Backing Up Is Hard To Do

I have what I believe is a solid plan, now if the technology would only cooperate. Just to piggyback onto yesterday’s whining, here is my data backup solution.

  1. Under daily use I save data to one of three drives
#1 (250GB internal) = my home directory for miscellaneous data
#2 (320GB external FireWire) = music and videos
#3 (320GB external FireWire) = photos and photo related items
  2. Each night I plan to run three ChronoSync jobs in order to backup these drives incrementally to a 500GB network attached storage drive. (For now assume that the cumulative amount of data on the three drives listed above is less than 500GB.)
  3. Each week I plan to copy the 500GB network attached storage to one of two 750GB USB drives which get rotated and taken off site.

Once the system is in place and running I am sure that I will be satisfied. However, it is taking forever for the initial setup and first backup to complete. Each day I go without a proper data backup I worry that a drive will fail. Further, I feel constrained to not add more data to the drives for fear that this will only exasperate to process.

In some ways this virtual data is a great metaphor for the physical items which I have been attempting to get under control for over a year now.

Somebody Is Obviously Not Reading The Blog
Yesterday in the mail I received a magazine offer; this is not unusual. However the fact that this offer was for Rachael Ray’s magazine made the offering strange. Have they not read the blog? Do they not know how much disdain I possess for Ray and her cooking?

The offer went directly into the trash.

Realtors, Inventing New Terminology For The Future
On my drive in to work I saw a For Sale sign which contained a phrase that I had never heard before. That phrase was “Pre Foreclosure.” I’m sorry? Pre Foreclosure? I guess this means that the house can be bought before the people currently owning it finally give up? Is this like getting in on the ground floor of a great investment? Why must the Real Estate industry keep inventing new terminology?

RealitTV Update : Hell’s Kitchen — We Have A Winner!
Last night I returned to Betsy’s abode, this time to watch the Final Finale of Hell’s Kitchen.

While the focus on the show was supposed to be the battle twix Christina and Petrozza it really turned into a show about the incompetence of Matt and the delusional behavior of Jen. Jen really believed that she should have been in the Final Two and she really believed that being picked next to last was a sign of her strength! And what the hell was up with her asking Ramsay to write a letter of recommendation for her, especially during the final competition — what a lack of dedication. She will probably find a job in the restaurant industry, but I know that if I was hiring for a chef’s position she would never receive an offer from me.

When the two menus were highlighted I really wanted to eat Petrozza’s food and did not have the same craving for Christina’s. Petrozza’s menu looked sophisticated to me; Christina’s did not.

However, in the end I was wrong and Christina won. What a twenty-five year-old Executive Chef will do for Ramsay is a mystery to me, but he obviously saw something special in her.

I’d like to say that I will not watch the next iteration of Hell’s Kitchen, but we all know that’s a lie. But until then I say, bring on Ramsay’s Kitchen Nightmares.

And now for some ideas stolen from LiveJournal…
Current Mood – okay, but will be better when I start exercising again and get my data backup plan executed successfully
Current Music – Sirius Satellite Radio, Channel 26 playing Bright Eyes — “Bowl Of Oranges”
Website Of The Day – You want to see what gas pain others are suffering? Check out Gass Buddy’s intriguing Gas Temperature Map. On a side note: Since Georgia no longer can boast about having cheap gas I’d like to have my ad valorem taxes back please.
Exercise (b)Log – nothing
Monthly Foot Mileage – 6 miles
Monthly Wheel Mileage – 0 miles
Mode Of Transportation To Work – My car
Monthly Marta Rides – 0
Consecutive Days Of Bed-Making (Longest Streak) – 98 (98)
Books To Read To Earn Kindle – 4

July Goals
1) Run/Walk no fewer than 75 miles
2) Ride no fewer than 150 road miles
3) Ride Marta no fewer than twenty times (ten round-trips)
4) Read at least two books
5) Make my bed every day

Yup, they probably got a notice to make good or forclosure would start… but would you want to advertise that if you were the owners?! I made an offer on that place in E. Point, but it had been sitting so long the bank sent it to auction… we’ll see how fun THAT is going to be! It had some major drainage issues so I am wondering what last night made the basement look like… may have to wander over and have a look!

The corner on my street was above the ankle last night, luckily, not on my side of the road! A paper landscape refuse bag had covered the main drain, once I removed it, the area actually drained back down… my new neighbors had a nice lagoon in their front yard for awhile however!

I’ve been thinking of pulling the trigger in a home XM receiver… what is your take on that technology? Was the merger approved?

  2. XM is good, but I have more familiarity with Sirius. The merger has been approved but no announcement has been made about when it will be finalized or what will occur when it is. Organizations such as the National Association of Broadcasters are being dicks and trying to muck things up with the merger.

  3. Martha says:

My understanding, at least initally, was that Sirus would be the company to come out on top after the merger.

I had the same conversation Sunday, if you already have the hardware, hook it up, most likely which ever company comes out on top will pretty much give away new radios, if needed, to the folks that have the other one. Sirus gave me a free radio awhile back so I would keep my second account.

The programming is pretty much the same, unless you are big into a specific sport.

I hit Shed last night, it was nice. Just had some wine and cheese at the bar but I liked the place.

  4. Shed is in Glenwood Park? I feel badly that I’ve not supported our local bars/restaurants lately. However, I feel somewhat justified due to my financial constraints and my desire to lose weight. Now if I could only get myself to actually stop spending money and lose weight.

  5. Gentri says:

The only problem with the “free radio logic” is if you bought a home compatible XM/Sirius receiver and your choice “lost”… I doubt they are going to send me a 30 lb. H/K home surround theater XM compatible receiver for free… so I’m guessing it may go down the way of HD-DVD… let’s ask Paulie how that new blueray player they sent him is working!!!!! 😉 … as for smaller units, yeah, they probably will offer some type of compensation, may just have to go to the portable unit with a home dock again for now…

Yeah, you know how crazy I am about specific sports…..

  6. Gentri says:

    FYI the merger:

“Now if I could only get myself to actually stop spending money and lose weight.”

Now THAT is some classic Paulie!

  7. They may follow the cellphone model and upgrade you for “free” with an X-year commitment.

Unfortunately for me Blu Ray and HD-DVD didn’t merge, HD-DVD was simply killed off, leaving me holding the carcass.

Your lack of sports interest really compromises your manhood. Were you really out of town last weekend or marching in a local parade? 😛

  8. Gentri says:

Easy now!!!!! Yes, and my 5 year old proof of my “manhood” was in tow…

    … and B: http://flickr.com/photos/82068747@N00/2652815920/

1st time on one… it was a bitch getting into position……..

  9. Martha says:

    more merger information:

FWIW both are guaranteeing no radio will be obsolete…so spend away.

Yeah, The Shed in Glenwood Park. Mudd and I hit it for a few glasses of wine and girl talk. Supper cute bartender, I doubt that will make you go. I didn’t check out the whole menu, some of the apps seemed a little over the top.

As far was losing weight…I’m almost down to where I was last summer… but I’m way fitter. 2 inches off my waist, 10% less body fat and I swear I saw a bicep muscle the other day 😉 at the same weight, so don’t let the number on the scale mean too much. You look much better than this time last year (heck even a few months ago) so just keep moving forward.

Oh here’s a surprise…I fell down my back steps today and skinned my knee.

  10. > “Now if I could only get myself to actually stop spending money and lose
    > weight.”

    > Now THAT is some classic Paulie!

I am nothing if not consistent!

    > Easy now!!!!! Yes, and my 5 year old proof of my “manhood” was in tow…

Eh, you know that I am just fucking with you.

  11. Cute bartender (or waitress) will not get me to go. If I’ve learned anything about cute bartenders and waitresses it’s that they are being nice to me — because it’s their job!

    > Oh here’s a surprise…I fell down my back steps today and skinned my knee.

    And you are consistent too!

  12. Gentri says:

I’m not taking it seriously Mon! Even if you were, I’d just be laughing at you!

both companies are toeing the “nobody” gets hurt line right now… once they merge and the CEO looks at duplicate satellite/overhead costs associated with running dual systems, I’m sure we may hear a “well, we really, really wanted to, but to remain competitive against X, Y and Z, we are putting company D’s equipment in to mothballs…. I’ll probably get a smaller portable unit, but the larger home unit will have to wait.

consistent is good, that way you don’t shock yourself too often! 😉

Tasty China was tasty last night. We need a review from Steve……
and the waitress as always told us what to order. She cracks me up.

Note to self & others, you have to bring your own wine glasses, or you get to drink your wine out of tea cups.

  14. I was chastised for needing wine glasses. I was “honored” to be allowed one of the two that they had that night; I took extreme care not to break it. Next time I go I will bring a bunch with me and leave them behind.
