Friday? That Means A Weekend Is Near

Unfortunately I have a feeling I’ll be spending some of this great-weather weekend at work. Would be too much to ask to have a repeat of this type of weather the following weekend when I’ll be in Black Mountain, NC hanging with ITP-Readers Lisa and Randy and kids?

Yesterday was another somewhat boring day in the life of yours truly. Work, lunch, work, laundry, dinner, home, sleep. The only real interesting thing about yesterday was the food I ate…

If At First You Don’t Succeed
Some months ago I heard that one of Buford Highway’s Banh Mi shops had decided to battle The Crawfish Shack by changing its menu to seafood. While riding along Buford Highway this week I finally found the location of this restaurant. Yesterday a coworker and I decided to give it a shot for lunch. When we arrived we found a darkened space with a “For Lease” sign in the window. Dangen! I guess they lost the battle.

In that same shopping center sits Bo Bo Gardens, a Chinese food restaurant at which I eat often, and Chef Liu’s, a Chinese restaurant at which I’ve only eaten once. Naturally, since we were feeling adventurous we went to Chef Liu’s. At Chef Liu’s we ordered and shared two noodle dishes — one cold, one hot — and an order of steamed buns filled with meat and soup. The food was fantastic.

Something Old, Something New
Last night was lavanderia night. I went to my now-common laundromat next to Las Tortas Locas, but instead of eat tacos at Las Tortas Locas I decided to try a new food place. I wandered around the shopping center adjacent to the laundromat, which happens to contain Hoa Binh Market — the grocery store owned by my lunch-mate’s family, and found Viet Tofu. My first thought was to see if Viet Tofu sold Banh Mi sandwiches (it does) but my attention was immediately grabbed by the trays of hot food I could try. I bought two skewers of pork meatballs and six pieces of fried tofu, all for a measly $4.25. I shall return to try some of the other items I saw for sale inside Viet Tofu.

Something Newish, Something No More
The other notable closure I saw on my journeys was that of Mercado del Pueblo, a grocery store which occupied an old Publix on Buford Highway for years before moving up the road last year. I was very confused by this closure because in its former location the grocery store was amazing. After throwing my clothing into the washing machines I wandered over to the closed Mercado del Pueblo and saw that there was a Dekalb Sherriff’s eviction notice on the door. Weird.

I’m Hoping For A Good Show Tonight
I have a ticket to tonight’s Bob Mould show at Eddie’s Attic. I’m hoping that I will get out of the office early enough not have to fight too much traffic while making my way from near Perimeter Mall to Decatur. I’m also hoping that Eddie’s hasn’t continued to cater to the “reserved table” crowd since I am once again but a single ticket holder.

Say good-bye to the face no one will seem to miss… 😉

more interesting meals than me yesterday- I had a salad at Doc Greens for lunch, and then Shepherds Pie for dinner.

I wanted to try to fit the Highland Games in this weekend, but probably too busy.

We are going to the Dome to see the Falcons game Sunday, hopefully since we are playing the Carolina Panthers we will have a better chance of winning than we did last week.

  2. I love Shepherds Pie (and whatever the one is called that uses beef instead of lamb). It’s a wonderful cold-weather meal, and since we’ll eventually be getting cold weather again…

Crap, I’d forgotten about the Highland Games. Maybe I can do a bike ride tomorrow? Though, maybe not since I’ll be catching up on bills, getting a haircut, and most likely coming into work.

I think the Falcons may have a hard time stopping Carolina with Cam Newton at quarterback. I hope the can however.

We’re heading to Pine Mountain this afternoon. Jerry will be running the 50K and I’ll be manning the GUTS tent. Swing by for a moonpie if you’re out that way 🙂

It was cold enough this morning, I was wishing I had a pair of lightweight gloves while running.

I’ve given up on football this year, the Colts have just fallen apart without Peyton and despite last week’s win over Minnesota and the trouncing they gave Southeast Missouri State, I’m not hoping for much out of Purdue this year either.

Everyone have a great weekend and talk to you on Monday!!

Paulie- I’ve never made Shepherd’s Pie with lamb, I use ground hamburger & pork (and usually add some bacon bits, since that would have to make it better). I usually make it after making another meal with mashed potatoes – since we always make way too many mashed potatoes, I have my topping already done.

Martha (& Jerry) – have fun at the race!

  5. Jenka says:

We tried Tomatillo’s last night, and my verdict is: meh. The queso was the biggest disappointment, it tasted like it had flour in it. My taco salad was the best thing out of the meal, it was enormous and very good. I added steak to it. I would say it’s a substitute for Willy’s, if you’re not in the mood to drive up to ERD. Otherwise, go to Blue Frog or Matador.

I never use lamb in shepherd’s pie, always either ground beef or ground turkey. Barb, great idea to add bacon!

Have fun, Martha (& Jerry)! I’ll think of you as I run the Emory Winship Cancer 5K tomorrow morning. Heh!

  6. I’ve read that “Shepherd’s Pie” is made with lamb or mutton while “Cottage Pie” is made with beef. As Wikipedia is quick to point out this may be folk etymology.
