I think that I have mentioned that a couple of months ago I started reading the “Hamish Macbeth” series written by MC Beaton; I have been doing so on my iPad. I am currently reading the seventh book in the series, having checked each out digitally from the Dekalb library system. Last night I dusted off the olde Kindle, plugged it in since the battery was spent, and started using it to read. I had forgotten what a great device a Kindle is for books which do not have accompanying pictures.
Things that I cannot locate in my house currently
– flat cheese grater
– ice pack holder
– pill box, you know the type in which you put a day’s worth of pills
I’m struggling with a choice. Do I continue to feed the Amazon beast by purchasing some books, the type which cannot be checked out of a library, or do I support the local bookseller? There are three puzzle books in the Murdle series, which if purchased from Amazon would cost me $35, and if purchased from the local bookseller would cost me $47. If I were earning my old salary I’d definitely throw the local shop a bone, but $12 is $12, and is nothing at which to sneeze when your income is $0.
It was my turn to provide food last night. Even though I have been doing a lot of cooking of late, I wasn’t in the mood yesterday so Betsy and I had Aldi pizza and salad.
Wordle: five, my starter was MAUVE
Connections: perfect, Yellow > Blue > Purple > Green
First….
Apparently you are calling out Steve. Steve, it’s time to up your game! Hahaha
Wordle in 3, Connections perfect.
My other birthday gift to myself arrived yesterday- real NY bagels! A half dozen sesame for me and a half dozen cinnamon raisin for Debbie. After I got home, we each had one- oh so good!
If Debbie can find another horse to ride, we may be heading north to Greensboro tomorrow. One she had her eyes on has already sold, so no trip for just one. I only have one meeting so it will be easy to slip away…
Zwift had an Ineos-Grenadiers workout I rode last night- 45 minutes. Not a blood letting like the old Sufferfest rides, but still pretty good.
And thanks, Nick Saban for all the wins. Wonder if he would still be retiring if he had won the national championship?
-FP
Sufferfest is now owned / cobranded with Wahoo?
Oh you kids and your horses… 🙂
Didn’t see the Saban news. Interstate since I think he signed a contract extension two (?) years ago? Yes, he’s an old, multimillionaire, so it makes sense I suppose. I doubt he’s taking another swing at the NFL…
And sadly, his retirement only strengthens UGA…
Oooooooh, where did you order the bagels from?!
newyorkerbagels.com
is reading on the Kindle that different from the iPad?
For me, yes. The Kindle has fewer distractions; no email, no messaging, no notifications, etc.
I have a hard time reading on an electronic device. I need the physical book.
Wordle in 3 starting with OILER. Perfect Connections: yellow, blue, green, purple.
I put a piece of cardboard under my car last night and it doesn’t appear it leaked any oil. So hopefully they fixed their mistake.
Working all day today when it’s going to be so nice out.
Good idea, Sal! Glad it appears that they got it right this time.
I am a true minimalist and read books on my phone. 🙂
Now that, I cannot do. Perhaps if I bought one of those huge iPhones now put out by Apple, you know the ones as large as what we used to call a “phablet”.
didn’t do much yesterday –
watched a Netflix 8 episodes & done show called Fool Me Once.
The author (of the book) is Harlan Coben – and there are more adaptations of his books on Netflix, so I think I’ll be on a new kick for a few days. Good mystery, suspense type of show.
$12 and a kind word to a bartender will get you a beer these days.
Steve, do you know about Emerald City Bagels in EAV? I like them just as much as the NY bagel that I had a couple of weeks ago. And good for you to treat yo’self.
I caught up with my fellow parent friend Dave at Elsewhere last night for a beer. Our kids started at Montessori school together, and all go to Paideia. He was the WSB sports cameraman for 17 years so he has lots of great stories. I regaled him with stories from my 2023 travels. We’ll meet up again soon.
Wordle in 4 starting with HAIRY. Clean Connections, solved purple second.
never in a million years would I have gotten purple – because one of the 4 doesn’t make sense to me. Guess I’ll google that.
Purple is almost always the dregs for me.
Correct about the $12, which is one reason I am not going out to drink as much as I would like to. I have also a quandary regarding YouTube Premium which I will discuss in tomorrow’s blog post.
YouTube premium is 100% worth it for me. Your opinion may vary but I watch a LOT of you tube and having no ads is worth the money.
What do you pay monthly? This is the crux of what I will mention tomorrow.
I pay $14 a month.
Thanks. One more question. Are you able to watch it on your tv as well as phone? Not necessarily at the same time, mind you.
Yeah man, I have a smart TV that has the app and a fire stick on another TV and can watch it there too. When I travel I will sign in on whatever TV is there if I want to watch something too. It is tied to my Google account so if I forget to sign out I can just do it online. It’s really convenient.
Thanks!
Not that I don’t like to support the local establishments, but EAV is juuuuust a little out of the way for me. The FedEx truck comes to the house!! (I will keep them in mind for weekend work events, thanks.)
I get it! 🙂 For some reason I have been conditioned to offer solutions that fit within a limited budget in this space. 🙂 Not that Emerald City is inexpensive, there’s just no shipping. Keep makin’ it rain over there, Steve!
I like bagels, but not enough to order some to be shipped.
Allan was on a bagel kick for a while, (just grocery store bagels) but he’s off it for now.
Grocery store bagels are just round bread.
A good bagel is night and day difference.
I’m with Jenka in wanting to know where you ordered them from Steve. Fess up! 🙂
I know there’s a huge difference between them – I’ve just never liked them enough to go out of my way for a bagel. I do like bagels.
I eat bagels from Emerald City (it’s in my hood) and when in Florida I try to visit Clearwater Bagels, who are NYers who moved to Clearwater over forty years ago (you are shocked by this, I’m sure).
Now he’s teasing us! We’re dying over here, Steve!
Probably Einstein Bros. 😛
I’m guessing Goldbelly.
He posted it up the page ^ under my comment (because he likes me better than you all): newyorkerbagels.com.
I looked at their menu, they don’t even offer a salt bagel! They have a QUINOA bagel but not a salt bagel? Pfft. I question their legitimacy.
Jenka made me LOL
I’m with ya Jenka. WTF is a quinoa bagel?
My guess is it’s for the gluten free people.
Connections –
Blue was so obvious I thought – there’s no way, I’m going to waste a guess
Blue – Green – Yellow – Purple
Wordle took me 5 –
thought I had it in 3, then 4, then finally got the right letters in 5.
Our house is completely cased in plastic. Finn’s school does not have a cafeteria which means we have to make a lunch for him every day. I had to gently pull up the plastic in the kitchen and duck underneath to assemble a sandwich and snacks for him to eat today. It was a challenge!
We went to Pure and hung out there for like three hours so Kevin could watch the UNC game.
Paulie, I am feeling your annoyance as in the past month ATL has put up a stop sign at every. Single. Intersection on McLendon and Euclid, which are the two streets I have to drive on to get anywhere. I am fucking frustrated.
fun times Jenka – but – you are in the homestretch!!!
I am? Still so much to do. Half of the counters, all of the backsplash, the stove and downdraft. Don’t even get me started on the bathroom — they finished the tile but that’s all they’ve done. No vanity, toilet, shower. All of the ceiling fans and light fixtures. UGH.
I thought they were further along -& the paint was some of the last parts. Sorry……….
Yeah, you would think the painting would be one of the last things. I don’t pretend to know why the contractor does the things he does.
I hear ya!I can’t tell if they are opening ATMs by doing this, or are trying new and annoying ways to stifle traffic.
The funny thing is that I am totally the reason why they put those stop signs up. I go down those roads at 40 miles an hour.
A true menace to society. 😉
Totally got a ticket on Oakdale once going 40 a couple years ago. The cop was sitting in his car waiting for me and as I approached he got out of his car and pointed to the side of the road. Not kidding. LOl!
Now THAT’s funny.
I’ve had the local cops just flash his blue lights to get me to slow down a bit. Doesn’t need anything else. And I just may drive like an old man, but I ever in a rush. At least on the 2 lanes. Interstate is a whole other matter
Straight outta Breaking Bad! 😉
Wordle in 4 using OILER — I guessed the wrong first letter or I would’ve had it in 3.
Connections perfect: yellow > green > blue > purple. Same as Barb, blue was so obvious I thought it was a red herring.
I tried to solve today’s purple Connection first, but looked at it slightly askance; I was looking at it as “things that go up and down”. I thought blue was too easy, but once I eliminated yellow, blue had to be what it was.
How are you able to tell what any one theme is before solving the puzzle? Is there a themes of the day list somewhere that I missing?
No, this is all in retrospect. The color is obviously only revealed when that connection is correctly solved.
Sitting in the living room, basking in the sun as I “recover” from my massage. Woe is me! Soon I am going to ballistic on the ITP Estate, cleaning and declutterring.
did the massage help? feeling any better?
It has helped some. Admittedly it wasn’t going to be a “cure” but a step in that direction. And, I’m now drinking a lovely coffee from the joint next door to it.
I was going to stop at Publix for a green pepper and a dozen eggs (Aldi had no eggs yesterday!) but decided against that.
I think Paulie was obfuscating the fact that he’s actually blissing out for a bit after his massage. 🙂
Saw through me again! Enjoy your session today.
Thank you, I need it for sure.
Probably a cute, age inappropriate barista, too.
Wrong!
I may have just liberated two Christmas trees from the curbsides of some on street neighbors.
OMG, I feel drugged from my massage. I wish I could just lay down and take a nap, but I have to present at 2:00. I’m so glad I went in. I was kindly and gently scolded about slumping my shoulders, because doing so is jacking up my body. I’ll work on it, old habits die really hard. And I like the coffeeshop next door, that’s my second time in there. This was my first time at this location of Tiny Village Massage, I’ve always gone to the space inside the gym in EAV, which is good, but you have to live with periodic clanging from the weight machines. The Reynoldstown location is far better, and the hot chai latte I secured is spot on!
just a little but of FYI –
(I love that they name everything nowadays)
Winter Storm Gerri, which is forecast to move across the Midwest and eastern parts of the U.S. today and throughout the weekend.
