Will Hell’s Kitchen Close?

Yeah, right…

Rock On Alejandro, Rock On
I joined friend and ITP-Reader Betsy at Eddie’s Attic in Decatur for the Alejandro Escovedo show. If memory serves me right this is the fourth time I’ve seen Escovedo play (once at The EARL, once at Variety Playhouse, and twice at Eddie’s Attic).

Last night’s show was solid as usual, although the vibe in Eddie’s was a bit unusual — in a negative way.

Eddie’s Attic has a reputation of being a performers’ venue, it doesn’t allow smoking (I think this was in place prior to Decatur’s banning), and the crowds usually obey their request for silence. Last night however, common courtesy took a holiday. There were two guys who couldn’t seem to keep their emotions internal and shouted during the first two songs, eventually they were taken out and spoken to. Then there were the asshats who refused to turn off their cellphones. At one point Escovedo called people out and asked people to turn off their phones — as one or more produced the all-too-familiar DIRK-DIRK-DIRK over the speakers. People, especially my fellow iPhonians, your cameraphone photos of concerts fucking suck, give it up already! Oh, and you are not that important to warrant keeping your cellphone turned on. And if you happen to be a doctor attending a concert at Eddie’s for God’s sake make arrangements which allow you to be notified without having to keep your cellphone turned on. Remember, it’s a concert and it’s all about the performed, it’s not about you.

I Am The King Of The Snooze Bar
The other day I changed my final morning alarm to be snooze-enabled. What a mistake.

This morning I spent an extra forty-five minutes in bed, hey it was cool in the house and it was warm in bed. While I know that last night’s late bed time combined with this morning’s temperature differential made it easy to sleep in, this behavior is not acceptable and must end.

Small Bubbles, Red And Irritated Skin, Yep I Have Poison Ivy
DANGEN!
For as much as I love hashing there are some side affects that I could do without. I have found out that I am very sensitive to poison ivy and on a trail like Sunday’s there was no avoiding it.

The inside of my left arm is showing the beginnings of minor breakout; I have small bumps and a red patch, all of which itch. This doesn’t surprise me much since I ran in a short-sleeved shirt.

What really irritates me, both figuratively and literally, is that I have two patches on my legs! Those who have seen me hash during the past handful of years know that I wear running tights regardless of the temperature in order to ward off poison ivy as well as scratches from briers.

With all of the rain we’ve had this is going to be an interesting Summer.

Oh, and none of the “tried and true” methods of cleaning after a hash seem to help me. I’ve tried water/soap, rubbing down with alcohol, and the target-market products such as Tecnu all to no avail.

I got a new alarm clock a few weeks ago, the alarm volumm starts low and gradually increases…this isn’t working for me. The initial noise only wakes me up enough to reach over and hit snooze, I hit it at least 4 times today. I feel like I should be getting enough sleep but I’m still always so tired.

I filed my taxes on-line this year. It cost a bit more than I would like but saved me a ton of work. Plus I’ll have my refund (at least federal) in about 10 days. It isn’t much but it is mine. I really need to sort out my state witholding…my refund was a bit too high.

Thankfully I have never got PI on trail, I use to get it while working in the yard, but my neighbor Rob cleared most of it out for me. I’m going to try to make my return to hashing this weekend with PE’s trail. You should come also.

  2. I may make it to Enema’s trail… I still need to get to my 100th AH4. However, I’ll most likely use the one nice weekend weather day to go somewhere for some photography.

I used turbo tax (online) for my taxes a while back, I got the state refund in a week or so (on a friday) and the federal the very next friday. We were paying someone to do it, but I realized finally they aren’t that tough, I really should do them myself.

Poison Ivy loves me, that is one of my many excuses to rarely do the running hashes. That, and my back really doesn’t like hamster land.

It’s a little late to be getting the first signs of Poison Ivy from Sunday, but… the first signs usually appear in about 48 hours. You’re right, trying to wash off Poison Ivy at the end of a run is pretty useless. It doesn’t matter much if you use alcohol or soap and water. About a third of the resin (urushiol) is absorbed within 10 minutes of exposure and 90% is absorbed within 1/2 hour. If you are exposed to it late in the trail, though, it’s worth a shot.
I always wear long pants and long sleeves too; I’ve been lucky and haven’t ever had a reaction (yet – knock on wood). Another approach to prevention is the “barrier” creams. Some work better than others. OnGard and IvyBlock are a couple of the more popular ones that people have had success with. OnGard is relatively sweat proof and lasts about 4 hours.
By-the-by, you may have also solved last winter’s mystery of the possible nut allergy too. Some nuts contain low levels or urushiol, the same allergen that’s present in poison ivy.

  5. Huh, I did not know most of that…

You caught me in a slight fib. The breakout on my arm probably started late Tuesday early yesterday and I was hoping that it was not poison ivy. The breakout on my legs is just beginning to flare up, however.

Have you ever heard of anyone spraying deodorant as a protective layer? Look for me to be out running in long sleeves and taking great care not to drag the outer layer onto my skin when I disrobe.

  6. Steve says:

My exposure to PI has always been if I haven’t wiped down with rubbing alcohol soon after getting in- my assumption was I wasn’t as susceptable as others (i.e. YOU). I remember many trails where it was unavoidable, but never had any major outbreaks as long as I wiped down.

B-Bob.. any idea why my theory seems to hold (for me, at least)?
