Nothing earthshaking happened in my world this weekend. I chose cleaning up WLF over getting on my bike. WLF isn’t producing much, but it needed (and still needs) cleanup work to get rid of plants which have grown too old or big, and to start preparing for a Fall crop.
Last night I did some hotel booking for Europe (and still need to do more). I have decided to return to Düsseldorf for a few days prior to meeting up with the gang in Brussels before starting the ride in Bruges. (As an aside, ITP-Reader Barb I booked into the same hotel in Brussels that you have. So, if you don’t want to be in the same hotel, rebook since my reservation is non-refundable. Hahaha) I will have a few days alone after the week of riding, and might stay in the Netherlands, or I make a day-trip to a German town to experience one night of Oktoberfest. It’s been so long since I’ve travelled abroad that I forgot the names of the hotels, and the methods I used to book them.
I am also trying to decide whether I want to do a camping trip in September. I’ve been looking at a few different parks, most of which I have visited in the past. I have all the camping gear, and a free night of camping in Georgia, so it seems as if I should be using these.
More choring today…
Wordle: five, my starter was ACORN
Connections: perfect, Blue > Green > Yellow > Purple
Been looking at Hurricane Debby (with a ‘y’), and thankful that I am no longer a co-owner of a house in Florida.
Wordle in 4. I must have forgotten to Wordle yesterday, as I’m back to one in a row!
Exciting women’s RR yesterday. I thought for sure she was going to get caught, but the other 3 looked at each other to chase while she rode away. A great move.
Got up early yesterday (well, 8:30) to get 24 on the gravel bike and it was STILL pretty hot. I picked my route for shade and it worked well except for the last few miles, which could have used some shade!
Drove to Lafayette, AL yesterday afternoon to look at a horse trailer for sale. Decided that we need a taller trailer (Phinney and Cash are both tall boys) but needed to see it in person. We may be on the road to Ocala to shop. Lots of trailers in horse country.

Good on ya! It’s funny, I still like riding my bike but I find myself choosing everything but when alone.
Barb said that Kristen was supported by the Second Best Mechanic in the Grove family. Barb, please correct me if I misunderstood. I heard an interview with Kristen earlier in the year, back when the Bobby and Jens podcast was still publishing episodes I believe, and she sounded like a down to earth person; Olympic Champion — not a bad achievement for someone who started cycling in 2017!!!
Remember in June when I mentioned that I exhausted all of the water supply from my rain barrels? Well, they are now at capacity again!
Wordle in 4 starting with COVER. Perfect Connections: g, b, p, y. I had to use a hint to get started in Strands.
The Olympics have been fun to watch. The men’s 100 finals yesterday was so tight. Hard to tell who won but in the end they decided the USA did. 1st gold in 20 years.
I worked on Saturday. Went for a walk that even and dropped off some shoes for Libby. I stopped in later and hung out at Donna’s pool for a bit with her and Red Eye. Ran Sunday morning and then went to Lenny’s on the square for their 10th anniversary celebration. It was really nice. Met up with Slim and Celi and her son Issac.
Later that evening I learned I lost another good friend to a cardiac event. Apparently while out running. That’s too many this year. Curious as to why the uptick in cardiac events. I still blame COVID and/or the Vaccine. He was younger than me and in a lot better shape. We had just talked about going backpacking in the near future.
I get Mia and Emma for the week. Will be nice to have some doggie snuggles.
In better shape than you? Wow. I’m sorry for your loss. Sounds a little like Cooler Killer.
Thanks Steve. It does sound similar to Cooler Killer, although Cooler Killer wasn’t feeling well and made an appt to see a doctor but didn’t make it. My friend had no symptoms and even ran a race on Saturday in a great time. You just never know!!! Still trying to process.
Oh, I hadn’t heard about Cooler Killer. 🙁
I’m sorry to hear about your friend as well, Sal.
Being a man of a certain age, with personal as well as family history, and not in the greatest of shape, I unfortunately fully understand the potential for cardiac failure.
Cooler Killer hasn’t been with us for many many years!
Oh, I think I have confused him with Killer Bee (again)
Speaking of old time hashers, I have just returned from a Home Depot trip, Lawrenceville Hwy since that was the closest one with product in stock (bags of mushroom compost), and saw On The Rag out for a run.
I used two hints to get through Strands today.
Yeah, it was a little harder some I’m not rolling in it! Lol
Since
Hahahaha, me neither
I’m back in Iowa.
We watched the women’s race at Brass Tap in Hapeville, even though we knew the outcome. Kevin was in the car following her. Funny she’s there for track racing, but what the hell, do the road race & get a Gold medal!!!
Flight was on time – took off out of F14, you can see the drop off area from the window. Went thru International since I was taking off from F – won’t do that again in the evening – it was way too busy, and they had no PreCheck lane open. I forgot to take my computer out of my bag, so had to wait to get it re-screened.
I still don’t “get” domestic out of F. And no disrespect, but domestic to Des Moines? Ran outta gates in the main terminal?
the plane we were loading on came from Mexico City – so, those people had to go thru customs.
And – its Cedar Rapids silly
Des Moines, Cedar Rapids, small domestic markets… and the plane came from MEX? Wow…
Steve, when we flew home from Savannah a couple weeks ago the plane was a huge international plane. We were in first class and we were sitting in those pods that lay flat. I’ve never been in one of those pods, I can see how it would be VERY nice for an overnight international flight! But yeah, it was quite an interesting plane choice for a 39 minute flight from SAV-ATL.
That just seems like a poor use of resources. A shame Dunkin’ Honut doesn’t read the blog- this is sort of her line of work.
she doesn’t work for/with the airlines anymore – she was with Otter Box for a while out there in Fort Collins, but I think she’s moved on from them too.
Jenka- I finally saw a ok upgrade price (miles) to the D1 pods for our flight to Amsterdam – I’ll let you know how comfy it is.
And I’m too cheap to upgrade, so I will be cramped in my Cattle Class seat, probably with a person in front of me who has reclined to the maximum…
Currently upgrade to Comfort+ is $1200, DeltaOne is $1550.
Oooh, I bet that’ll be really comfy! Enjoy!
Paul – it was less than $1000 (so less than 100,000 miles) so I decided to splurge
I’ll be in the back along with you Paulie! I don’t have the miles or the money. 🙂
A pretty good weekend. As you know, my old boss rolled off being dean on July 31. She wanted to thank me (and another co-worker) for all of our good work while she was dean so she took us to the Fox on Saturday to see Funny Girl, and then we had dinner at Alma Cocina. A fun excursion!
Back to the grind. Need to start playing the lottery!
Ugh, stock market is getting slaughtered today…
Here’s my take on the stock market – it has gone up too much, too fast- so a little down isn’t that surprising.
Not surprising nor concerning really. I should probably plan to start cashing out some of my stock if the market increases again.
I just put a hold on the living quarters trailer shopping until the market picks back up. Pulling a chunk out of the 401k isn’t wise at the moment.
Made myself a grilled cheese sandwich for lunch. I decided to see how my Cowboy Candy tasted after a few days of chilling in the fridge. Verdict: it is still incredibly spicy, with a very sweet aftertaste.
The sandwich is tasty, I think the American cheese like slices further mellowing the Cowboy Candy.
now I might make Dad & me cheese sandwiches for lunch…..
I wonder if my hoarder brother still has that big hunk of govt cheese in the fridge. (its like Velveeta – it will last foreve)
Do it! 😀
Dumped one bag of the mushroom compost I bought today, I think HD is doing a little bait and switch since the bags I received look nothing like the item I ordered, but I needed it so there’s that, into two of my compost bins. One bin is brand new, as in I just emptied it of the compost that it created, and one is the hottest of my three bins, as in it has a lot of raw material which needs to break down for a while.
I know y’all aren’t trackies, but in the team sprint, the Aussie women set a world record, then the Kiwi’s in the next heat said hold my beer, then the Brits in the next heat said you BOTH can hold my beer. 3 WR’s in a row…
wow!!! I think Kevin is working those races too – I think
There are NO Americans racing today. Maybe you have to meet a standard and since we don’t really have a track program…
