Making A Big Media Move v2.0
I am about to move my media storage — again. Recently I moved everything from a Windows box to a NAS hard drive. However, I have been unimpressed with the speed at which data moves to and from the NAS drive. So, I have decided to make a double move. I am planning on moving my media to my iMac and use the NAS drive as a backup storage device.
This move will also all but make my Windows machine redundant. I have a hard time parting with my hardware so I am not sure what fate this machine will have. I will most likely shut it down for a while to make sure that I really don’t need it before deciding its fate.

The Next Iron Chef Men’s Club
Well that didn’t take very long. Two weeks into The Next Iron Chef and both women contestants have been eliminated. This of course means that my personal favorite, Jill Davie, was eliminated this week.
In this week’s episode the chefs got had to play Mad Scientist. During their elimination challenge they had to use high-tech devices, extreme cooking techniques, and chemicals in order to create innovative dishes. I can’t recall these techniques being used often on Iron Chef, but I could be misremembering.
CD Pick Of The Week
I am a big fan of R.E.M.’s but I cannot endorse the purchase of a live disc from them. I’ve seen them in concert a few times, and while the experience is great, their studio sound is much more satisfying to my ears.
If the Jimmy Eat World was a Jimmy’s Chicken Shack (turn the wayback machine to 1996 — more on this later this week) release I would highly endorse it.
Because I don’t have much information about all but one of the remaining bands that leaves Neil Young. Say what you will about Neil Young but he has been able to put out relevant music his entire career.

You may wish to install Windows Home Server on your wintel box. Or FreeNAS (www.freenas.org). I don’t know what you’re using for a NAS, but both of those options may offer a bit more performance. I have an Infrant ReadyNAS that was slow with the initial data load, but day to day use is fine.
I’m using a dedicated NAS, it’s a Hammer Storage MyShare. The Windows box that I am using is connects to is using ethernet cabling.
The data access seems to lag when I try to get to my iTunes library or sync my iPod.
First I’ve heard of the Hammer. Are you using SMB file shares or NFS? From what I’ve read about file shares on OSX, the order of performance is…. (fastest to slowest) 1) AFP 2) SMB (windows) 3) NFS. Not sure why that would be or how large the differences are in the real world, but that’s my understanding of things. I use Apple’s file shares on the Infrant, but that might not be an option for you.
Also, are you on a gigabit network and switch? If so, enable jumbo frames on your router if it’s supported.
I am using NFS.
My current network is not gigabit because I think that my computers can only handle 100mbps. They are mostly laptops and an iMac so I cannot update the network cards in them.
