Ugh

I realize the human body is a complex machine. I just wish my would stop going fubar. This morning I woke with a sore throat and some swelling, even though I had no indication of ill health when I finally went to sleep last night. Hopefully it’s just a little speed hump that I’ll clear quickly.
(update #1: and now I’m sneezing….. DANGEN!)

The Good Life Is Over
Last night I received the disc containing the only episode of The Good Life which was not available for streaming from Netflix. I watched what was the final episode of the series which aired on the BBC from 1975-1978 and mailed the disc back to Netflix this morning. I really enjoyed going back and watching that series from my youth (note: I watched it during its PBS run some time in the early 1980s). I only wish that this was the only “good life” to leave me this morning.

The well has run dry and I have nothing in the hopper to present. I’m not happy about this either.

44 Going On 45. BFD.
Have you heard about the hubbub that’s going on between Lance Armstrong and Outside magazine? Lance is pictured on the cover of this month’s issue. However, instead of the plain dark blue t-shirt that he wore for the shoot, the shirt has been Photoshopped to read “38. BFD.” and Lance is less than pleased about this.

I’m (Supposedly) Taking A Cooking Class Tonight
A camp cooking class.

For years I’ve been receiving emails from REI outlining classes they hold at their retail stores. Most of the time I peruse their offerings with minor interest. “Should I take that bicycle maintenance class?” “Hmmm, preparing for a long-distance bike ride looks interesting.” is what I usually mutter under my breath.

Recently I saw an offering relating to camp cooking being held at 6:30pm in the REI near my office. Well, I like to cook and I like to camp, so it seems like a natural combination for me. So, there is no riding for me today, even if I were healthy enough to do so.

RealiTV Update: Top Chef — No More Dreading This Season
Last night Top Chef: DC (also known as Season #7) started. Another slew of chefs, this time only one hailing from Atlanta, trying to attain the status of “Top Chef.”

It’s too early in the season to pick out faves and unfaves, and don’t get too attached from dreadlocks-John from Detroit as he was asked to pack up his knives and get the hell out of DC after trying to present a maple dessert using store-bought puff pastry. Don’t these people ever learn?

You have to be allergic to something…. maybe your house or something in your house? It seems you go to bed well & wake up sickly – isn’t that how it is? With all the plumbing issues – have you tested your house for mold?

As for Lance – I can’t believe they changed the shirt on him without telling him – that is pretty bad of Outside magazine. But – hey – they are getting lots of publicity, and as they say, any publicity can be considered good publicity.

Bike maintenance night at Mango’s – he’s smoking some pork, so come on by (with a beverage or two) and join us. I’m going to attempt to make a squash casserole for a side.

  2. I agree it does sound/feel like an allergy problem. No, I’ve never had the house tested for mold. With my luck the damn thing would need some sort of SupaDupa $5000 cleansing. ๐Ÿ™

I am a little (extra) pissed this morning because I forgot to strip the bed and take all of the bedding with me to the laundromat last night.

I’ll have to pass on Mango’s. I’ll either be well enough to go to the camp cooking class, or so miserable that I should not be around others. Have fun.

  3. Barb says:

and – that invite to Mango’s was to everyone – not just to Paulie. You don’t have to bring a bike to attend, unless it actually needs some work ๐Ÿ˜‰

  4. Haha, Barb. As I typed I realized that I was not the intended audience for the invite but I was already too far down the path to turn around. ๐Ÿ™‚

The only thing that needs improvement on my bike is the component that connects the seat, pedals, and handlebars. Well, not true, I do need to evaluate my seat position and pedal/cleat tension.

  5. Steve says:

Outside is the only magazine I subscribe to and I generally find it full of well written and informative articles. I don’t have a clue why they would make such a change- certainly without the subjects’ approval is a definite no-no.

  6. Martha says:

I could say something about waking up ‘swollen’ but I wont…

I wish I had rode my bike enough that it needed some maintenance ๐Ÿ™

My plan was to ride over but I’m not sure if that will happen now (at least my hands have stopped oozing). I brought my workout gear and I’m going to try to hit the dreadmill after lunch, then I can swing by Mango’s later.

Paulie, why don’t you look into a HEPA air/cleaner filter for your bedroom, a good one should take care of a lot of mold and other allergens. Or taking some Claritin (or the like) for a few days and see if the symptoms stop.

A camp cooking class, that sounds awesome, so does that mean you’re going to cook for FRD in November?? JK!

  7. FRD? I can’t place the acronym, but I assume it refers to the Black Sheep campout? I am cooking for Lake Hartwell again, though my position is sous-chef more than anything.

I think my health problems fall under the “Get the hell out of this house” category. (note to self: Downsize and Repair!)

  8. Martha says:

    FDR!

I’m sure the air quality in my house isn’t great. I’ll be due for a new furnace in the next couple of years, I’m sure the ducts are NASTY, then of course dog/cat hair, a damp crawl space…

You can count on me for help at Hartwell (I will be traveling solo), you know I have experience.

  9. Aaaaaah

I will gladly take your help! This year I’m going to try and get a larger burner for with some more umph! That should make things a bit better.

  10. Barb says:

I hope we can make it to Lake Hartwell this year (& FDR) – Allan bought a big turkey fryer burner & pot – I suppose I could lend it out if need be.

Now that we have the new Coleman portable camping grill – Allan thinks we need the whole big workstation (with sink!) We really need to get out camping with all the crap we own now.

  11. Martha says:

I would love to get some new camping gear, a smaller, easier to set up tent would be first on the list. Nibbles and I don’t need a lot of room and it’s not like I have to share it with anyone else (i.e. Jerry).

I just read today that baking soda is great to take camping since it can be used for dish-washing, pot-scrubbing, hand-cleaning, deodorant, toothpaste, and fire extinguisher. I would guess it would also help with a musty smelling tent. Guess I need to add a box or two to my supplies.

Jill has the campsite reserved for FDR, I’m already looking forward to all my autumn trips.

  12. Barb says:

Martha – we’ve got a smaller tent you can borrow to test out any time you want. We never use it – it has a little more floor space than a full size air matress – the one year I went on BRAG without Allan I used it, not bad for 1 but a little cozy for 2 (with stuff).

    what weekend is FDR?

  13. Martha says:

    FDR is Nov 5th-7th.

I may take you up on the tent, mine works just fine but a little difficult to put up without help.

  14. Vic says:

I was gonna say “I have a little swelling every morning!” Ba-dum-dump!

But seriously, I’ve put “The Good Life” on my Netflix list. Have you ever see “The Fall and Rise of Reginald Perrin”? It was 3 seasons long and I saw it on Sunday mornings on PBS in the 80s. The first 2 seasons were really funny…

  15. Vic, I used to watch that as well. Next up on my Memory Lane list is “Solo” (starring Felicity Kendal who plays Barbara Good), then I’ll watch “The Fall and Rise of Reginald Perrin”, and then if I can find it I’ll watch the Kelly Monteith show.
