What A Long Strange Trip It Was

With the exception of 2003 I have done something on the Peachtree Road Race for the past ten years. The years 1996-2002 were as a number-wearing participant (I even made it into the Group 1A timegroup back then), while 2004-2006 were as a participant in the hashers’ Peachtree Pub Crawl Team.

The day started early, much like they did back in the days when I ran the race. I parked my car near my final destination and walked up 10th Street toward the Marta station. Along the way I had encounter #1, my friends Dave and Melodie were stopped in traffic, saw me, and called out my name. Weird. I jumped off Marta at Lindbergh and hoofed it up to Loco’s on Peachtree which was the start of the Pub Crawl.

Even I admit to be surprised how easily the first to beers went down by 8am yesterday. It was to be a long, hot day.

Encounter #2 occurred as “heckled people on” while standing near Loco’s. I saw one of my old roommate’s father and brother-law run by. Oddly, my former roommate Tom was nowhere to be seen.

The Pub Crawl jumped onto Peachtree somewhere around 8am. We moved at a blistering pace (for us) until reaching the Publix donut bagel stop. Bagels? WTF? What happened to the wonderful glazed donuts?

We moved along toward our beer stop at Peachtree Battle beer stop

Peachtree Pub Crawl @ Peachtree Battle

After consuming at Peachtree Battle we congo-lined our way up Peachtree before incorrectly pulling off the road to drink near Houston’s. For some reason there was no beer stop there this year.

Back on the road we hobbled our way to Mellow Mushroom where we sampled lovely beverages from Terrapin and Sweetwater.

The next few miles are a bit of a blur. I remember getting a beer at the next beer stop, one more at Jock’s n Jill’s a crossing the finish line with miraculous 3:07 time.

I awoke later in the day with all intentions of taking the camera out for some fireworks, but alas Mother Nature’s fury squelched that idea.

And now for some ideas stolen from LiveJournal…
