A Man Walks To A Bar

My appearance at George’s tonight is completely dependent on the weather, and I guess to some degree Marta. Unfortunately it appears that I have once again been dragged into a weekly 5pm meeting at work so my participation with the 6pm running group will be limited. Bummer. Tonight I am planning to jump off the train (at a station of course) and walk to George’s to meet up for a beer and dinner before continuing the walk to my car. I will only do this if it’s not raining (who thought we’d be saying that a few weeks ago?) and if Marta can get its shit straight and keep the trains running.

What’s A Matta Wit Me?
I case you don’t follow the comments, here is a preliminary update about yesterday’s doctor’s appointment.

  • I still weigh too much (over 205 pounds)
  • My blood pressure is good
  • Things look good in the area that only doctors may roam
  • I still need glasses
  • Blood and urine analysis will be done this week

The doctor also prescribed an inhaler for me in order to help with my running. This will be an interesting experiment. I have never used an inhaler before.

While no bad news has been delivered, I still do not have peace of mind yet.

What’s A Matta Wit Marta?
I continue to want to like Marta. I really do. However, things that happen with the system, or sometimes on the system, make it a little less than desirable. Last week I purchased a seven-day pass and have been trying to ride more often this week to get my money’s worth.

  • On Monday I saw two young boys (somewhere between 6-10) panhandling on the trains
  • This morning the 5 Points station smelled (like urine to me)
  • Marta was experiencing “difficulties” (again) and the northbound platform at 5 Points was packed this morning. Luckily I somehow got onto a North Springs train that arrived when I did so my travel was not delayed by much.

I’ll keep trying. Hell, if nothing else it will provide me with blog material…

Businesses Go And Businesses Come
Word on the street recently has been that the Gravity Pub will be shutting its door for good at the end of the month. Unfortunately it appears that they have closed ahead of schedule, squashing my last chance for drinking a Lone Star there. For those who are in the know Gravity was the first East Atlanta bar that I frequented. I used to be a regular and I will have many memories of my days/nights/early mornings there. Each Thursday night a group would meet up for darts and beer. When everyone but me seemed to hook up and then move away the dart night fell to pieces. I tried to go to Gravity and drinking alone, but that never worked for me.

My hood has a new restaurant however. Kasan Red opened this week. I’ve not had the opportunity to try it yet, but when I do you can be sure that I will write about it here.

In other East Atlanta news, we have found out that the Urban Gardener will be closing its Grant Park store and will be moving into the East Atlanta Village at the beginning of 2008. Who knows, this might give me the motivation to start caring for my lawn. Naaaaah.

Well poo on Gravity. 🙁 I would have liked to go back there one more time, too. I have a fond memory of playing Ghetto Connect-4 (the generic Wal*Mart version) and Hungry Hungry Hippos with the bartenders.

I haven’t taken MARTA in ages…but plan to again this weekend if I do indeed make it out crawling. Speaking of – oooh, I gotta get by and borrow some Gator stuff from you yet! Cool?

    Cool.

Great Pig Shot! I love that picture. The flag just makes it

Here’s to Gravity.. the darts, the juke box, Trick singing along to Patsy Cline, the hash endings, and mostly– tater tots.

Sad that the Gravity closed before I could tie one last good drunk on in one of those ragged booths **sigh**

It was the Internet jukebox and the closing of the “gaming dungeon” that lead to its demise, I’m afraid.

I think we should purchase the bar and create our own! We’ve been in enough to know what works, right? I’ll take out a loan today, you get the juke stocked and someone run out and buy some used board games!

BTW- that MARTA pass will come in handy this weekend…the Halloween Home Crawl is on a MARTA line (East Point- hell ya!)

I agree with you on the reasons for the demise.

    I can’t own a bar, I’d drink all of the profits. 🙂

No home crawl for me. Unfortunately the hash *always* holds the home crawl on the same weekend as the UF/UGA game. Besides, I’m not one for costumes, and don’t need another t-shirt or a full on day of drinking.

  7. Barb says:

no home crawl for me either – of all things we are going to Lake Lanier sailing on Saturday. I’ve been told if you have your boat in the water (which my friends do), it is great sailing, because there are very few other boats out there.

Ray – any chance your boat is still in the water?

  8. Paulie [eatl/ga] says:

You mean there is still enough water in the lake to sail (or boat)? Wow, I’m slightly stunned by that.

    Have fun.

  9. Stacy says:

Paulie, that’s exactly why I’m going AS a Gator fan for Home Crawl this year. 🙂 I’m not sure whose house we’ll be stumbling into at 3:30pm, but they may have a bit of a time getting me to leave!

Of course, I also might get beat up on MARTA on the way there….

    > Of course, I also might get beat up on MARTA on the way there….

Or a huge ration of shit on the way back if UGA wins the game, which I of course hope that they do not.

  11. Barb says:

Lake Lanier is at least 100 feet deep in places, it is just the edges that make you think there is no water. it has lots of water, but no where near as much as we “need” at this point.
