Clean Start… Again

Yep, three weeks into 2012 and I’m declaring perhaps my third “do over.”

Today’s Daily Challenge
Find a healthy alternative to a food you crave.
I wish I had received this prior to consuming breakfast. ๐Ÿ˜‰ I’ll work on this one at lunch and dinner.

Flushed, Perhaps Not Fixed, But Flushed
On Saturday I met up with ITP-Reader John (aka HamWithCam) at The Majestic for breakfast (can you say “pancakes?”). The original plan was to eat, do some photography, and then head to the ITP Estate to flush my hot water heater. However, the weather was far from agreeable for that so we called an option.

After breakfast the two of us headed to my house and flushed the hot water heater. I learned a lot along the way and gained a large measure of confidence doing so. The water heater still seems to knock, though perhaps anecdotally not as hard or for as long, as it did prior to our flushing it (2012 might see a new hot water heater purchase in my future). Even if I can eke out six more months from my hot water heater this maintenance was good to see the gunk which has accumulated within it over the past twelve-plus years.

Once the hot water heater was done we were invigorated to go out and shoot, indoors. With it then being after 10:00am we headed up to the High Museum and shot while we wandered the halls.

By the time we were through with the High we both wanted lunch, and John mentioned a barbecue restaurant I’ve seen a few times while going to the iOS Developers meetups. The place we went is on Chattahoochee Industrial and is called Pappy Red’s BBQ. You might recognize it as the place with the neon pigs and half of a plane crashing through its roof. Had it not been so crummy out I would have taken a photo. I ate a pulled-pork sandwich on jalapeรƒยฑo bread with bbq beans and a fried apple pie. Skip the brans, but the rest were worthy of a return trip.

Given that we were on the west side of town we made a stop in Hop City, where I ran into ITP-Reader Tony who happened to be shopping prior to his laying of the Pine Lake Hash. With three bomber bottles in hand we then made our way over to Gear Revival where I bought a pair of shoes(!?!). I would link you to Simple Shoes, the manufacturers of the shoes I purchased, except that when I looked them up online on Saturday I read that they are ceasing operations. Bummer.

When I finally arrived home I noticed that the large amount of rain which had fallen had clogged the storm drain’s grate at the end of my driveway by washing up leaves and mud. So, I decided to get a little exercise by getting my large shovel and shoveling away all of the leaves and mud which clogged the grating as well as lined the curb along my property line. When I was done it looked pretty darn good I must say. ๐Ÿ™‚

ITP Flickr Pic
I got the bright idea to try and photograph cars racing through this large puddle as we sat inside The Majestic. This was the best of my efforts.
Splashing The Day Away

I Want A Mega Den!
Some of my former East Atlanta neighbors are apparently going to be on DIY Network’s “Mega Dens”. Man, I wish I could be on that show. Oh, who am I kidding, I only want to be on that show to meet its hostess Anitra Mecadon.

Gray Days Here, Gray Beard Gone
With the exception of the short excursions on Saturday the weather kept me indoors most of the weekend. I kept busy on Sunday (not coding unfortunately) by listening to a lot of loud music/podcasts while cooking, organizing, and cleaning.

For the past two weekends I’ve contemplated shaving again. My ever-graying beard and mustache have been getting ragged (though I’d received compliments over the past two weekends). I decided yesterday that looking like a sage, old man was not the way I wanted to appear at Clemson on Tuesday, so it was time to for it to go. Besides, when it comes to my facial growth it’s not “if” but “when” I shave again, and with it being so warm this winter “when” arrived sooner than in past years.

I Have To Walk Before I Run
I have been scared straight with my weight. Prior to stepping on the scale this morning I made a guess of “210 pounds” only to be further disappointed to see a reading of 210.4 pounds. Hey everybody! I have a great opportunity to lose twenty pounds this year!!!

Unfortunately for me the workout room at the office is closed this week for renovations. Therefore I can’t exercise before work (and shower, thus saving my hot water heater). So I will be (re?)starting my exercise routine tonight. I’ve packed some clothes which will allow me to walk, and resist the urge to try running, while listening to an audiobook (I’ve goals to reach, people!). My goal tonight is a 45-60 minute walk. Look for me to walk daily, at least during the days which are not raining, with the goal to step my pace up back to the slow run that I had pre-accident.

no mention of those crazy football games yesterday?

BBQ, reminds me we still need to get to Heirloom one of these days.

We didn’t do much all weekend, we have some friends basically selling everything & moving to St. Croix, so we went over to see what we “needed” of their stuff. Bought a “kitchen sink” table for camping, I don’t think they have ever used it & we’ve said we do need that to finish off all our camping eqpt. We also bought a stand alone freezer, so some day, some day we really will buy a side of beef. And – their refrigerator that is basically brand new & they don’t want to leave it in the house some day when the house doesn’t sell & end up walking away from it. (their bank did say they won’t stand in the way of a short sale, but who knows if that is true from all the horror stories I’ve heard about short sales)

oh yeah – & Allan & I decided to go bowling since we never actually bowled at Cheddarhead, I think sober bowling is good for me, I had a 158 & a 129. But – just 2 people bowling goes way too fast, so next time we go we need other people there. Did anyone ever hear what hte high female score was at Cheddarhead? Could I have won the coveted cheese coozie?

  3. I only watched yesterday’s games with a passing glance. Not being a fan of any of the teams remaining I didn’t care about the outcomes — though I can’t believe how close each was and I feel badly for the Ravens’ place kicker. Besides, I was spending much of my day cleaning out folders and my photography cabinet. I’m still trying to get myself to really clean house.

I never found out who won the female championship this year. I actually enjoy bowling, though I don’t do it very well these days.

Also missing is any commentary on the passing of Joe Paterno yesterday.

  4. Stacy Fox says:

I can always “cheat” and bring you a cheese koozie back on my next trip, Barb. I’ve been known to do that kind of thing. ๐Ÿ™‚

I like the photo, Paulie! It strikes me as a bit whimsical and I like that.

Also diggin’ on the pancakes. Shoulda proved THAT with a picture too. ๐Ÿ˜‰

  5. The thought of a pancake photo did cross my mind (I obviously had my camera at the ready) but I just didn’t do it. Perhaps I’m more comfortable taking shots of my food when I’m eating alone.

  6. Barb says:

Stacy – I’d never turn down a cheese koozie…….. I could always trade it for the cheese championship wresting belt thing I got at the hash?

  7. All this talk of the Packers. You should probably back this Atlanta-based Kickstarter project.

  8. Stacy Fox says:

Wow! Cool, Paulie! Do you know this guy?

  9. No, I stumbled across his project last night while looking for Atlanta-based projects on Kickstarter.

  10. Barb says:

more streaming media blocked – so I have no idea what that link is……..

  11. Paulie [eatl/ga] says:

It’s a Wisconsin-born guy, whose family relocated him to Atlanta, trying to sell Packer-related t-shirts/hoodies (which will probably land him in trouble with the NFL)

  12. Steve says:

We had excitement on the farm on Saturday with the tornado warning!! We were watching the weather channel anyway (don’t ask) and saw the radar and the little doppler echo of the storm. Debbie thought it was tracking north, but I saw it as a lot closer- for those who have been to JEFDSDR, you have a stop sign as the last landmark before getting to the house- well that was ground zero- maybe a hundred trees and some damage to a barn but fortunately, no houses that I’m aware of. Nothing but rain at the day spa.

All the rain and gloomy weather, I worked in the man cave to replace the old flourescents with new one so I actually have light to work with. Also hung my TV and stereo so I can see it better when I ride to Sufferfest.

Barb, should have let us know- I might have convinced the mizzus to bowl.. got to keep my game sharp for next Cheddarhead!!

  13. Barb says:

Steve – it was a spur of the moment decision – but we shoud plan a bowling outing some weekend. Especially now that I own such purty shoes. The bowling alley on Cobb Pwky we went to has 2 hours all you can bowl for $10 (if you keep moving, that would be a decent deal), or the place on Delk we went was I think $3.99 a line.

And – I saw Gordon Rd on the news mentioned – so glad it wasn’t your land that was hit.

  14. Sarah says:

Give up on the water heater before it gives up on you. If the walls give a bit when you push on it, then it’s rusting out and is on borrowed time. It’ll be cheaper to replace it now than when it bursts and leaves 40 gallons of water in your basement.
