They Say It’s No Longer My Birthday

Good time yesterday. Thanks for all of your birthday wishes. I’ve got another busy day ahead of me so this will be a short one.

Athens: Without UGA I’d Like This Place
Before last night’s Magnolia Electric Co. show I located a fancy-pants beer bar, which like all Athens bars did not allow smoking indoors (*ahem* it’s time Atlanta!), and bellied up to the bar. While sipping my beers I overheard the two guys next to me talking about Decatur’s Brick Store Pub; when their conversation transitioned to East Atlanta I couldn’t help but butt in. If the owners of The Glenwood read this, you can thank me for promoting your establishment later.

I must admit, I was more than a little taken aback when I exited 40 Watt at 1:00am to find the streets buzzing with partying youngsters (oh yes, I did say youngsters). I know, Athens is a college town, filled with drinking college kids, but it was only Wednesday (technically Thursday)! It very much reminded me of my old days in Buckhead.

I ended my night by locating The Grill where I had a cup of coffee and a large, chocolate milkshake.

I’m staying at what appears to be a fairly new Comfort Suites in Athens.
I Try To Stay At "Classy" Hotels
While it doesn’t seem to be in the “nicest” of neighborhoods, it’s about a mile or so Northeast of downtown, everything in my room is top-notch — well, as top-notch as I am used to getting.

And For My Next Trick — Chores, Followed By Fun
I’ll eventually be checking out, may take some time in Athens for fun, and then head back ITP to do some chores including laundry.

The day-after-birthday won’t be all (day off from) work and no play however as tonight I’ll be at The EARL for the Cracker show.

I use to love living in a college town (West Lafayette) during the summer. There was always a party, people just hung out, the bars weren’t crowded, at most you had an hour or two of summer school, wait, why did i graduate?

  2. Barb says:

So, I’ve finally got some time to read back thru all the old posts from while I was gone….. and I’m disappointed, no shout out on my birthday? Now I know how I rate, I won’t read it on that day, so I’m not even mentioned. 😉

When we were in Athens for BRAG, we didn’t get anywhere near downtown. There was a decent shopping area (with some restaurants) right near the school, so we didn’t even try to venture further. One of these days I’ll get to Athens to check out the college scene….. well, maybe.

You got a pre-birthday shout out, check the post for the day you went on vacation. 🙂

Also – I haven’t read my Tour talk.
Did anyone see that almost crash by Thor yesterday? That was some awesome bike handling skills, I so would have crashed over that barrier.
And – that crash by Jens Voigt? That had to hurt.

  5. Barb says:

sorry – not my, much was the word I meant.

  6. Martha says:

I watched the Voigt crash, heard he broke his cheek bone. Breaking my face doesn’t seem like fun.

I’ve only been to Athens 2 or 3 times (once was the Wheelhopper), it might make a fun day trip before school starts back in the fall.

  7. bob says:

Thor drifting into that corner was awesome! I wanted to talk about that last night Barb but you and Allan had not seen it yet.
The Jens crash was tough to watch, landing on your face can never be fun.

Speaking of crashes. Dean (aka jackass) was hit by a car yesterday while working. He spent the night at Grady and has 4 shiny staples in his head. Got a text from him this AM and said he is sore as hell but will be OK.

  8. Martha says:

I meant to ask about Dean. I saw something on FB last night but didn’t get the whole story. Didn’t he have another bike destroyed in the past week as well? Is someone trying to tell him something, not that he could be quiet long enough to listen. I’m glad to hear is going to be okay.

  9. Barb says:

sorry Bob – Allan & both had to work during the day, no time to watch 5 hours of tour coverage.

hey – Jens just needed to turn his head a little more & land on his helmet like I did….. and I think I like my new helmet even better.
Dean of course wasn’t wearing a helmet, I know it isn’t cool for messengers. What other bike did he destroy?

It’s been over a week since I’ve been on FB, but Allan is at the firehouse tonight, so maybe I’ll find time.

  10. Hey everyone! I’m home for a few minutes before I lug my laundry up to the laundromat.

Barb, you should work for a media or satellite tv company if you want to keep up with le Tour. 😉 I’ve not been talking much about it because I’ve been missing many stages, such as this morning’s time trial.

A few days back Dean said that a bus hit one of his bikes. At first I thought yesterday’s (the day before perhaps) accident wasn’t that bad — until I started reading some of the follow up comments.

  11. bob says:

Yeah, a few days ago a bus hit his bike. Yesterday he was hit by a cab that ran a red light. I just talked to him and he is doing well but still at Grady. He is not sure when he will be released, they are still monitoring him to make sure he is OK(well, as OK as Dean can get).

  12. Barb says:

I guess someone needs to go down to Grady to explain that dean is never “normal”, so they can’t apply regular guidelines?
