Eight Crazy Nights

No, I’m not talking about that 2002 Adam Sandler movie. I’m talking about the eight nights (originally planned to be nine) of activities that I planned around my birthday last week.

Let’s recap:

I really wish I hadn’t been such a party-pooper for the Cracker show. Oh well, I guess one slip up isn’t that bad.

What’s next? An assault on my weight, house, happiness, and future…. nothing big.

And to think that I’m going to start it all off by having a relaxing night of sitting around watching Hell’s Kitchen tonight.

Let Us Continue The “War On Photography”
Even though after seeing the queue outside the 40 Watt Club last night I had all but made up my mind not to bring my dslr into the club I was more than taken aback by the signs explaining that the artist (M. Ward in this case) has requested that there would be absolutely no photography last night. To ensure the artist’s wish was upheld there were people roaming the crowd and confronting anyone who dare pull out a camera, or even a cameraphone.

I can understand an artist requesting a “no flash photography” concert, but in this day and age I think it’s a bit silly to request that no one take photos during a concert. We’ve paid to see the artist, who has chosen to be in the public’s eye by performing, let us have our fun.

I like this shot from last week’s Lookouts game. Why?
I'm Imagining That Photog's Photo With Me In It
First, the base runner is sharp (perhaps not tack sharp, but that’s a “me” problem). In addition the base runner, pitcher, and professional photographer with the bazooka lens make a nice line. Finally, the depth of field is such that the base runner is sharper than the pitcher, who is in turn sharper than the photographer. It’s the little things, really.

Do Paper Maps Make Sense Any Longer?
I love maps. I have always loved perusing maps. However, paper maps have a major drawback for the solo traveler — they can’t be easily read while driving.

Yesterday I decided that I would use one of the benefits of my AAA membership and order some updated maps for my car. And then it dawned on me. For the last trip to Nashville, in fact for most of the car trips I’ve taken over the past few years, I never referenced a paper map during the trip. Why? Because I own a Garmin Nüvi GPS, and more recently have come to rely on Google Maps for navigation (Canada not included).

Not only can these “new” technologies be easier used by the solo traveler, they also bring some additional features to the party that a paper map can’t match:

  • Points of Interest: Need to find a Starbuck’s to use a cup of WiFi? Electronic maps are often able to point you toward one.
  • Route Planning: Run into some unexpected traffic and/or road work? In nearly an instant and electronic map can reroute your trip in order to help get you out of the jam.

And in the case of the Nüvi, Jill’s voice completes the Jackmobile; it’s almost like traveling with a passenger. It is true, I am a sad little fat man…

One Sick MacBook
I love my MacBook, however, it has developed a habit that I can no longer stand so it’s time to make an appointment with the Apple Store for a little repair. The problem? Oh, just that the ‘W’ and ‘E’ keys tend to pop off the keyboard every time I type something — that’s all. I don’t know why I’m reacting so poorly to this, it’s not like I need perhaps the most used vowel and the letter I type at least three times for nearly every website, right? 😉

My only fear about taking my laptop in for repair is that I’ve upgraded my memory to 4GB and that may cause me grief if they have to replace the MacBook instead of fixing it. Even though I’ve had minor issues with my Apple hardware in the past this is the first time that I’ve had to bring something in for repair. Anyone with Apple Store repair experience? How can I ensure that I won’t get screwed? How can I prove that my hardware has been upgraded (by me) in case of a dispute?

Wow, I think you’re overdue for a nap! You must be worn out after all that adventuring. How was the M. Ward show itself? Yes, I’m still a bit grouchy that he did not come through Atlanta.

I love my mapbooks, but I’m usually the passenger, so it gives me something to look at while Allan drives. And, we don’t drink coffee, so there is no need for finding a Starbucks 😉

Someday we will get a GPS, but so far I’m not a huge fan, I’ve know too many people that rely on them so much, they can’t read a street sign, and drive around like idiots trying to find a place that if they’d just look around, they’d find it.

    Hey Paulie!
I’m glad you had a good seat and a good time at the Ryman. I love that place.

As for the “War On Photography”, I can assure you and your readers that it is ALWAYS at the “artist’s” request. The ushers and the venue could care less and it really makes their jobs harder. When I was at the Ryman, I sometimes felt more like security than an usher.

  4. @Romanlily: Photography issues aside two things would have made the show better. One, if the crowd would keep their damn mouths shut during the show. Two, if Matt would learn to smile and look like he’s enjoying the show too.

You should have gone last night. Heck, I’m sure I would have had a much nicer meal had there been someone with whom to eat. (note to self: stop punishing your body with crap food!)

@Barb: Starbucks was probably the worst example I could have used. I’ll blame the lack of sleep. I too love maps and mapbooks, but for me the electronic navigator has been a blessing, even when it sends me down dead-end roads. 😉

@Vic: I agree with you on artist/venue. I could even make an argument that photogs with their big lens (see also: me) hamper the performance for others. But cameraphone and point-and-shoot shots are rarely sales worthy, and from what I see of those trying to shoot at a concert must turn out incredibly blurry/grainy. I don’t slight the usher/security person for following and enforcing the rules — that’s his/her job.

My use of “War on Photography” is intentionally sensational. However, it amazes me how many times I hear of photographers getting confronted when taking photos. Hell, I even had that little tet-a-tet shooting at the Inman Park festival. Photography is legal, and 9/10 photographers are just shooting for their own joy. We all need to back off, settle down, and enjoy the time that we spin around the sun.

Excuse me… who are you and what did you do with Paulie?

I’m glad you had a great birthday celebration.

  6. Haven’t you seen how long my hair is? I’ve been forced to become a hippie.

And if you thought that statement was odd, what until you hear some of the crackpot shit that I have kicking around my head these days. 😉

  7. Barb says:

oh yeah Paulie – have I told you how much better I think you look with short hair? 😉

  8. Paulie [eatl/ga] says:

PSHAW! I’m purposely letting myself go. Why not, after six years of being single (yes, that says six. years.) I’ve given up on the pursuit of companionship. Hell, I’d grow a big bushy beard too if it weren’t so GD hot and fear that people would confuse me for a Indie Hipster from Brooklyn.

the only thing i’d say about photography, is it’s annoying as hell to the people not taking photos. The SLRs and phones have a big bright screen facing back towards anyone behind you, and its distracting. Plus the SLR-types generally like to push around to get their money shot.

  10. I agree the screens can be distracting. Because of this I always turn my photo preview off when I shoot at a concert.

I just found your blog and wanted to be sure you know that you can get your MacBook fixed right here in town. I am not trying to advertise, just make a suggestion. I am the owner of PeachMac here on Epps Bridge Parkway and you will not have to worry about the 4GB of RAM in your MacBook. Also, no appointment needed, although our service department will be closed this Thursday through Sunday for the sales tax holiday. Thanks.

    Darryl

  12. Thanks Darryl, I’ll keep PeachMac in mind as an option.
