Greetings from West Columbia, South Carolina. In addition to being ill yesterday I also jumped into the Jackmobile after work and drove East for approximately three hours. When I arrived it was about 8:30pm and I was dreadfully hungry. (fwiw- now you know why I was not at George’s last night.)
There is no accounting for this sort of interruption in my training schedule. I am concerned for my training at this time. I will have to run farther today and again on what should have been a rest day tomorrow.
Read Along With Me
Today’s passage from Notes To Myself.
What an absurd amount of energy I have been wasting all my life trying to figure out how things “really are,” when all the time they weren’t.
To all who have helped me — Thanks.
I Saw A Lot Of Blue Lights, Fortunately None Were Chasing Me
On four separate occasions I saw people pulled over by police on I-20. The first instance happened directly in front of me as the speeder was tailed by the officer and pulled over directly in front of me. The second happened no more that a quarter-mile in front of me. The other two were already pulled over as I passed. Luckily for me I knew there would be no benefit in my speeding to Columbia, so my speed hovered around whatever speed limit in the area through which I was passing. In fact, shortly before I saw the first incident I was doing seventy-two in a seventy zone when I looked up and saw a sheriff in the lane next to me. I was either very fortunate, or my steady (on cruise control) near-speed-limit driving didn’t incriminate me enough to be worth the officer’s trouble.
You can bet your sweet ass that I will be in no great hurry when it’s time to drive back inside the perimeter.
Like I Need More About Which To Worry
As I looked at the temperature that Atlanta experienced last night it looked like y’all had a hard freeze. While I left a sink’s faucet slow dripping and the heat on in the house I am always concerned when a hard freeze happens. Normally I am in the house so I can take further precautions against freezing pipes. However, as you read at the beginning of this post I was not home last night. I once again hope that I don’t return home to a flooded house, for a different reason this time, but no less worrisome to me.
I really don’t need this right now…..

Because I was unable to shoot anything upon my arrival last night I am going to do something rare — reuse a photo that I’ve shown before.
This is the statue in Decatur known as “Valentine.” It just seemed too appropriate for today.
Remember my “closed for renovation” statement from yesterday? Part of that plan is to (temporarily?) put my search for a female companion on hold. It’s all too stressful and depressing for me at the moment. Happy Valentine’s Day for those who of you who are in a happy relationship.
Some Day I’ll Master The Hotel Coffeemaker
Last night I decided that I wanted a cup of coffee to settle me (yes, it really would). I opened the pouch of coffee and followed the directions on the coffeemaker. When I got up to pour myself a cup I saw that the “coffee” looked a lot more like tea. The package said that it could make four cups, but I swear that the markings on the coffeemaker were for twice the volume as I expected them to be. Dangen!
Who Needs Some Yuengling?
Seeing how I am in a state that sells it and I am driving my car on this trip, I am planning on picking up some beer to bring home. That is I will buy some beer once I figure out where beer is sold in South Carolina (grocery store v. ABC package store). For those I see fairly often I’d be willing to grab a six pack to be paid COD. 😉
And now for some ideas stolen from LiveJournal…
Current Mood – fair, wishing to be “well” again
Current Music – listening to The Splendid Table podcast
Website Of The Day – While Road Food hasn’t identified any restaurants for me to hit in Columbia, I do enjoy the Sterns’ segment on The Splendid Table.
Exercise (b)Log – nothing
Monthly Foot Mileage – 23.7 miles
Monthly Wheel Mileage – 0 miles
Mode Of Transportation To Work – My car (just not to my office)
Monthly Marta Rides – 0
February Goals
1) Run no fewer than 75 miles
2) Ride Marta no fewer than ten times (five round-trips)
3) Read at least one book
Cheers,
Paulie [eatl/ga]
West Columbia!?! You get to some real garden spots, eh? 🙂 Put the Bradys down for a 6 of Yuengling. Since I got in the request before my husband, can I count it as a V-day gift? He’s a much better person than I am and has already covered the V-day gift giving from his end.
Sounds like the perfect gift. Consider your order placed.
I’m going to pass on the Yuengling THIS time. I’m pretty sure Allan still has a decent stash, and his mom brought him back so much New Belgium last fall, the beer fridge is still pretty well stocked. Thanks for asking though. I had a nice meal in Columbia once, but couldn’t tell you the restaurant name. It was in an older section of town, in an old somewhat historic building it seemed. Went to a hockey game there too – that was fun. Minor league hockey had lots of fights that night.
Minor league hockey? Hmmmmm.
I think I am going to start a fight with the company named Eaton who are next to me. They brought like seven people and they keep encroaching on my space. Keep an eye on CNN for breaking news…
You can take ’em Paulie. If it doesn’t turn out so well, I’ll be over that way next month and will bring a cake with a file baked in it…
I’m curious: How painful are these events for you? My only perspective is working trade shows (which is my idea of hell on earth) but then I’m trying to promote a product to attendees. I would think at a job fair they would be mobbing you and trying to attract your attention rather than vice versa, but then again those Eaton guys might be poaching your prospects. Enlighten me, please.
These aren’t too bad normally. Today should be a piece of cake since it’s only four hours long. 🙂
If my company had its shit together I might be mobbed. We have a little trouble conveying our needs currently. I hope to help change that soon.
The Eaton people have taken aggravation to another level — and the show hasn’t even started! Two of them are now on a conference call using the speakerphone of someone’s cellphone.
This has nothing to do with anything, but is too funny to ignore. From the news report of the arrest of Josh Booty…” After being tased, he was fully compliant”
I’ve been to some of Debbie’s trade shows and they can be quite boring- some neat equipment though.
Thanks for the VD gift honey. I’m sure it will be a perfect fit.

Only start worrying about your pipes if it is sub-freezing for more than 24 hours, ergo doesn’t go above freezing during the day, and stays below into day 2. My pipes are in my crawl space, which is vented (closed now however) and I’ve never had issues. Pipes in walls (especially inside walls) shouldn’t be an issue, even pipes ending outside are probably OK… with our current day temps, you can move another worry further up the list!
You may have brought some of your Northern worries south on this one.
😉
Thanks, I was born a worrywart.
I always laugh about the dripping faucet. That shit is an urban legend. I spent more than half my life on the frozen north (Buffalo), where it gets so cold we have to resort to imaginary numbers to measure the temperature. No one ever left their faucet dripping and the pipes never froze. The heat needs to be on and above 55 to prevent freezing. By the way, running water does freeze, it just takes longer than standing water. So the dripping faucet is total b.s. on all accounts.
