Cooling The Jets

Two amazing newsworthy events occurred yesterday.
1) My air-conditioner works, although the installation is not complete and has not been without difficulty. I swear that if my furnace dies anytime soon then I am doomed to have a terrible life.
2) Brett Favre was traded to my NY Jets. What will this mean? Most likely that they will have a 6-10 season, but now I may be able to see the Jets on national tv.

Read Along With Me
Today’s passage from Notes To Myself.

“I don’t care what people think” — that is the most dishonest sentence in the English language. I say it because I want to believe I don’t care what people think, or I want you to.

What matters is not the caring but the way that I care. Spending all morning in the bathroom is not really caring what people think; it is in fact an unwillingness to let people think. The attention I give to what I wear, the length of my hair, how much I weigh, etc., is designed to control what people will think.

And if I don’t keep the curtains closed, you might catch me off guard and make up your own mind.

To all who have helped me — Thanks.

Moo (And Yes Stacy This Would Be My Cow)
Look who’s all full of himself. 😉

Yesterday I ordered “business” cards from Moo. I figured the time was right since I now have a functioning photoblog (Jalapeno Beach) and a personalized email address using that domain.

I ordered fifty cards each containing one photo from my non-Award Winning Flickr Photostream.

My goal is to use the cards as a calling card when I meet someone I’d like to photograph.

Saving Money On Meals Because I’m Spending It Everywhere Else
While the Moo purchase was on the “expensive side” of business cards it was merely a drop in the bucket of money that I unloaded yesterday. Let’s see, I wrote a check for $2000 of the $3000 that the air conditioner cost me, I charged $550 for the photography workshop that I will be taking in Ft Collins, Colorado at the end of the month, and then there’s the check for $730 that I will be writing today to the IRS because I am giving up on my petition to waive these fees based on my 2007 taxes (mostly because it’s stressing me out so much). See? So spending $30 on business cards, including shipping, doesn’t seem so bad.

I’m all for “living for today” but this seems a bit out of whack even by my standards.

It should come as no surprise that I ate breakfast, lunch, and dinner at home while working at home the past two days.

I Just Felt My Heart Stop
I run my life using Google Calendars. Everything, and mean everything I do these days is plugged one of multiple calendars I manage through Google. I trust Google, not so much with the information stored within those calendars, but rather with the notion that the data in those calendars will not be lost. Perhaps my undying belief that Google won’t lose my data is naive, but if I am not going to run a paper-based calendar then who better to trust than Google.

Let it not be said that I am not a “belt and suspenders” man however. I routinely synchronize my Google Calendars with iCal on my Macs, which in turn should synchronize those with Apple‘s MobileMe service.

The fallacy of my plan is that these are all synchronizations and not back-ups, therefore if data is deleted on one source then that deletion will be propagated to the others — that’s the way it’s supposed to work.

Last night I got frustrated with MobileMe because all of my calendars were blank. MobileMe has suffered from a rocky launch so I assumed that the proper synchronization had not occurred.

This morning I mmopened my Google Calendars to the horror of seeing them blank as well! Luckily, my iBook’s iCalendar still contained my data and I was able to copy it across to Google.

Guess who has a new project underway? I cannot afford to lose my calendar data.

Knocking Off The Trivia Rust
Tonight I will be returning to the Team Trivia realm at Raging Burrito, that is if there is a quorum for the team.

It’s been a long time since we’ve gotten together to play, and with any luck we’ll finish in the cash and have money for future efforts.

And now for some ideas stolen from LiveJournal…
Current Mood – nervous
Current Music – Sirius Satellite Radio, Channel 26 playing Gary Jules — “Mad World” (oddly, not the title song for “Mad Men”)
Website Of The Day – Now that I’ve humored myself by buying business cards, perhaps I’ll take it to the next level and print my own book using Blurb.
Exercise (b)Log – nothing
Monthly Foot Mileage – 0 miles
Monthly Wheel Mileage – 50 miles
Mode Of Transportation To Work – My car
Monthly Marta Rides – 0
Consecutive Days Of Bed-Making (Longest Streak) – 15 (110)
Books To Read To Earn Kindle – 4

August Goals
1) Run/Walk no fewer than 75 miles
2) Ride no fewer than 150 road miles
3) Ride Marta no fewer than ten times (five round-trips)
4) Read at least two books
5) Make my bed every day

Cheers,
Paulie [eatl/ga]

Ahhhh, the sweet feel of cool, clean air caressing your face while you snooze…. how long were you without AC total??? I don’t think that your furnace will blow up anytime soon, it probably just won’t be as efficient…. or the totally realistic scenario that I painted yesterday will occur…….

Eating in is fun! I spent last night cooking up 14 lbs. of pork for the sammiches for Shoot the Hooch this Sat…. only 14 more pounds to go! Can you guess what I had for dinner?

I’ve got the Moo cards myself and they are pretty cool…

  2. I had the old system recharged last year in August (when we had that stint of 100 degree days) and that lasted through last Summer. I’ve never had air-conditioning this year. It didn’t work when I tested it in May, and it’s sadly taken this long for me to get it installed (and let’s remember that it’s not all done yet). I was so thankful for a/c last night because at midnight weather.com said that it was 83 deg F outside.

I definitely enjoy eating in, but I’ve been hankering for a good dinner out and each night gave it thought and chose to stay home instead. Two nights ago I cooked up frozen hamburgers and biscuits, last night I cooked up some frozen stir-fry vegetables and some rice. The lunches have been cheese quesadillas (sp) using the tortilla shells and cheese that I’ve had in the refrigerator. I guess what I am ultimately trying to do is clean out my freezer and refrigerator, except for the beer of course.

  3. Barb says:

Brett Favre on the Jets…….. I’m not sure what to think yet. Allan thinks he should really help the team.

Shameless plug – SLUT hash in East Cobb tonight – everyone come OTP!
(Sal – what is on your agenda?)

  4. Barb, I didn’t pack my hash clothes so if trivia falls through I guess I will be keeping up my boycott of SLUT hashes.

  5. Martha says:

See SLUT would have been a great opprotunity to ‘eat out’ on the cheap.

I’ve been eating in a lot, when I’m home. I’ve been on the road so much this past month (only one more trip to go, at least I’m looking forward to this one) that when I get a chance to eat ‘home cooking’ I’ll take it. However, the problem with that is there is nothing to cook in the house…so it has been veggie burgers, cereal and sandwiches (minus the bread of course).

Beer is the one thing that there seems to be plenty of in the house?

Hey Paulie did you here there is going to be a significant cool down in the weather this weekend?

Ugh, I hate to think of all the money I’ve shelled out in just the last couple of weeks…$650 for bootcamp, $500 for new tires, the trip home cost over $500 just for the hotel and gas, my bday is around the corner so I have to get the car registered and I’m sure I will spend a ton of money in PR. This is all really cutting into my amazon.com habit.

  6. Barb says:

you can always bimbo the hash………. that way you could still say you have boycotted the running of a SLUT hash.

  7. sal says:

Barb: I’ll be cutting the grass tonight, if the storms permit….leaving tomorrow for Table Rock State Park for the week-end.

I guess the first confirmed case of West Nile was reported to be at Frankie Allen Park…..great….our softball game was there Tuesday night. I will be slathering on the bug repellant before cutting the grass tonight….tons of mosquitos out there this year.

I have been very creative with what I can find in the house to eat……just so I don’t have to go grocery shopping!

    Loved today’s passage……..

  8. > Hey Paulie did you here there is going to be a significant cool down in the
    > weather this weekend?

Yes, and I laughed mightily! Next up, I wash my car to bring scads of rain. 🙂

When I log onto Amazon.com the top line says “Hi, what was your name again?” I struggle not to think about all of the things I could have done if Uncle Sam had not stuck his hand up my butt and used me like a hand-puppet over the last twelve months.

Bimbo a SLUT? What has the hash become? 😉

  9. Sal, wouldn’t you know that I was thinking about West Nile yesterday as I attempted to kill each and every mosquito that landed on me yesterday before the air conditioning was working! I think that one of my tasks will be to fog the beejezus out of my back yard as I continue to clear the “back forty.” It’s been a mosquito haven since I’ve moved in.

In other news, if I can wake up at a decent hour Sunday morning (in question because I am going to a concert in Athens on Saturday night) then I am making a trip up to Fort Mountain to do a little scouting. I have to find the places where I can shortcut the MMM12. 😀

  10. Martha says:

mosquitos…yikes!!! I did a little yard work on Monday, everything has been so neglected. I noticed my fire pit was full of water, I guess the holes we drilled in the bottom have filled in, I went to dump it and was swarmed but those nasty, little fu*kers. I ran to the deck, grab the bug spray and caused my own little hole in the ozone.

They are expecting a jump in West Nile cases this year, if you can believe it, because of the mortgage crisis. There are so many abondoned houses, properties and pools not being maintained, they are becoming perfect breeding places for mosquitos.

  11. Because of the mortgage crisis?! Wow, that’s rich!

Now that I think about it, who can afford the gas necessary to burn the hell out of the little f*ckers these days?

  12. Sal says:

Paulie: Watch out for the bears up there! You will be running on the Gahuti Trail. Great view from the top of the mountain. If you’re camping out Friday and Saturday night of the race….we might just put you to work!

  13. Bob says:

Paulie you don’t need hash clothes to run a SLUT, it’s in East Cobb. There is no shiggy left, any hint of open space and *BOOM* – strip mall. 🙂
I’ll be there weather permitting, last time out with Barb there were tornadoes. I may get the veto from Trick.

  14. Steve says:

Surely there should be a celebration of the new air conditioner??

You should have run last night, and maybe you would have scored the Ritchey 700c wheelset out of the trash on St. Charles. Perfectly true, bladed spokes, with good Michellin tires that were holding air after I blew them up last night. Only one missing QR skewer. Sweet.

    -FP

  15. @Sal: I shall be up there Friday and Saturday nights on race weekend. I’ll be willing to help out as long as I get my photography and drinking time in. 😉

@Bob: I have no hash clothes nor any sneakers so no hash for me. Besides, if my trivia night falls through I might try and make it to Fox Bros BBQ for some half-priced food before 7pm tonight.

@Steve: What a score! People in the Highlands obviously have way too much money if they are throwing out perfectly good wheels.

  16. Barb says:

Steve – abandoned wheels, damn, I’m glad Service wasn’t with you………. he’d fight you for them, and then I’d say, we need more wheels in this basement?
Are they better than the ones on yoru bike? Or, are you going to try to sell them? (no, we don’t want to buy)

I can’t believe people really think the weather might be bad tonight – who believes the weatherman these days? I’m sure we will have a way to move people indoors if we need to.

  17. Steve says:

Barb- I think they might be a bit better than what is on my bike… I haven’t figured out if they are 8 or 9 speed yet- no cog. I suppose a Shimano wheelset can work with a Campy drivetrain. Can’t we all just get along??

I tried to theorize why they were on the street… maybe a move situation and they were stuck away somewhere and overlooked. Their loss- my gain!

    -FP

  18. Martha says:

Any celebration needs to wait until I return from next weekend. I promise to have Indiana beer and Puerto Rican rum in hand and ready to share.

Barb, that is exactly the reason NO man should have access to a basement…it gives them an excuse to have/keep more junk around the house.

  19. But women won’t let us control the upstairs, only the basement. That’s why I had to piss off the only one I wanted to be with to the point that she moved out and broke up with me.

  20. Gentri says:

…. and hide from the wymin’s, don’t forget the basements most important use!!!!

  21. Martha says:

Becareful you might just stumble on one of us smart enough to figure out how to use stairs???

  22. Martha says:

Paulie, I’m getting word power is out in the ‘hood. I hope you’re able to use that new AC tonight!

  23. Gentri says:

    …luckily, the new house doesn’t have any………….

  24. > …luckily, the new house doesn’t have any………….

    a) electricity
    b) air conditioning
    c) stairs
    d) all of the above

To which do you refer? 😛

My next girlfriend, if she exists, will be wheelchair-bound so that she will be unable to get to me in the basement.

“Paulie party of one….. You will be seated right next to Satan tonight…”
