.
Thursday is out, I’m volunteering.
I will think about Friday and let you know.
Thanks!
The rain received recently has filled my catchment basins. Whenever it stops raining I will need to empty them into the bigger rain barrels.
