It’s All About The Benjamins, And The Washingtons, And The Lincolns, …

I’ve been trying to curtail extraneous spending. It’s really hard because I am used to buying things that I don’t need, but want nonetheless. If you really know me you know that I rarely spend money on fashionable clothes, jewelry and such, but I do have a weak spot for electronics and music.

I want to return to an old idea of mine that the only thing I want to collect is money.

However Music May Be Stricken From My Buying List
Florida and a few other states are trying to make the resale of used CDs incredibly difficult. According to an article I read yesterday in order to sell CDs the store will be required to fingerprint and get all of the personal information from the seller, and must hold the CDs purchased for thirty days before they can sell them. Additionally, a $10k bond may be required to become a used CD broker.

Me thinks the fucking RIAA has something to do with this.

Listen up assholes…. Make it difficult for people to buy and sell music and people will just steal music. Get off your fucking legislative and litigious high-horses and stop being such dicks. I buy music. I will stop buying music. And I am sure that I am not alone.

Speaking Of Spending…
If you were going to spend money during the next few days at a place that specializes in outdoors things, let’s hypothetically call such a place REI, you should probably try using the coupon code ANNV7 to save 20% on the highest-priced item in your virtual shopping cart. And if you choose to have it shipped to a REI store, you would pay no shipping costs.

I decided to try this last night by purchasing a GorillaPod SLR-Zoom. These are rarely on sale at any retailer so I took this opportunity to create my own sale. It’s supposed to be in a local store in a few weeks.

To The Trained Eye It Means A Lot
Once again I stumbled upon a hash trail while walking.

Apparently last night was the monthly Two-For-Tuesday hash and it ran around the Virginia-Highlands. I must say that I thought the trail was laid strangely. It consisted of with chalk arrows and checks, with no flour to be found. For a second I wasn’t really sure that I had hit a trail.

If your a hasher it’s really second-nature to be looking around when walking, running, or biking. And in this town it’s not unusual to run into trails.

This has nothing to do with anything today.

Valentine

I just like it.

(There was supposed to be a shot of some cool old savings bonds here, but I never got around to taking the shots last night. I know, I’m a slacker. In reality I was too worn out to get around to it.)

Really?
A lot of local blogs have linked to the MTV video piece that highlighted the rising Atlanta local indie music scene. In the piece they highlighted Deerhunter, Snowden, Manchester Orchestra, and The Black Lips, bands whose names should sound familiar if you’ve been reading this blog for a while.

What I found most intriguing is that John Norris is still alive and that he still works at MTV. Huh. I cannot tell you the last time I turned on MTV, but I know that it’s been at least five years, if not ten.

Although I Might Be Spending Extraneously Tonight
I’m contemplating a stop a George’s on my walk tonight. Any of you early-bird hashing types running?

And now for some ideas stolen from LiveJournal…
Current Mood – alone in a crowd
Current Music – Sirius Satellite Radio, Channel 26 playing Robbers On High Street — “The Fatalist”
Website Of The Day – Actor Will Ferrell has jumped onto the video portal scene by introducing Funny Or Die.
Exercise (b)Log – walking, 4 miles
Mode Of Transportation To Work – Marta

May Goals
1) Lose two pounds. (starting weight 200 lbs)
2) Exercise at least five days per week.
3) Read two books, specifically
3a) “722 Miles: The Building of the Subways and How They Transformed New York”
3b) “The Evolution Of Useful Things…”

Cheers,
Paulie [eatl/ga]

As far as I know, the usual suspects will be at Georges’ tonight… at least I will.

That “tripod” is cool. Freaky, but cool.

  2. Gentri says:

Dude, I think I’ve mentioned him before, or at least his hour long podcast but check out Dave Ramsey. He’s got a book for you that I can recommend:

    http://www.amazon.com/Financial-Peace-Revisited-Dave-Ramsey/dp/0670032085/ref=pd_bbs_sr_3/102-6348967-5778525?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1178715089&sr=8-3

He’s got some strong arguements for saving your money and paying down your debt, including your house early. It’s good advice if a little hard core at times. I’ll be happy to loan it to you if interested.

  3. martha says:

I’m hoping on being there at 6 for a run.

Don’t know if you’re interested but I’ve started running Saturday mornings with a group over in Oakhurst. Nice people and it is only 3ish miles. I want to get my time under an hour for the Peachtree!!

  4. Barb says:

Dave Ramsey is on 640AM radio (do you even have one of those anymore?) drive time in the evenings. He has great advice, though a little too religious for my liking. But, he does have some excellent ideas on how to get rid of debt.

Oh yeah, and I think it is impossible to stop most extraneous spending. I’ve been trying for months without much luck, but we have gotten better about eating at home. That has saved a few bucks.

  5. Paulie [eatl/ga] says:

Catching up — I am STILL not getting email notifications for comments. ARGH!

@Steve: Okay, I’ll stop by for a beer or two. I’m be walking to VaHi from Linbergh in order to work up a bit of a thirst.

I am really looking forward to playing with the GorillaPod.

@Gentri: I’ve subscribed to Ramsey’s podcast. While I don’t subscribe to his Christian slant, I do listen religiously (get it? religiously. oh, I kill myself). I’d read his book if I didn’t think it would take me until 2010 to finish it.

@Martha: How are you going to do the Pub Crawl in under an hour? 🙂 My weekend schedule is so sketchy I don’t want to commit to anything new right now. I’ll consider it though.

@Barb: You answered my question about which Atlanta radio station broadcasts Ramsey’s show. Thanks!

I agree about the spending. There will always be unexpected costs, but there are many things I can do differently. It’s all a matter of discipline,

  6. martha says:

Paulie, I’m just that good! I can drink in an hour what it takes others all morning to accomplish.

I really think doing the Pub Crawl is an every other year event for me. However, per my sources it will be ending at The Black Bear Tavern and you can probably find me there after the run. I’ll have earned it.

  7. Betsy says:

Usual Suspect checking in…I should be at George’s for a 6 pm run. I will have just watched a Chelsea/Man U match at Brewhouse, so the run should be interesting.

  8. martha says:

Betsy, great I might just have a chance of keeping up with you then.

  9. Paulie [eatl/ga] says:

Did the “right” team win Betsy?

  10. Steve says:

I want to work where Betsy works!! Nothing like a little soccer and a few pints to take the edge off a 40 hour week.

  11. Paulie [eatl/ga] says:

And you get to work with Betsy… 😉

  12. Terri (SW) says:

The right team avoided relegation last Saturday with a goal by Clint Dempsey!

    Fulham 1
    Liverpool 0

    Up the Fulham!

Bets- What are we going to do when the EPL season is over in two weeks? **sigh**

ManU(re) have already won the championship, so this game isn’t worth anything…I just want to see Chelsea get their arses handed to them by ManU’s reserve squad!

  13. Paulie [eatl/ga] says:

    Too funny Terri.

  14. Barb says:

    soccer talk – I don’t get it……….

  15. Stacy says:

*laugh!* oh, is that what they were talking about, Barb?

    😀

  16. Barb says:

Stacy – it was a wild guess. Was I right?

  17. Terri (SW) says:

    Yesh…talking footy 😀

  18. Music on MTV? What is the world coming too?

  19. Stacy says:

Barb, I have no idea. 😉
