Um, yeah. I am, um, yeah, out of shape.
I met with the personal trainer last night for my complementary fitness analysis / hard sell for personal training and the man proceeded to kick my ass in approximately twenty minutes. The pain of not working out in a gym in over eight years has already started to set in.
Today’s Personal Project
Maybe go to LA Fitness and do a little cardio.
Today’s Daily Challenge
Give your hands a one-minute massage.
Given the demands we place on our hands, it’s not surprising that stress and muscle aches and pains accumulate in them. Among the benefits of a hand massage are improved blood circulation, muscle relaxation, and range of motion. And giving yourself a hand massage is a great way to relax and de-stress.
Seems reasonable.
What’s The Point
If you’ve wondered about the end game for my current return to working out, it’s internal happiness. Because of genetic deficiencies (not what you are conjuring perhaps) my body will most likely never be one that I am willing to show off again, however, if I can trim down, firm up, and improve my posture and ability to continue to do the things that I desire as I age, then that’s good enough for me.
It was strange as the trainer asked me of my confidence level for performing the tasks needed to achieve my desired goal. I answered honestly. “On a scale from one to ten? At forty-seven, I’d say ‘six;’ had you asked me at thirty-seven I would have answered ‘seven;’ had you asked me at twenty-seven I would have answered ‘eight’.” We are all getting older (some are closer than others) and with that we must accept the truth that we will most likely never be able to perform physical tasks better than we could ten years (or more) ago. That’s the way Life is supposed to work.
If history is an indicator if near future events then I expect the soreness to increase today through tomorrow. It’s pain, but it’s a good sort of pain… 😉
ITP Flickr Pic
Nothing taken yet. Tomorrow I am joining my Flickr buddies for a photo trip down to Warner Robins however.
I May Be Going To The Punchline Tonight
It’ll be a last-minute decision, but I recently found out that comedian Dave Attell is performing at The Punchline this weekend. The ticket price of $35 is steep, but I enjoy Attell’s humor and I have been saying for years that I’ve wanted to return to seeing comedy performances at The Punchline.
Trying Not To Work This Weekend
I will definitely be out of office tomorrow as I will be heading down to Warner Robins early, and upon returning home may head out to a football party to watch the Packers game.
On Sunday I plan to stay at home, cook up a pork butt/shoulder in the crockpot, and perform various house duties (heh, I typed “duties”) such as boxing up items which will be heading to Goodwill.
I’m A Day Early
At kicking off the 2013 birthday season! Tomorrow is ITP-Reader Steve’s birthday. Hope that you have a very happy birthday, friend. I’ll wave hello toward Moreland as I return from Warner Robins.

Cheers,

I’m glad you made it to LA Fitness and met with the trainer, it’s a great first step. And yes DOMS always seems worse two days later. I have to disagree with you on one point, I’m doing things at 43 that I would have never dreamed of at 23. I have far more confidence in myself and my abilities now than at any point in my adult life (being a kid doesn’t count, you think you can do anything at 6 like be an astronaut veterinarian).
I went for a hard 6 mile run last night. My legs are willing but man my lungs are still on vacation. I don’t think the cold air helped, I spent almost as much time coughing as running. It’s been almost 10 days, I’m ready to not be sick anymore.
I’ve got a bike ride planned for tomorrow but first, a trip to Performance for some cold weather gear.
We also will be heading south on I-75 tomorrow, we’ve decided to to this crazy thing called mountain biking. We haven’t been on the bikes in FOREVER, and we decided a road trip to Dauset Trails is the place to get back into it.
11am is the time – hopefully everyone will be on time & we can get riding not too long after that.
I have a huge delimma for Saturday night, we’ve been invited to a re-gifting party (always a fun evening with all the goofy gifts) or watching the Packers hopefully beat the Vikings. And – after the bike ride, I may have no energy for either.
We decided to see if the Wii worked last night, its been a couple years since we’ve turned it on. We need to play with these stupid expensive toys we buy. I’m going to try to get back into using the Wii Fit, it isn’t a ton of exercise, but better than nothing in this cold weather, and I love the penguin slide game.
Martha, perhaps you are the exception to my “rule.” I was a tub-o-lard in my mid-twenties and could do far more at thirty than twenty-five, but I doubt that I will ever exceed the physical feats that I accomplished in my early thirties (running a marathon, two 50Ks, etc) — especially post bike wreck / hip damage.
Barb, I was supposed to go to a re-gifting party tonight, but unfortunately it was canceled.
DOMS? what does that mean?
@Barb – Delayed onset muscle soreness
Our Wii is covered in dust and Jerry wanted to get an Xbox (or whatever) but I had to put my foot down. Last thing we need is more stuff in the house. Speaking of stuff, I’ve put myself on a ‘money diet’ for the month of January. No extra spending, no new running shoes, no new gagets, etc. I’m hoping the money I get from taking back a few gifts will cover the gear I need to buy today. Both Jerry’s brothers got me cold weather jackets for Christmas, I really don’t need either (and one is a little small).
@Steve, how’s Debbie doing today?
That aviation museum looks like a great place to take Travis, looking forward to seeing some photos of the place.
Tomorrow is race 1 of the Snake Creek Gap time trial series. 17 miles of pure joy through the rock gardens of Dalton 🙂 Can’t wait, should be a fun day!
Paulie, just an fyi that in your measurable goals for 2013 it says completely run on 10k instead of one. Just trying to be helpful.
Thanks for the b-day wishes Paulie!
I don’t rule anything out as I get older- running marathons in my late 40’s proved that to me (and that I was probably nuts).
The best solution for your muscle (never heard of DOMS) soreness is a light workout to warm them back up and get the lactic acid out. My rule was never take the day before a race off (when you’re in serious training mode) because it always took a day for the soreness to appear.
It has been a long time since I’ve been to the museum at WR, but I’ve always wanted to go back. Just never made it.
Bob, good luck on the TT tomorrow. The weather should be pretty good and not too cold.
Debbie is feeling better- we’re about to go meet her parents for lunch in Zebulon.

Oops, looks like Laura beat me to the 10K typo! Heh. Carry on!
Yo Paulie, I know you have sworn off Taco Mac but the hash happy hour is at the perimeter TM. Laura and I and going to try to make it. Why not swing by after your workout at LA Fitness.
I got a message from MC. Did I fail to mention that I went to TM after my workout last night? 😀
We’ll see, there may be a work HH and I may still want to go to the Punchlibe for the 8pm show.
(I’m not really here, so this is a subliminal message…)
Attennnnnd Happy Hour!
ok – if I can stalk Paulie’s work HH – then I might go to Taco Mac…….
