Have I mentioned how much I love my air fryer? I do! Of course I rarely use it as an air fryer, instead using its standard “bake” function more than any other. Yesterday I used it to whip up a meal consisting of stuffing, sauerkraut, and sausages; think of it as a casserole and it makes more sense. And this morning I used the air fryer’s “bake” function to bake a batch of refrigerator biscuits.

I met my buddy Hank for drinks yesterday at a bar called Napoleon’s. I chose the venue, to which we’ve been once before last Saint Patrick’s Day, because we’d not been there in nearly a year. Hank and I did a three mile walk prior to sitting down to drink. As an added bonus we got to hear Atlanta legend Michelle Malone and her band do sound check on the small stage in the bar.

For some reason I didn’t realize that today is Friday, so I was a little surprised when the podcasts which are normally delivered on Fridays started to download this morning.

Unless I change my mind, I will be wandering up to The EARL tonight to see Raleigh’s own band and now down to being a trio, Chatham County Line, perform. I’ve seen them perform more than a handful of times, and was delighted when I heard a song of theirs playing in the background during the movie “A Walk in the Woods” a couple of weeks ago.

Have a good weekend everyone!

  1. Did I hear ITP-Reader John, aka HamWithCam, get a shout out on the “Dave in the Shop” YouTube channel this morning? *high five*

Wordle in 5 starting with CRASH. No mistakes in Connections: yellow, green, purple, blue.

Got home this morning around 1 or so. Fun night at Furman hanging with the college kids. :). It’s a really pretty campus. Not sure of my plans for the week-end other than the event with GUTS and Public Lands Saturday evening. Dogsitting duties starting Sunday night.

  3. Jenka says:

I had my once-a-quarter haircut last night. I go to Salon Red which is like 5 blocks from my house, so afterwards I did a drive-by the house and picked up two hitchhikers. Their names were Kevin and Finn and they seemed nice enough. We went to Surin for dinner. I wish I had gotten my shit together to put something in the crockpot, but I didn’t.

What a long week this was!

    • Salon Red, there is a name I’d not heard of in years. Back in the day, when I was trying to impress the ladies, I used to get my hair cut at Salon Red when it was located around the corner from the original Flying Biscuit.

Might I warn you about picking up hitchhikers? 😉

  4. Good thing I checked the date of that show, which is at The EARL tonight instead of tomorrow night. Tomorrow I’d have to meet Bob up in Asheville to see them perform again.

Tonight’s weather will dictate whether or not I walk up to The EARL.

  5. As of today I have earned $1150 of the $3500 needed for my BRAG trip later this year.

    • Barb says:

did you get the email about the trip?
I guess I really need read it & start thinking about things.
I think I want to fly Sat 8/24 thru Sat 9/7.

      • Yes, but I haven’t read it yet. I scanned it and saw that it contained a lot of information I need to consider.

I was going to text you and Sal to see if you both had seen it too.

  6. Jenka says:

Something was wrong with the heat so Kevin had Moncrief come to the house yesterday. Guess who has to replace the HVAC system? Apparently it is 19 years old, so it’s definitely time. But it would have been nice if it hadn’t crapped out RIGHT after we shelled out all that money for the reno. Ugh.

    • Barb says:

that’s no fun – but – just think – you won’t have to dela with it for another 15+ years!

    • Jenka says:

UUUUUGH. We are replacing the water heater with a tankless at the same time. (Long story, but basically the current water heater is 100% inaccessible because it’s dry-walled in on one side and blocked by the HVAC system on the other, which is a completely unsafe situation, so while the HVAC system is removed we’ll have them remove the water heater.) The estimate came back for the HVAC replacement and water heater and it is a LOT. UGH.

Wordle in 4 with little help from starting word SAINT.

We finally enjoyed a nice Valentine’s Day dinner last night at the place in Lagrange. Debbie won the dinner competition, as the shrimp in my dish were overcooked. The fried lobster tail appetizer was delicious.

Work cranks up with a call beginning at 4 this afternoon- hopefully it goes well, as we’re back at it at 8 tomorrow and Sunday.

Leap Year hash was interesting – I remembered why I do not do night time trails – unless the hare really tries with the marks, its a pain to follow the trail. And Jack@ss used pink & blue chalk some of the time – which you really couldn’t see.
We thought we were on the short trail (hare left to get food & didn’t tell Sani where the 1st mark was, so we decided then it was the short trail for sure) but then it was longer than advertised (& not Ouch friendly) so we aren’t sure what we did.
Ouch did not show up, so it didn’t matter.
Crowd was about 30 people, and we had 6 namings. I can’t remember them all, but most were fun names.
We finally left the brewery after 10pm.

    • Steve says:

I saw some pics on FB. I always worry about anything randomly leaking from rail cars. Looks like flour, but ain’t.

      • Barb says:

there was some weird silicone or plastic pellets that looked like snow – besides that – there wasn’t anything too scary looking

    • At this point I don’t ever see myself returning to hashing in Atlanta, I’m still too bitter. Oh well, I guess that my skin is just too thin.

  9. I’m taking my hatred of ads to the next level. Now that I pay Google/YouTube to provide me with an ad-free experience, any time a video starts off with a “Includes Paid Promotion” popup, I leave the video immediately.

  10. David says:

Tomorrow night I’ll be in 29 Palms, outside of Joshua Tree. I definitely made the right call to rethink going to Yosemite on this trip as the Sierra Nevada mountains are getting slammed with 10 feet of snow. I’m sure that’ll close the park down. I am looking forward to communing with the desert again. It is much needed.

Wordle in 4 starting with QUERY, fuck that goddamn Conniptions shit. I cleared two levels and then just didn’t care enough so I burned through the turns just to see what contorted groupings they had concocted. I made the right call, I had no fucking clue on one of them, and not a clear enough view of the other one.

I had a fascinating karmic experience yesterday. I make a standing offer to anyone that watches my Excel training sessions to reach out to me via email with questions, or to schedule a free 15 minute Zoom meeting. I only occasionally get taken up on the emails, and even less frequently the Zooms. I get new ideas for material to teach based upon these encounters, so it’s win-win. I had a Zoom on Wednesday where I worked for 45 minutes on the person’s question. I don’t normally give away that much time for free, but the person I was meeting with was so excited about Excel, and she had a particularly geeky problem that I was helping her with, so I fed off of her energy. Well, it turns out that the solution I gave her for what she was trying to accomplish was also the solution that I needed for myself for what I’ve been considering a 3D chess problem where I needed to relate two disparate sets of data to create a dashboard where students and professors can track progress toward readiness to take an Excel certification exam. This is going to be a massive competitive advantage for me over the textbook companies that are actively trying to eat my lunch. Long story short, I was generous with my time on Wednesday, and was exponentially rewarded the next day. I still cannot believe it, I have been banging my head on this issue for months.

I am fully on board with this “getting out of my own goddamn way” mindset. The old me would have cut the meeting after 15 minutes, and I wouldn’t have gotten where I got yesterday.

    • Hope you have a fun trip.

      • David says:

Thanks, Paulie. It looks like my plan to visit the beach in Santa Monica tomorrow is going to get rained out, as well as my back-up plan to go on Wednesday after my work, but Tuesday look sunny. It’s all subject to change anyway, I’ll just see what’s happening when I’m out there. I’ll get my feet in the Pacific one way or another.

    • Steve says:

Very cool! I love playing in Excel and would be fascinated with that kind of discovery.

    • Barb says:

they are getting some serious snow out there – a delivery that was supposed to be today is pushed to Tuesday next week.
the desert is a much better idea.

      Green – Blue – Yellow – Purple – (with a miss)
Wordle in 4 – got it in a crazy roundabout way

      • David says:

29 Palms is at the bottom end of a wind advisory tomorrow through Sunday morning, so there could be that, but no rain is forecast. I needed a sure thing after the Malibu fiasco.

  11. Barb says:

trying to get a new remote from At&T U-Verse on a chat……. this is a BLAST

    • Barb says:

Gave up on chat – ended up calling.
Got a new remote coming, and supposedly better internet speed for $5 less a month.
TV service is still WAY TOO MUCH $$$, but that’s a fight for another day.

      • David says:

I have controlled my TV from an app on my phone for probably 15 years now. Logitech sadly discontinued their Harmony line, but there are other products that let you control your TV from an app, such as this one. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B085Y47L4X/ I used to never know where the damn remote was, but I *always* know where my phone is. 😉
