Midweek Quickie

You’d think that all of the time I had at my disposal yesterday would have resulted in a quality blog today. You’d think wrong. I’m behind schedule again, so it’s going to be a short one (insert derogatory joke here).

Yesterday’s Daily Challenge
Walk while you make a phone call, have a personal conversation, or hold a meeting.

Standing up gives your back a much-needed rest from sitting, walking strengthens your leg and core muscles, and movement of any sort burns energy. But there’s an added benefit to talking while on the go: Studies show that physical activity flushes stress hormones out of the brain, which allows for higher cognitive functions like creativity and problem-solving. So, your brain gets a boost while you burn energy.

Come hell, high water, or back issues, my walking routine will start again this week. This statement has no relation to yesterday’s Daily
Challenge, I’m just thinking aloud.

Back Still In Black, aka “One Lump Or Two?”
The stitches are out. The doctor pushed out a bunch of blood from Thing 2 (and it’s reacting by swelling a bit again this morning) and deemed that I was healing very well. Even more strange, the doctor pulled the stitches while I stood. All was going well, but about three-fourths of the way through (by my estimate) I started to get weak-kneed and needed to sit down. It’s not like I saw blood, though while I admit I don’t like seeing blood I’m perfectly fine with seeing my own.

I had an incident last night with Thing 1 and wound up pushing out some coagulating blood forcing me to jump in the shower to make sure that I was cleaned off well.

So, nearly two weeks since surgery and I’ll score my experience a ‘C’ — there is a potential for success, but early indications are that I am unsure that this was worth it.

Damn, That Pizza Was Big
After the doctor visit I ate lunch at ITP-Reader Barb’s suggestion of Baby Tommy’s New York Style Pizza. The joint was in my old work neighborhood, which made it fun to reminisce, and my heart was warmed when I saw the logos for New York’s sports teams (including the one who got massacred by the Braves last night — good thing I didn’t go to the game). I had two ginormous slices, which made for enough food to keep me filled up for the rest of the night. I’ll return.

Too Much Time On My Hands
I was done with lunch with about five hours to kill prior to the start of last night’s iOS Developers Meetup. I knew that if I headed back to East Atlanta I’d never return to the West Side, so I decided to try and find something to do to kill five hours. Shopping was out of the question since I don’t need anything. The High Museum was an option, but I wasn’t carrying my membership card and I thought that I should be working. I had far too much time to kill by sitting around in a coffee shop or bar, so those were nixed as well.

I set out looking for a public library. You remember public libraries, don’t you? I tried to remember where I’d last seen a public library, excluding East Atlanta’s, but couldn’t envision any. I turned to the power of Google Maps and was astonished to see no red pins dropped on the West Side when I searched for “library.” I thought for sure that there must be a library in Virginia-Highland or Morningside, so I started driving that way. When I realized that the only library nearby was the one on Ponce which, given its proximity to where all of the homeless hang out, I deemed “out of play.” I gave up my quest. Pity. And yes, I understand why there aren’t more libraries in this world and the likelihood is that over time they’ll disappear completely, but I really could have used a conveniently-located one yesterday.

As I wound my way toward home I decided to treat myself to a King of Pops popsicle ice pop; I chose Orange Cream. It was the first time that I was underwhelmed with a King of Pops ice pop — the Orange Cream was neither “orangy” enough, nor “creamy” enough for my taste.

At home I napped (love it!) and made multiple attempts (and failed) at doing work. I’m in for a very long day today at the office…

Glad you liked the pizza, I get 1 slice & soda for about $5 for lunch and that is plenty. Allan attempts 2, but sometimes doesn’t finish.

We went to trivia last night at the North River Tavern in Sandy Springs to meet up with a long lost friend (his hash name was Keyboard Queen back in the mid-90s, you may remember him), and shockingly, WE WON FIRST PLACE. Jeff lives in Vegas, but he & his family want to get out of there and back to the SE. They were vacationing & looking around trying to figure out if they can actually do it.

My friend Gloria’s regular trivia friends begged us to come back next week to spend the $60 (& play again of course), but Jeff will be back home in Vegas, Allan will be working, so maybe in 2 weeks Allan & I migth go back. Allan & Jeff both have some great trivia knowledge, but even I knew some fo the answers last night, so I’m not sure what the trivia question writer was thinking. Paulie – you met this group, they’d like you to come back too, they asked about you.

Nothing much to report here.. a quiet evening. I attempted to clean the black crap off the horse trailer. This is apparently a problem with RV’s and trailers that have rubber gaskets.. they dissolve (I guess) and leave a black residue in the paint. Wally world even sells a product specifically designed to clean it. No help. The only thing I have been able to clean it with is an enzyme cleaner designed for pools. At $20 a 16oz bottle, it will be cheaper to have the trailer painted. I did give it a good try with the pressure washer and some Oxy-clean, but it didn’t make a dent.

A good steady rain through the night- looks like more this weekend for the races in Anniston. Oh joy.

    -FP

  3. Barb says:

no rain this weekend allowed – I’m are going to the BRAG Spring tune-up, I do NOT want to camp in the rain.

  4. I’ve said it before, but I’d like to start doing trivia again (more) regularly — perhaps not every week but far more often than I do these days. I think the remnants of “Meet the Hashers”, who now go by different team names, meet up a Señor Frogs in Midtown on Wednesday nights.

Good luck with the cleaning Steve. It boggles my mind how things like that occur, and even more so at the number of “solutions” people have derived to fix it.

Oh, and I failed to mention that my new printer arrived yesterday. Now I need to make the time to set it up…

  5. Crap, I just remembered one more thing I meant to put into yesterday’s blog.

    Quitting: Adobe Flash

With the recent talk of the first Mac virus/malware/trojan/whatever in some time I’ve decided to extract the Adobe Flash player (an oft-times target) from my Macs. While it seems as if I’m cutting my nose off to save my face and won’t be able to view any Flash media on my Mac, I am able to do many Flash-related things (watch Hulu, YouTube, do crosswords, etc) using Google’s Chrome browser, so I really don’t need the Flash install after all.

So just like uncle Paulie, Travis had a cyst removed yesterday. His was much smaller and on his knee. I would have preferred it on his back so he could not reach it, now we have to keep him from banging or scraping his knee for a few days (almost impossible for a 3 year old).
He is doing well and back at day care, you would not even know he just went through surgery

  7. Glad to hear all is well. I’m sure Travis is handling this all better than I am. πŸ™‚

  8. Steve says:

We’re all sure Travis is handling this better!! πŸ™‚

  9. Paulie [eatl/ga] says:

Maybe we should all go read Travis’ blog then…. oh wait, he doesn’t know how to type yet! πŸ˜›

  10. Martha says:

To be fair, Travis did have Elmo to help him out, Paulie got stuck with me.

  11. Martha says:

Of course the day I work from home is the day the police show up at the office to arrest one of my employees…

Also when you returned my stuff I found a book “Solo Hiking” , it isn’t mine, do you want me to bring it back? With any luck it will take me less than a year. πŸ™‚

  12. Paulie [eatl/ga] says:

No, that book is for you. You said you wanted to read it when I talked about last year.

  13. Martha says:

Thanks, I guess my mind isn’t quite what it use to be…

  14. Steve says:

Arrested one of your employees!!! So there’s a job opening? πŸ™‚

  15. Barb says:

yeah -Martha – tell us more!!!

  16. Martha says:

I’ve known for awhile that one of my employees has been having some domestic issues.

He’s in the middle of a divorce, 2 kids and a third on the way, and he has accused his wife of domestic abuse, social services has been involved. He missed a few days of work last year, said he was in a car accident, but really his wife assaulted him and send him to the hospital.

So today the police show up in my building today looking for him on three outstanding warrants. So as not to get Federal security involved we asked him to come over to our offices and the police arrested him then.

If what he has been telling me over the past few months has been true this sounds like a case of the (soon to be) ex looking for revenge. Hopefully, he will be able to bond out soon and be back to work tomorrow.

  17. Steve says:

Sounds like somebody has a bad case of crazy. Hope it all works out for him.
