To another Friday at least.
Dali: Good Exhibit, Poor “Contributor Member” Experience
As I mentioned yesterday I headed to the High Museum for the Contributing Members’ Opening Reception for the Dali exhibit. This was the first time that I made an appearance at an opening reception, and it will most likely be my last. The “reception” was held in a small room in the lowest level of the old High building. The food at the reception consisted of chips with different types of salsa, some unidentified mini-quiches, and what I can best refer to as “chopped salmon sliders.” Luckily I’m not a vegetarian, for if I were I would have been outraged. As I expected, there was a cash bar.
As I was leaving the High I saw how a reception should take place. Apparently Audi had rented out the museum after hours and was throwing a cocktail party which was to be followed by a black-tablecloth dinner — remember this the next time you go to purchase an Audi. 😉
But enough about the bad, let’s focus on the good — the exhibit. As I normally would suggest, I suggest seeing this exhibit when the fewest number of people are attending. Dali’s small works are amazingly detailed and require the viewer to gaze and dissect them. Dali’s large works are outstanding, especially when viewed from the proper distance, which much like driving in Atlanta, will be filled immediately by hoards of people who disregard your space. According to the marketing material the exhibit contains nearly two hundred works, and if that’s the case then I’d say that you should concern yourself with at least one hundred of the stronger pieces.
Last night I also found out that the Salvador Dali Museum in St. Petersburg is moving to a new facility in 2011. Looks like I’ll have another reason go down and visit my mother next year.
I Just Can’t Help Myself
While waiting to get into the High Museum last night I wandered about the Woodruff Arts Center — home to the Atlanta Symphony, the Alliance Theatre, as well as the Hertz Stage. I happened to notice that the ticket office was still open as I milled about and before I knew it I had purchased a single subscription for the Hertz Stage, as well as two tickets for a performance of The Second City: Miracle On 1280 Peachtree Street. That’s right, I said two tickets to that show. I wonder which platonic-female friend will benefit from my inability to acquire a date this year?
I was glad that I was able to purchase “tickets” (I received a receipt and a promise that my physical tickets would be mailed to me. And while I’m thinking about it, why have physical tickets? Why not just do everything at will call or on a smart phone? What I was less-than-thrilled about was being charged a $10 “service fee” for purchasing my tickets at the box office. Seriously, all the extra fees which gouge me for attending shows will someday be the reason I stop attending shows.

There are still more shots from last weekend that I could have posted today. However, I neglected all of my post-processing this week so I’ll end the week on a beer note; specifically, the beer I drank after getting home from the Ocoee trip last weekend.
It was delicious.
You Want To Talk Jam-Packed?
This might be the most whirlwind weekend I’ve had in some time. I just got off the phone confirming a “day trip” up to Franklin, NC for some photography starting at dark o’clock tomorrow morning.
In addition to all of my camping gear I’m going to strap the Red Rocket to the top of the Jackmobile in order to do this ride on Sunday:
(Wow, that’s certainly an incredibly tacky frame, MapMyRide…)
That’s right, I’m taking the Red Rocket around Black Rock Mountain, starting and ending inside Black Rock Mountain State Park. This ride will be difficult (34 miles with some nasty elevation change.) but probably less difficult that Three Gap. I’ll be following the map counter-clockwise (just like NASCAR!) and if you click through on the map you may be able to see the elevation change.
My plan is to “camp” within the park, get up early for a little daybreak photography and then do my ride. After the ride it’s anybody’s guess where I’ll wind up.
Tune in again on Monday to find out…

A request. If you know of any awesome small restaurants for lunch or dinner between Clayton, GA and Franklin, NC please let me know in a comment. Thanks.
was the $10 service fee for the mailing of tickets? Weird – why wouldn’t they just print them & give them to you right then?
looks like an interesting ride – hope it goes well……
The guy in the box office explained that he was unable to print tickets because a subscription purchase receives special vouchers. From the way he mentioned a “one time $10 service charge” it sounded as if it’s a fee which somehow replaced the “convenience” fee. It seems they take extra money from their patrons one way or another.
I wish I had purchased a helmet-cam so I could record the ride. 🙂
Is there more than one Bass Pro Shop in Atlanta?
Boy, I’m ready for the weekend, I’m not sure I could have gotten out of bed if it had been any other day than Friday.
Since we are taking recommendations…anyone know of a good place to eat in Downtown Nashville?
I hope we get at least one good rain this weekend to help me save what’s left of my front yard.
I really don’t know. There is one out by Mall of Georgia, which is not Atlanta but could be considered “Atlanta.”
Martha, what sort of food in Nashville? I love Jack’s BBQ on Broadway. Out toward Vanderbilt there are a few decent places, including McDougal’s Chicken. Remember, you’ll be in Nashville, health food has yet to make it there. 😉 You can probably get something healthy(-ier) at the brewpub on Broadway whose name escapes me at the moment.
Martha-
There’s an Indian Vegetarian restaurant on West End called Woodlands. It’s on the left just before you get to I-440. There’s a great cafe in East Nashville(just over the bridge from downtown) call Marche Artisan Foods. You can’t go wrong there. In downtown Nashville, there’s Merchant’s at 4th and Broad. It used to be great when I lived there, has new owners now, so I can’t really say. There’s also a little honky-tonk called Robert’s Western Wear on lower Broad that has great burgers and fries.
Paulie-
I hate to sound daft, but how does MapMyRide know I’m in Atlanta? Nice improvement over the Google pedometer…
You know me Paulie, not a big meat/fried/southern food girl. Thanks Vic, the Cafe in E. Nashville looks perfect for breakfast, only two miles from my hotel perfect morning walk.
C’mon Martha, be true to your Midwestern roots. 😛 I ate at two vegetarian Indian places in Nashville when I was doing my 5/7ths vegetarian “diet” — I’m sure Woodlands was one of them.
I’m behind – only the one Bass Pro Shop in the atlanta area – up there at Discover Mills. I think the next closest one is over near Talledaga in Alabama.
Don’t worry, I’ll be spending 3 days in a place and with people that consider chicken the vegetarian option and jelly is a fruit. Plenty of opportunities of get in touch with my roots.
I will be trying to counter the effects by visiting crossfit gyms in Nashville and W.Lafayette and (hopefully) hitting the road for a few runs….highs are only in the mid 80s at home. This weather is killing me, I just have no desire to get outside. I’m renting a car, I don’t want to worry about car troubles, so I probably won’t be taking the bike. It’s too bad, Indiana is a great place to bike (ie flat).
Well you know me, I’m not much of an outdoorsman.
actually Paulie – Bass Pro Shop has a lot of good stuff (like REI) especially for camping. They just have lots more hunting & fishing & that sort of stuff……
damn it’s been a busy morning. I feel like it is a full moon with the weird problems I’ve been having.
Martha – when are you leaving?
I wish I was busy, its been a slow week at the office but I feel like I’ve got a lot done (non-work) this week. Feeling very productive (again non-work stuff).
I’m leaving on sometime on Thursday, I’m thinking noonish…take my time and hit Nashville around dinner time.
Man, this work day can’t end soon enough…
I did not know that, Barb. With a name like “Bass Pro Shops” I assumed it was all about fishin’ and huntin’.
Martha, I know that you know this, but keep in mind that Nashville’s rush hour is just about as fun as Atlanta’s.
Vic, I’ve been trying to figure out how MapMyRide knows that. If you clicked through my map it’s probably because I’ve set up my account telling it that I’m in Atlanta.
