I moved from Huntsville, Alabama almost 31 years ago. I returned Thursday*.

Why was I in Huntsville? Well, the long story is that it’s because I was attending a weekend festival in Scottsboro, and I discovered that the band Bully’s show on Wednesday night at The EARL was sold out, but they were playing a free show in Huntsville on Thursday, so why not spend two days in Huntsville and make the short drive to Scottsboro on Saturday? As the Chattahooligans say, “Embrace the Chaos!” Of course a free show isn’t exactly free when you are paying for gas, lodging, beer, and food. And it would have been cheaper, and better, if not for the stupid rocks on I-20. I saw my first solo apartment, the massive changes which have occurred during the past three decades, ate at my two favorite restaurants (amazingly both still in business), drank at breweries which didn’t exist in the early 1990s, and did an eight-mile hike around Monte Sano.

Thanks to ITP-Reader John, I learned about the unfortunate passing of Ken Rosskopf, ironically due to complications from getting hit by a car at the end of his bike ride. It’s ironic because Rosskopf was known as a lawyer who represented cyclists after wrecks, including yours truly back in 2011.

Wordle: five, my starter was ANISE. I’ve become a very mediocre Wordle player.

* to be accurate, I have been back to Huntsville once before since I moved to Atlanta, to work a career fair.

  1. I didn’t notice this when I arrived home, so it may have happened overnight, but all of the leaves on the ten small okra plants in the front yard have been completely eaten. I assume rabbits are the culprit.

But when/where was the time share part of the weekend?

  3. HamWithCam says:

We lived across the street from Ken for 30 years.
    Ken was a good man.

  4. New batch of sugar water is out for the hummingbirds. I’m experimenting with making half as much, since I seem to pour a lot down the drain when I switch feeders.

  5. Oh joy, apparently I’m going to get something in the mail today from the eye doctor. If it’s a bill, they will be receiving a visit from me tomorrow to fight it.

Wordle in 4 and really shouldn’t have taken as long as it took.

“The wheels on the scooter go round and round”- all back together and slightly tested in the driveway. A more involved test later today perhaps.

Games kick off party at a new location- a senior day care center in Sandy Springs. We all had a good laugh at that. As we had only a few sprinkles, the cooking location (uncovered) worked but it could have been a mess. Good turnout.

Very sad to hear about Ken’s passing. I had not heard he had been in an accident.

  7. Intended to get out in WLF this morning to inspect and correct, but, I had the sprinklers set to water everything before sunrise, so I don’t want to go out and get soaked.

    Greeting from sunny Orlando!
Had a super fun weekend prior to my shift watching my dad for a week. Mountain bike in Ocala Friday, Onewheel pub crawl with my brother on Saturday then spent the day in a dark pool hall yesterday. It has been a long time since I shot pool and we played a million games and drank beer for almost 5 hours. Fun times.
Getting some work done this morning before heading over to the apartment. Apparently dad fell yesterday and they had to call a paramedic to get him up off the floor and back in to his chair. This should be an interesting week.

    • Good luck Bob. I remember how hard it was to lift my 100 pound mother when she fell on one of my last visits with her,

While driving around Huntsville I was stunned to recall many spots where I went when I lived there, including Steve’s Cues & Brews. I was stunned because though I lived there for three years I don’t have many memories of what I did while I was there.

    • Barb says:

Bob – calling 911 for that is commonplace – especially I’m sure in Florida.
But- it is helpful for ammunition to get them to move………

      • Bob says:

Thanks for that information, I did not know that is common. I just wonder if the paramedics keep showing up will the apartment complex say he is too big of a risk and evict them. Time will tell.

There will be some serious conversations while I am here.

I am back from MA, it was a great trip. Got some good family time and we successfully took my dad out in public for the first time in 8 months. He’s doing great, super active and he’s got a new software he’s building just for funsies so his brain is super engaged.

Yesterday I got turned away at the security line because of the wrong name. MF! Yesterday’s flight was the first time I was actually able to check in for the flight on the app, so I figured it was finally fixed. Nope. I had to go to the Delta desk and get a paper boarding pass, and then go back to security. I am livid.

Fun aspect: while waiting in line at the Delta desk a heavy metal band was in front of me checking all of their instruments and equipment (which took FOREVER). They were all middle aged and looked like Ozzy Osbourne. Then it turns out they were on my flight, and the flight attendant recognized them as Queensryche. So I was on a flight with Queensryche! LOLOLOL!

  10. While it doesn’t come as a big surprise, it always amazes me to see how quickly the suns path across the sky changes. Parts of WLF which got a lot of sun, will soon receive next to none.

  11. Trying to watch la Vuelta, but the commercial breaks are killing me.

  12. I’m filled with dread today. I think it’s because of the mail from the eye doctor, and the fact that I might have to confront them, again.

Or maybe it’s something that happened today that will be in tomorrow’s blog…

Or maybe it’s something I received in the mail last week, but have not mentioned here…

    Or, all of the above?
