I Went To A Piebald Show And A MC Chris Show Broke Out
Would someone tell me who the hell “MC Chris” is? Would somebody please tell me when the billing order has changed? Thankfully after taking a walk about last night I was back inside of Vinyl in time to find out that Piebald and MC Chris had swapped performing orders. Otherwise I would have been rather pissed off to miss them again. As it turned out my lack of knowledge cost me a decent vantage point from which to shoot, but I may have gotten a few decent photos regardless.
Piebald, a band I always assume that I am the only one who has ever heard of them, drew a decent crowd to the small club. The group of testosterone-driven guys up close seemed to have the best time, with their fist-punching-in-the-air, jumping about and onto the stage, and one guy’s two attempts at crowd surfing (please, crowd surfing was popular before you were born, Son). At least their enthusiasm was not for naught as it seem to encourage Piebald to rock that much harder. I am not record company A&R guy but I cannot figure out why Piebald is not bigger…
There were also a few other upsides regarding last night’s show… The show was “all ages” which meant that no smoking was allowed inside (YAY!). Having Piebald go on second and not having any interest in MC Chris meant that I could leave the venue earlier (Yay, for an old man who must get up to go to work in the morning). The opening-opening band, House Of Blues from Greensboro NC, were petty good — not really my thing though which is why I left to go for a short walk. And finally I arrived too late to get a spot in my $5 lot, so after telling the guy whose lot was $13 (yeah, no way in Hell buddy) I drove around and found free street parking (which meant it was like getting the $4 16oz PBR for free).
Technical photography stuff follows, skip ahead if you have no interest
I thought that the place would be relatively empty, especially since I have never heard of MC Chris nevermind finding out that he’s “big” enough to be the headliner.
I dragged my Nikon D50 and one of my fastest lenses, a Tamron f/2.8 90mm Macro, into the show in hopes of capturing some of the activity. I had a pretty decent vantage point which included a ledge on which I could steady my elbows. However even being very close to the stage (almost too close for the 90mm) with all of its lighting and having my ISO set to 1600 (the highest my Fisher-Price “My First DSLR” can get) things seemed dark. I had forgotten to pack my SpeedLight SB800 and have never been too pleased with the on-camera flash so I made the decision to shoot all night sans flash. I’ve not had time to attempt any post-processing but my gut feeling is that things will be either blurry or amazingly underexposed.
Was It Over When The Germans Bombed Pearl Harbor?
Sure the Thrashers are now down three games to zero in a best of seven series to the Rangers. But who is ready to count them out? Me, that’s who. The Thrashers made a decent run this year but obviously are not good enough to go any further. The scary thing is that they are currently the oldest team (in terms of average age) in the NHL.

Here’s a shot that’s definitely not underexposed because it was taken inside my home-built shadow box.
If you don’t recognize it, it is the remnants of a Sweetgum ball. These things have consumed half of my back yard and I am starting to wonder how much fun it would be to see if they burn.
Round Two
Tonight I will be hitting the Clap Your Hands Say Yeah show at Variety Playhouse. I know that CYHSY are so “last year” and that their current release “Some Loud Thunder” doesn’t hold a candle to their debut, but I still like them. I’m contemplating taking my camera, but after last night’s effort I am not sure that I will.
And now for some ideas stolen from LiveJournal…
Current Mood – tired
Current Music – Sirius Satellite Radio, Channel 26 playing Apples In Stereo — “Can You Feel It?”

Seriously, where do you find these websites? I notice that Cheddarvision actually has a MySpace page as well. Who knew cheese was that talented?
Do you suppose the talent runs to all cheese, or just the cheddar variety? And if so, I wonder what the talent hierarchy is when it comes to cheese varieties. Does cheddar have a better personality that, say, the bully gouda? Is any other as snooty as the brie?
oh! and $4 for a PBR is waaaaay too much. What were all the other beers, $7?
I just manage to find this stuff through daily reading, sometimes by Google’ing a phrase.
I agree that the $4 was too much, but I had placed the order before finding out the price.
On another note, I am having problems getting to this site from one of my computers. So if I don’t get back to comment quickly please cut me some slack today. Thanks.
You know, I blame you for the stupid Poison song going through my head all morning now.
Mission Accomplished! 🙂
I love Poison! We saw a great band in Phoenix (actaully Scottsdale) called Metalhead – all big hair 80s, all night long. They had the best wigs. Bar was called Martini Ranch, lots & lots of interesting people. (and Paulie, some very good looking girls)
only the over 30 crowd will understand this:
I still have my vinyl copy of ‘Look What the Cat Dragged In’.
@Barb – I’ve given up. I actually thought that this would make my being around pretty women, but if my trip to Target on Sunday is any indication it has not.
@Martha – On vinyl? Very nice…
I think missed something, what happened at Target on Sunday?
Target is a treasure trove of women who possess “it” as defined by what my sense of “it” is. However, I am either too old for these women, don’t have the interactive skills necessary to talk to them, and apparently do not possess the “it” that they seek.
Therefore I usually exit Target sadder then when I entered. Oddly this has nothing to do with the $50+ I tend to drop every time I am in there.
Don’t know if it’s my place to say anything, but since you asked.
mc chris is a nerdcore rapper based in NYC. He used to work for Adult Swim as a voice actor. It’s stated in his blog (blog.myspace.com/mcchris April 16) that Piebald asked him to headline around the middle of their tour together. I was confused when they went out of order as well.
All ages means 18 year old girls! That’s why I love Vinyl – they’re the only venue in town that regularly lets in 18 and up. Who cares about smoking or non smoking?
ISO 1600 and a 2.8 are plenty fast enough. On the fancier bodies, 3200 and 6400 are useless, thanks to the laws of physics – the amount of noise makes the images pretty much worthless. You might also like the 50mm f/1.4 – but scour the local shops for a used old school one made in Japan, as the newer ones are cheap Chinese junk. Don’t get discouraged, shooting bands in their natural habitat is a bitch. Only birds are a bigger pain in the ass.
@Issa: Ahh, so that’s who MC Chris is. Now that I know that he used to work for Adult Swim it makes more sense that Atlantans would know who is as well. Thanks.
@Smoove D: I’m nearly 42. The only thing 18 year old girls do to me is call me “Sir.”
I’ll keep working the photo scene. I have a 50mm f/1.8 that I will be trying next time around.
