Many of my thoughts recently start with those two words — “If only”
“If only I didn’t ride Sunday.”
“If only I had gone hashing on Sunday.”
“If only those cars had been more cautious and not turned in front of me.”
“If only”
“If only”
“If only”
None of these will change history.
Taking Care Of Business
In my time at home I have been trying to take care of all the business that I must do. Yesterday I worked on some iOS coding stuff for most of the day. I’m working my way through the book so that when I can make it back in to the office I will be a iOS coding machine.
I’ve also started to take care of the open issues surrounding the wreck. I made an attempt to contact the Dekalb Police Department, but after waiting fifteen minutes for an operator to pick up the phone I hung up. I’ll be trying again today with more patience. The accident report is worrying me to no end. Because I was taken away in the ambulance rather quickly I was only able to give my personal information and my side of the story, so I wasn’t able to get a copy on the scene and I have no information about the driver. The accident report is a critical component for any case in which I might be involved, and to get the hospital to charge the driver’s insurance instead of me or my insurance.
ITP-Reader Martha Flickr Pics
ITP-Reader Martha, who generously picked the Red Rocket and me up from the hospital, has been holding my bike for the time being. She took some photos of the Red Rocket which show just how much impact I had when the car pulled in front of me on Sunday.
In this photo notice the separation of the head tube and the front forks, the fact that the front forks are much further back than they should be, and the fact that the front tire is no longer able to pass under the bike frame.
This is a closer-up shot of the tire.
Eating Like A King
Between the generosity of ITP-Readers Martha and Betsy I have been eating like a king. My breakfasts both yesterday and today have been a sausage, spinach, mushroom, and gruyere(?) quiche which was made by Martha and has been a wonderful way to start the day (and coat my belly against medications). Last night Betsy brought me a short-rib torta from Holy Taco and we watched an episode of “Two and a Half Men” since Charlie Sheen has been in the news and all.
I was finally able to something for myself yesterday. Because it doesn’t take much effort or motion to bake a loaf of bread in my bread maker I made a loaf of honey wheat bread. Admittedly the hardest part of the process was getting all of the ingredients to a central location on the counter in order to measure them and put them into the baking vessel. I don’t know if dropping things and knocking things over are emblematic results of trying to do things while on crutches but it seems if I had more than my fair share of mishaps yesterday. I was forced to pick up no fewer than three things from the floor, including the lid to the honey jar which fell honey-side down, of course, which forced me to return to the spot with a wet paper towel to wipe up the mess I created.
Today’s Agenda
I’m still at home today, still unable to walk or get around without crutches. My friend Jean (aka “Sanitary Not”, ITP-Reader Randy’s mother, woman responsible for convincing me to hash) who is a nurse, have convinced me that I should go in and get a followup checkup with my primary care physician as soon as possible. Since I am unable to drive I’ve called my doctor’s office and will be a “walk in” whenever I can get someone to drive me up there. (For the curious my doctor’s office is Highland Urgent Care and Family Medicine).
Tonight is Bike Maintenance Night at Kat and Mango’s. I may be heading over there for awhile (if I am up for it), ITP-Reader Betsy has offered a ride. The plan was to make a bike transfer to ITP-Reader Barb but I’m thinking about holding off until I can get a look at the bike’s condition myself and take some additional photos.
Regardless of whether or not I make a Bike Maintenance Night appearance, tonight is Top Chef night!

I guess I’ve never looked at a doctor office website, but do most doctors publish their prices? I guess this place has a lot of walk in cash customers?
We will be at bike maintenance night, regardless if you bring you bike or not, or you could bring it & just have Allan look at it if you don’t want to give it away yet.
I decided crock pot mac n cheese sounds good to go wtih Mango’s pork bbq, if that convinces you one way or the other.
Allan got the walls grouted yesterday, and today the floor gets installed, so very soon we will have a working bathroom in the garage (well, at least the toilet will be installed, we still need to decide on a sink & cabinet, & probably the faucets etc. for the shower & sink I have no idea what all Allan has purchased).
I don’t know how common or rare publishing prices is. It might have something to do with the office’s location (on Ponce, not far from the Clairmont).
I’m leaning toward going tonight, if all works out. I wish that I could get the lawyer consultation next week in order to get the process in motion. For the record I’m not hoping to need a lawyer for case representation, but as I’ve proven with my blundering Sharpened Stone having professional help can be beneficial since I’ve never been in this situation.
Glad to hear that the Garage Mahal is taking shape.
They are deliverying the BGE around 1 on Thursdays, so anytime in the morning or later in the afternoon, I’ll be free to help you out. I’m not 100% sure about transportation, Jerry may have the Escape but if you don’t mind, I can drive your car. Not sure what’s up on Friday, they will call between 7-9 to let me know when they will come out to put up the shed.
Paulie,
Glad to hear you’re mending…
I looked at HomeAway. You might also try http://www.airbnb.com/
I want to use one of these sometime myself…
Okie dokie. Not sure the accident report will even be ready this week. I’ll be trying to get through to an operator again today.
Huh, I have AirBnB on my iPhone and never thought to see if they had an accompanying website.
$469 for an MRI? Wow, my last one was at least $1500….it’s good to know about this place, sometimes I can’t get in to see my doctor for weeks (thankfully I don’t have to go often).
I’m glad you are getting a follow up with your doctor but it shouldn’t have taken a nurse to convince you it’s a good idea 😉
Oh the cheese was some ‘Italian blend’, I can’t remember everything but mozzarella was a major component.
How are you set on things? I can swing by after yoga tonight if you need anything before tomorrow.
Oh, two other things,
my own ‘health issues’, I’ve only had one bad breakout since visiting the doctor. It happend after a meal of Thai food. Since I’ve been eating the leftover spicy fried rice for three days, and no attack, I’m leaning towards blaming it on the fried tofu…man, I’d hate it if I’m allergic to soy. I haven’t had any since then, but I may have to test out my theory.
Next time you’re feeling a little down just think about this: You and Charlie Sheen are the same age…things could be much, much worse….
Oh, I was planning on a followup visit to a doctor, but not until next week at earliest.
I think I’m good on food, thanks. I still have half of the quiche, a banana (not wrapped in a plastic bag thankfully), an apple, as well as the bread and some sausage that I’ve had in the refrigerator.
Haha, I had no idea that I was the same age as Charlie Sheen; I knew we were close. I also did not know that his birth name was Carlos Irwin Estevez, nor that his brother Emilio was three years older than we are. I always assumed that Emilio was a younger brother for some reason.
His birthday is Sept 3rd, so he’s just a tad younger…I did know his ‘given name’ but I would have guessed Emilio was younger as well…see kids what drugs can do to you! I always like Emilio the most.
so, I’m starting the think Charlie is just messing with the reporters at this point…….. kind of like what Joaquin Phoenix did?
That is a hell of an impact to bend the forks that much. It’s a good thing you flipped over the hood or there may have been more damage to you. Our bodies don’t like sudden stops so much.
If your head tube is bent you may consider the bike totaled and turn it into wall art.
Yeah, I don’t know how fast I was going because the spedometer/odometer wasn’t working (and it flew off on impact) but up until the wreck I was having a great day of riding and felt pretty decent.
I have know idea what goes through Charlie Sheen’s head. In fact, I never had…
I think Bob is on to something. Short of having the head tube cut out and replaced- and without replacing the top and down tubes, making the frame shorter- you are through with that frame.
I have seen where a rider has hit something hard enough, and square enough, to leave rubber on the down tube, and in such cases, the fork is all that’s damaged. You get a whole new bike instead (hopefully).

It kooks like you chain just came off, it should be an easy fix. That is what Te told me about my bike when I was hit. It is totaled in my opinion as well.
I’m pretty sure the large front sprocket is bent too. While on the ground I also noticed an oddity with the front wheel, though it might have been the tube peeking out from the underside of the tire. If so, that was probably the point of impact.
If you would like, I can come by on my way home from Bob and Laura’s tonight and take a closer look.
Ugh. I felt kind of sick looking at those bike photos.
Dean has plenty of experience getting hit by cars, he might be able to give you some good advice 😉
and Dean – come by Kat & Mango’s………. I’m sure we will be there until 10pm. (we never leave before 10pm it seems)
