It’s The Start Of An Incredibly Busy Birthday Week

As if the weekend wasn’t crazy enough, I still have another week of obligations and traveling ahead of me.

Dirty, Dirty, Projectors
On Friday night I ventured out for the sold-out Dirty Projectors show at The EARL. I arrived shortly before the night’s opening act took the stage. The opener was billed as Atlas Sound, which is a side project of the Deerhunter’s lead man Bradford Cox. I had seen Atlas Sound once before, at lease Cox performing as a DJ, so I wasn’t too eager to make sure I saw the set. However, to my surprise on Friday night Atlas Sound was a combination of Cox and the Atlanta band The Selmanaires. I thoroughly enjoyed their set.

On that night the Dirty Projectors were driving from Baton Rouge, LA and running late. When they finally arrived they set up stage and a call was put out to make the show a “smoke free” show since at least one of the band members wasn’t feeling well. (fwiw- I wish that all shows were “smoke free”). The Dirty Projectors absolutely killed it! Even with a sick band member they put on a hell of a show. Admittedly the Dirty Projectors’ sound isn’t for everyone, but I had a great time.

What Was, And What Could Have Been
Yesterday I laid the Black Sheep Hash trail. It was perhaps the worst haring performance of my hashing “career.” But, that was all erased by the fact that friends went all the way to Buford to run the trail. It was great to see ITP-Readers Martha (who looked great and brought birthday cupcakes too!), BWanA, and Squid Dick
You Can Take A Man OTP, But When His Brain Has Been ITP-Wired He Gets All Confused
All I had to do was run out, turn left, and head toward the Applebees. Who knew that there would be seven Applebees surrounding the Mall of Georgia?

I was feeling confident yesterday. I was full expecting to get snared at least once, and more likely three times. What I didn’t expect was to get lost right out of the gate.

Here is the trail that I was supposed to lay.

And here is an approximation of the trail I laid.

I think you might be able to tell where I screwed up (look at that circular bit around the one mile mark). After getting snared for the first time, in part because I saw a house that I was not expecting to see, I turned left. Unfortunately my left turned into a NASCAR left and I took myself right back to the start. FAIL!

When I ran back, straight into the pack I knew I was going to have a tough day. I severely altered my part of the trail, making it much easier than I wanted but knew that Burnt Rubber’s section was swamp, so I knew that the pack wouldn’t be too disappointed in the trail.

And It Could Have Been Worse!
As I awaited the tail-end of the pack to arrive at the trail’s water (and beer) stop I noticed one of Gwinnett’s Finest milling about. He drove over to us, asked us what we were doing, and when I told him that we were trail running and this was our water stop he seemed to buy it. Luckily, had he gone into the water (and beer) cooler he would have found no empty beers.

And With This Trail You Get A Song

B-S-H-3
(to the tune of Y-M-C-A)

Young hound, here is something to know
I said, young hound, there’s a place you can go.
I said, young hound, for only seven bucks dough.
There’s no need to be un-happy.

Young hound, there’s no need to feel down
I said, young hound, watch that snake on the ground.
I said, young hound, your white socks have turned brown.
There’s no need to be un-happy.

It’s fun to hash with the B-S-H-3.
It’s fun to hash with the B-S-H-3.

You can run through the swamp, you can sit on the ice
You can do a down-down, and make everything nice…

It’s time for us to, drink it down-down.
It’s time for us to, drink it down-down.

In Conclusion
As it may be obvious by now, I was severely disappointed with my screw up. At least everyone seemed to have fun and no one got arrested. πŸ™‚

This weekend was more than just hashing. On Saturday morning I met up with a bunch of photographers at Cabbagetown’s Oakland Cemetery for a stroll through the cemetery. This group was one of the thousands who did similarly as part of Scott Kelby’s Worldwide Photo Walk.
In The Rough
I didn’t get many shots that thrilled me on Saturday, but I do like this shot of Bobby Jones’ headstone.

And For My Next Trick
Tonight I’ll be attending the photo critique night of the Roswell Photographic Society. For the first time I’ve submitted a photo for critique; it’s not one that will be universally enjoyed, so I’m interested to see how it is attacked.

I’ll show the photo here tomorrow with a summary of the criticism it raised.

You looped it twice it looks like! Whoopsie on that one, but easy enough to do as I learned on my last BSH haring experience… landmarks (or lack of the ones you expected) can kill ya! I had a softball game with EAV (we won!) and am sorry I missed it… nothing makes your heart sink like running INTO folks who are supposed to be chasing you….

I found a two-for-one chimney set-up for you yesterday down off of Roosevelt Road (hwy?) Do you have that one yet?

  2. Michelle says:

    Happy Birthday Paulie!

Sorry I missed the trail yesterday…love the song though.

  3. @Gentri:

I accidentally looped all the way to the start, wound up at our count-back. I decided to follow the count-back and wipe it out when I reached the mark, but when I did I saw the pack ahead of me waiting. DANGEN!

On a positive note I gave Burnt Rubber plenty of time to lay his section of the trail. πŸ˜‰

I don’t know where Roosevelt Road is, so I doubt that I’ve photographed that one.

    @Michelle:
    Thanks.

Apparently I missed my own trail as well. πŸ˜€

  4. Martha says:

Paulie, I had a great time…Jerry was laughing at me when I got home, I was talking a mile a minute, explaining the afternoon to him. It was great to see everyone and the weather was just perfect (even if I did get a bit of a burn on my back).

I am worn out today, I’m already thinking about bed time…27 miles in two days maybe too much, even for me. I can’t wait until next year πŸ˜‰

  5. Gentri says:

It is actually West and a bit South of where we had the ending of the trail we did last year. Roosevelt is apparently also rt 29…..

  6. @Gentri : Oh, okay. Then I don’t think I do have that one. I shot one near Cochran Mill Park, but that’s the only one in that vicinity that I’ve taken.

@Martha : Glad you had fun, and thanks again for the birthday cupcakes.

  7. sal says:

Sorry I missed your trail….but I did get a lot of yard work done yesterday afternoon. Great weather to be working outdoors!

First of many Happy Birthdays this week as you celebrate your week long birthday.

  8. brenan says:

Haring a trail can be a nerve wracking experience, indeed. Adrenalin lactic acid cotton mouth loss of sense of direction = @#%!@. You did good though, kid. We all had fun and nobody — not even Hired Snatch — got lost or seriously injured. Now about that poison ivy you (or Burnt) led us through…
    πŸ™‚

  9. Martha says:

Well, Hired did get hurt but he was walking on a sidewalk so I don’t think Paulie can be blamed for that.

I didn’t see the PI, I never do, but my arm are stinging from the saw grass and I think I still taste the swamp. Good times!!!!

  10. Hired nearly got injured seriously as he tripped over a curb and face planted as we walked along the sidewalk to the end.

Poison ivy? Surely you jest! πŸ˜‰

  11. There’s a small part of me that is sad that I didn’t do the swamp. My how my life has changed over ten years! Ten years ago I would have rightfully questioned why anyone would willfully enter a swamp.

However, I felt it my duty as a good hare (LOL) to make sure that my walkers made it in safely, well as much as you can do with Hired. πŸ˜‰

  12. Jenka says:

@Martha: if you’re already thinking about bed does that mean this afternoon’s running group is off? That’s FINE with me. πŸ™‚

@ Paulie: you know I have a Famous Dead People photo collection, right? Here’s me at Bobby Jones’ grave: http://www.flickr.com/photos/fyfe/2046833025/in/set-72157602276509685/

  13. Oh yeah, I’m well acquainted with your Famous Dead People collection. Some day I hope to have as many free-standing hearths as you have in your collection. πŸ™‚

  14. Martha says:

Jenka, I think the legs need a rest, I’m going to hit the pool tonight for a few (dozen) laps.

  15. Stacy says:

    Dude! Love the song!
