The festival I attended over the weekend could be described as “fair to middling” due to lack of communication, and the unexplained cancellation of a couple of presentations that I wanted to hear. I actually left early Sunday morning, not because I became Cranky Paulie, but rather because I had my car packed ten minutes before heavy rain was due to arrive, and I would have had to kill three hours before any of the festivities started. Oh well. Do I regret giving the festival a go? No. Would I return for the next one? Probably not.
Of course since this was also the first time I’ve returned to Scottsboro in over thirty years it’s the first time I returned to shop at Unclaimed Baggage since then. That store has grown dramatically since the 1990s. I bought a Kindle Paperwhite, an Apple charging block, and an Apple headphone jack converter cable, all for $45.
I’m sure it’s nothing, but I signed into my Amazon account using my WiFi on the newly-purchased Kindle, and the device thinks I am in Illinois.
Wordle: three, my starter was CRUEL
Wordle in 4.
One of the guys I met at the BMW rally was a big fan of the unclaimed baggage store. Said that’s where he buys all his electronics. And he drives up from Charleston to do it!
The hydrant at the shop is giving me problems. I had to use a torch to get the head off and may have caused harm by trying to pull out the plunger in attempting to gain access to the gaskets in the bottom. Fortunately, on one of the last re-plumbing efforts, I installed a cut off so the rest of the area can have water and I can work without shutting off the entire system.
I still haven’t taken the scooter to scuff up his new shoes. That is on the agenda today.
Debbie is having a grand time in Oregon. Pics from the redwood forest are amazing.

And speaking of Unclaimed Baggage-
https://www.theguardian.com/travel/2025/aug/26/the-secrets-of-lost-luggage-auctions-i-bought-four-bags-for-100-what-would-i-find-inside
As y’all well know, I have had a shit-ton of baggage (thanks mom and dad! You’re the best!). Over the summer I had to check a bag for a conference, and while waiting at the carousel, I was like “wait a minute, why did I claim their [emotional] baggage in the first place! It was never mine!” It made my brother and me laugh, at least. And so I will never, ever go to the unclaimed bagged store. Y’all keep that shit to yourself. š
dang David – you just made me LOL.
and – always try to get your free 2500 Delta FF miles when you check a bag, you never know if it is there in 20 minutes.
I’ve only been checking a bag because it’s a retractable sign for the conference. The rookie mistake I made is getting a sign that condenses down to just this side of of the oversized bag specs. My bag made it to the normal carousel once, but twice got relegated to the hellish oversided baggage counter. I’m ordering a smaller sign that won’t get red-flagged like that. Otherwise I never ever check a bag.
FYI, you can get tickets for Molly Tuttle and The Beths for half-off by way of https://zmpsummertimesadness.com. It’s a BOGO sale, which means you do have to buy two tickets per show, but if you do, you should land well under your $40 threshold. I paid $47 for two tickets to see Brian Jonestown Massacre at Variety next week.
Good job nailing down Wordle in 3, took me 4.
Oh, I may do that! I already have purchased a tickets for The Beths, but not Molly Tuttle.
I missed the BOGO part, and since Iām solo itās a no go for me. Thanks anyway.
You never did say what kind of festival it was? With you it could be mushrooms or punk bands.
Sushi as usual last night and then I went to bed early. Sox played at 6:30 which meant they were over around 9:00 and I hit the sack.
With Paulie, it could be mushrooms AND punk bands!
Going to see punk bands while high on mushrooms?
It was called āGet of the Gridā, and I was hoping to learn a lot about solar energy and independence; I did not. The music was good, however.
wordle in 4 – Good job Paulie in 3!
Yesterday was weird problems with freight – so a busy & annoying day.
Tom finally got a meeting with the funeral home, so Dad’s obituary was posted.
Allan was busy doing “stuff” in the backyard – so I went for a walkabout.
Had some fish & angel hair pasta with my home made pesto – it was pretty tasty if I do say so myself!
You had me at home made pesto! Sounds delish…
it really is very easy (if you have a food processor – which I rarely use, I should use it more often)
Takes very little time – just need to have enough basil – which I do have right now. I used walnuts instead of pine nuts – because I had them.
I never use my food processor because it’s in the back of my appliance cupboard and it’s heavy AF. So I only haul it out when absolutely necessary. I used it last fall to make the graham cracker crust of my frozen cheesecake. Priorities!
YES, it is heavy AF, its in the bench seat storage, so lifting it up out of there is a PITA.
but – it works so well for this use, it was worth it.
Day 1 successful, no falls. I think we watched every match of the US Open so far, thankfully I like tennis so at least it is entertaining.
Not sure what we will get in to tonight but I do need to get out of this apartment for some fresh air. Tomorrow we will attempt going out to dinner, that should be interesting.
did you get any work done?
Is it just the 2 of you?
Your brother & sister & any other relatives aren’t around in the evenings?
I’m able to work, there is a little conference room I can go to for any meetings. My brother is on a work trip so gone all week and his wife is working this week. I did onewheel over to my sisters house last night because I was bored. I may go find a local dive bar to kill some time tonight.
And what is the food situation? Does anyone cook?
My sister has cooked some meals and packaged them up and put them in the freezer. I need to figure out what all is there and thaw something out for tonight.
Breakfast is my jam so I enjoy cooking that.
you eventually get used to the boredom – I read crap on the internet, read a book, or play games on my iPad. My Dad couldn’t follow scripted TV, so it was sports only (or Wheel of Fortune) on the TV.
I’ve always wanted to go to that Unclaimed baggage place – but since its 2.5 hrs away, never have.
What other crazy places are there to see along the way to make it worth a day trip?
You could make it a pretty drive over the mountains…
They have soooooo much stuff. Itās almost insane to think that all of this stuff is truly unclaimed baggage.
Back from a long morning of errands, including getting a disappointing haircut. Did laundry, grocery shopping, Goodwill stop, and frustration at Home Depot looking for something that was supposed to be in stock but was nowhere to be found.
I decided to look at our homeowners insurance (now that the house is paid off & we have to pay it) I noticed how crazy the increases have been over the past few years.
So- I called – figured we never told them we got a new roof.
Just going thru a lot of questions – the premium dropped a few hundred dollars, and once I get a form back to them about the metal roof, it should go down some more.
So, that was worth some aggravation.
I receive a letter from my home insurance company saying they are sending someone out to check out my home as part of a āroutineā standard procedure. If they give me any reason to tell them to go fuck themselves, I will do just that.
I know USAA hasn’t changed anything in forever on our coverage -as the questions she asked, I had lots of changes for the answers she had in the system.
But – I’m happy the premium is going down – and maybe even more with the new roof.
I received no mail yesterday, so I still donāt know what nonsense I will have to endure with the eye doctor.
From an email I just received:
My response:
I have approximately eleven months to watch everything on BrotBox that seems interesting to me.
you can’t quit before a year?
My annual subscription renewed at the beginning of this month.
20%!?!?! Screw that.
