I had a busy day yesterday doing many chores, and will have another one today as I prepare to get ready for Spring Tune Up.

Last night I tested out my hip and bicycle by riding the Meltons ride. During the ride my hip felt fine, though the same cannot be said this morning. I will attempt to ride on Friday, and make adjustments for the rest of the weekend based on my level of pain.

It sounds as if one of my favorite podcasts is going away again. I have listened to “On Taking Pictures” since near its inception, and was bummed when one of the people walked away from it in 2018. When I discovered that it had been rebooted in 2022 I was elated and listened to all of the episodes I had missed. This week the guy who quit the podcast in 2018 has intimated that once again he has lost the passion for it, and that the podcast has once again come to a conclusion. Bummer.

Wordle: three, my starter was REACH
Connections: perfect, Yellow > Green > Blue > Purple

Wordle in 4 starting with FROGS. Connections: yellow, blue, green, purple. Easy Strands.

I accomplished a lot yesterday but not everything that needs to get done around here. Never ending chores. It was rather warm for the run last night. But nice for hanging out in the parking lot later. 🙂

Next up STU. Still need to get groceries and pack.

  2. Companies continue to make things difficult for me.

    – T-Mobile rebate has never arrived, and it seems impossible for me to find out why
    – trying to set up electronic transfer between two banks, and Bank A (a major financial institution) seems inept at this. Twice the verification of this transfer has “failed” and my only recourse is to start over again. Fuck off, Bank A! I’m now going to write a check to myself, and try that.

    • I just had a “Senior Moment”. I have used the same PIN since getting my first ATM card in the 1980s, and couldn’t remember it! I think it’s because I rarely need to enter the PIN now, so it just slipped from my mind.

Wordle in 4, I had to walk away and come back because I was not seeing it after 3. I understood why once the word revealed itself. I got purple first on Connections, and then had one miss.

I meant to mention that I heard a righteous remake of Box of Rain at Fellini’s the other night. Shazam told me that it was by Kurt Vile and the Violators. It’s from an album called Day of the Dead that has literally dozens of indie bands covering Grateful Dead songs. I’ve been surprised by some of the bands in the mix, including Orchestra Baobab (one of my long time favorites). This is a summertime porch sitting jam if I’ve ever heard one: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8pUdLXwKDwI. This album is going to be my musical accompaniment for a bit.

Bunch of dead ants in the camper this morning, taro traps I put in there seem to be doing the job. Hopefully I’m getting ahead of them. Moved the camper to the driveway hoping to cut off the source. Tonight is final clean up, prep, and pack. I’ll be ready to roll in the morning.
Last night we picked up bowling balls for Laura and Travis. If there is ever another chedderhead challenge we will be ready!! Knoll family will dominate!

    • Barb says:

We almost always spray around the wheels on the camper to hopefully stop them damn ants from climbing up.
      Hope they are eradicated.

Where did you buy bowling balls?
at the alley you’ve been bowling at?
did they get fun design ones?

      • Bob says:

Yeah, owning a camper is a constant learning experience. I should have put in ant traps when I winterized so lesson learned.

We got the bowling balls at Bowlero in Roswell. The guy in the shop is super nice and made sure the fit was right and even adjusted it on the spot when we bowled a game.
No crazy design but also not a solid color, so sort of fun?

Two days away from our huge gala honoring my boss’ retirement at the Piedmont Driving Club. Shit is getting really hectic around here! I will be glad when it is OVER.

  6. Barb says:

wow – blue, purple, green, yellow.
    not sure why I couldn’t see yellow………..

got lucky – Wordle in 3

Stands is a game to waste time on – I’m not a huge fan, might mess with it later

  7. David says:

Paulie, my ex’s hip pain started and stayed in a similar way and eventually she had to have a hip replacement. I’m not saying that’s the track you’re on, just that your descriptions are starting to align with a pattern that I’ve seen. It did fix her hip in the end!

    • Well hopefully it doesn’t come to that for me. I’ll be hanging out with someone who just went through it, so I’ll be chatting to him about his experience.

    • Barb says:

Paulie – sounds like this weekend is a good opportunity to talk to Brint about how he decided it was time for a new hip

    • Bob says:

Hip replacements are all the rage too! Brint got a new hip and Mango got 2 new hips. Maybe you are next 🙂

      • Hope not. I can’t imagine how much that would cost me with my shitty Kaiser insurance.

        • Barb says:

you don’t know it will be shitty for something major.
It might be, but you don’tknow until you try to price it.

I just got word we are switching from Aetna to Blue Cross Blue Shield of Illinois.
I think Aetna is way better in my experience.
I need to go thru the benefits email & select all new stuff.

  8. Oh, Kaiser is moving to a new payment system! How exciting!
And, once moved you can no longer access past payment history! How thoughtless of them!

  9. Barb says:

learning weird shit about my Wahoo computer – you aren’t supposed to use Apple branded USB blocks as they won’t fully charge it.
Allan was getting annoyed -“why won’t it charge past 2 bars?”
a video later – I knew the answer.
and I originally charged it with 1 at our desk – that isn’t an Apple block, so I had no idea why it wasn’t charging out in the garage.

    • Jenka says:

That is so annoying. I wish all chargers would be standardized. They will be soon, with the EU’s new rule that all chargers need to be USB-C.

      • I believe the EU has too much influence in matters of technology. The market should dictate innovation, not government.

        • David says:

The problem is the “market” comes up with proprietary bullshit like non-standard adapters. There wouldn’t be anything for the government to weigh in on if tech companies would just do shit right.

        • Not a problem IMHO.

What makes people think USB-C is the be all to end all? This is from the same consortium that gave us USB-A, mini-USB, and micro-USB.

If you want to see how great government “standardization” is, let’t talk power grids, 110V verses 220V, and the need to carry a bevy of electrical socket adapters when traveling abroad.

          • Jenka says:

I don’t think the USB-C is the end all, I just want everyone to decide on one. I don’t care which one we choose.

        • In one of my early jobs I saw a big poster that had an intricate tree of information, and its title was “What’s Great About Standards? That There Are So Many Of Them!”

    • I assume you mean the white bit you plug into the wall? I’ve always charged my Wahoo with either a USB hub plugged into the wall, or a portable battery block.

      • David says:

She’s saying that the Apple-branded USB chargers have some properietary workings that cause them not to fully charge Wahoo devices. The first goddamn word in USB is UNIVERSAL, for Christ’s sake.

        • You know better than to take that word literally.

Did you know that there are UNIVERSAL SERIAL BUS type C cables which can only transfer data and not power? And not all USB-C cables can transfer data at the same rate? What’s universal about that?

      • Barb says:

yes- the white block thing that plugs into the socket.

        • And finally, thanks Barb. I am sure at one point in the future I would have used an Apple USB charging block to charge my Wahoo, now I won’t.

          • Barb says:

it has to have 10 or more volts? (I already forgot what the video said) and the 1 I used says 5.3V — 2.0A (that means -more than 10 for my non technical brain)

  10. David says:

ChatGPT just gets better and better for me. I was stuck on trying to come up with an example of a macro to include in an Excel/AI webinar that I’m teaching next week. It occurred to me to ask it what are the top 5 macros that people ask for help with. I then asked for code for one of the examples, which I could then copy and paste. I’m going to have some fun with this…what are the top 20 worksheet functions in Excel that people ask about? Which Excel features cause people the most frustration? I’ll never have to make up a webinar topic from scratch ever again! 🙂 People are going to think that I can read their minds! 😉

    • You continue to feed the machine!
You will put us all out of work!

      😉

    • David says:

Thanks to ChatGPT, I continue to learn the actual names for aspects of Excel that up to this point I always referred to in layman’s terms. Which isn’t terrible as a speaker/writer, but I’m learning things that just wouldn’t have been possible get at with Google searches. Case in point:

What is the name for this type of convention within the include argument of Excel’s FILTER function? (A2:A51=”North GA”)*(B2:B51=”Atlanta”) Is it an array? Here’s the full formula for context: =FILTER(A2:F51,(A2:A51=”North GA”)*(B2:B51=”Atlanta”))

Turns out it’s an array formula or an array operation. I never knew. I know y’all were just dying to learn that today. You’re welcome. 😉 😉 😉

      • Barb says:

I use Excel – but all that is advanced Ecel that I do not ever used.
(and it probably really isn’t advanced)

  11. Darn it, I forgot that I wanted to watch La Flèche Wallonne this morning. Guess I scan through the replay on Peacock.

Wordle in 4, yellow, blue, purple, green with one mistake in Connections.

Beautiful ride this morning. I’m logging miles for a Virtual Tevis Cup completion (the equestrian version of Western States) and am up to 21 miles in four rides. It’s a fun way to put miles and conditioning in on the new horse. He’s being very good. We’ve run into some obstacles, but he’s keeping his head about him as he figures them out. I’m really hopeful that he’s going to cut it as a hunt horse.

Appointment with my new primary care doc this afternoon. I hope she is more responsive then the one I’ve been seeing since we moved down. No major issues, but lots of little ones that I sure would love to have resolved.

  13. Steve says:

Good afternoon from Newark. Sadly, I’m stuck at 5 on Wordle with the first, second and fifth letters and not a lot of ideas.

Dinner last night at Tops Diner (Thank you David!). After an Uber fail on pickup, I hoofed it the bit over a mile. It may have been a “diner” when it started out in the 1930’s, but there is not a lot of diner left. An L shaped bar being serverd by 3 bar tenders, probably 40 tables spread across a large area and a patio (not yet open) – some high end entrée’s and some standard diner fare. I had shrimp parmigiana which was excellent. The other choice would have been meat loaf.

Working hard as usual- just now coming up for air to add to the blogosphere.
