Admitting Defeat

As we turn to the final page of the 2009 calendar I’ve come to the conclusion that I’ve failed — with one exception. I fully expect that none of my 2009 goals will be met, even if I were to quit my job and work on them exclusively. NONE!

Perhaps the only good thing to happen to me in 2009 was getting demoted from management back into the ranks of the engineers. I have been returned to my passion (as you will read shortly).

No Hockey Love, Deadlines Looming
I had a ticket to last night’s Atlanta Thrashers game. When I got the ticket (for free) I fully intended on attending the game.

However, add a rainy afternoon to a looming deadline and my love for writing software and the result is a late(r) night at the office and no hockey love.

Love writing software? Yep, that’s what I said. I am currently writing in C again and am attempting to teach myself PHP and CSS so that I can work on some web projects. For years I preached that if you do what you love then it’s not really work (I know, someone else said it before I did, but that doesn’t make it any more/less true.) and now I am once again practicing what I preach. Damn it feels good.

I have a knack for finding melting ice cream.
I Suspect Foul Play
Maybe this says less about my luck and more about the lazy people who don’t clean up after themselves.

One Shattered Glass Provides Me A (Thankfully Inexpensive) Reminder
For some reason last night I stopped at Grant Central East and picked up a calzone. I wasn’t even that hungry but knew that my house contained little-to-no food and that if I didn’t get *something* I’d be hungry later.

For some reason after drinking the glass of Gatorade that I prepared on Sunday night I did not return the glass to the kitchen.

Last night, as I whipped the box containing said calzone it struck said glass. The glass tipped, tumbled off the coffee table, onto my foot, and then to the floor where it shattered.

After minutes of picking up and vacuuming broken glass I had learned my lesson.

  • Had I eaten the calzone at Grant Central East (as I had initially intended this would not have happened.
  • Had I placed the glass back in the kitchen, as I should have, on Sunday night this would not have happened.
  • Had I been more careful when eating the calzone this would not have happened.

C’est la vie.

On the positive side I will now have more room in my cupboard. What, I’m trying to be positive here…

“World AIDS Day” Seems Inappropriately Named
Shouldn’t today be “World AIDS Eradication Day”, or at least “World AIDS Avoidance Day”? I mean on “Talk Like A Pirate Day” people talk like pirates, wouldn’t that logically mean on “World AIDS Day” people would try and go out and get AIDS?

And I wonder why I am so misunderstood…

Speaking of hockey love – I got the tickets we talked about (well, that Kevin & I talked about & you get to be his date 😉 Monday 12/21 vs. the Canadiens (sec. 307) & Thursday 1/14 vs. the Sabres (sec 309). Put the dates on the calendar.

Any other ITP readers are invited as well – we have nosebleed seats, but they were half price, (we will probably move closer after the first period).

  2. Sweet! Let me know how much I own and to whom and I’ll settle up at the food court before the first game (if not sooner). Thanks!

Nothing pisses me off more when I say to myself…”oh, I should do X because Y will happen”…I don’t, then it does.

You still have time to accomplish a goal or two…9 pounds in a month isn’t out of the question (a little tougher with the holidays here) and the book…you could do that in a month. Come on!!!

Re: World AIDS Day: That’s like the Sprint for Cancer 10K I do every spring. Every time I do it I say, “YAY for cancer!” and people look at me weird. It sounds like a pro-cancer fundraiser!

Sorry we didn’t call you on Sunday for dinner. We decided at the last minute to head over to Diesel Pizza around the corner from the park. With the decision being last-minute, keeping track of Cooper and working out whom to follow in an unfamiliar part of town, all thoughts of contacting you completely slipped my mind. If it’s any consolation, we ate dinner and immediately headed back to Sani’s to put the kids to bed and pack up for the trip back home – meeting us for dinner would have been a very abbreviated visit. Again, I apologize for not contacting you.

  6. Jenka: YAY for cancer! 😉

    Randy/Lisa:

HOW DARE YOU NOT CALL!!! 🙂

It’s alright. I wound up not eating anything else the rest of the night because I think that I had too much fried food for lunch.

Glad to see that you made it back home safely.
