Home, but not as relieved as I’d like to be.
Within ten minutes of arriving at the house I discovered some critter is trying to dig a hole to China in some of my planters, including one that is covered with netting! Some of the holes are in grow bags, so it doesn’t appear as of the critter is coming up from below ground. These holes are different from those dug by squirrels and too deep for cats, so I assuming it’s a rat, raccoon, or opossum? I saw that WLF caught 2.5″ of rain over the weekend, the filled buckets that I have in placed to catch rain also gave me a hint that it rained heavily, since they are filled, while I was gone. And for some reason both of my rhubarb plants died over the weekend. Farming can be hardโฆ
Inside the house I tried to flick off a speck of dirt from my leg, and it jumped. Now I have at least one goddamn flea in the house; one of my chores today is to buy some flea spray.
The drive home itself was fairly uneventful. The only near incident occurred on the one-lane on-ramp to I-275 in Tampa when the driver in a commercial van ahead of me inexplicably came to a complete stop. WTF people, learn to drive!
In the category of “Paulie’s Mysterious Health Problems” there is a new entry: both armpits have a rash, which I am hoping to chalk up to “heat rash” caused by excessive sweating in a hot and humid Florida. I can eliminate new soaps since I used the soap I brought with me. If they don’t clear up in a day or two I will be headed to a Doc In A Box for evaluation. Oh joy!
I solved todayโs Wordle in four attempts; my starter today was SPARK.
Tuesday Tale of the Tape: sparing myself the shame today.
First!

Only because I didnโt comment on my own post. ๐
Just barely!
where did this First thing start? I do remember, but don’t.
Itโs been happening for years on bulletin boards, YouTube, etc. For some reason people (not Ham) think they are special if they are the first to comment.
Ham is not special!! ๐
Whut?!

For a second I thought Ham got Wordle in 1.
Lol

We ain’t got no Wordle!
We don’t need to do no stinking Wordle!

Wordle in 4. Apparently, HOBBY broke a lot of streaks yesterday. A “guest columnist” reviews the daily Wordle and it broke her, so…
After a reasonably quiet day of work, Debbie informed me it was wash horses day!! yippee. Actually, they are good boys and mostly enjoy the attention. Now if Mickey would only keep out of the dirt and not roll around in it, he might stay clean. Phinney always looks clean because he’s already the color of dirt and Tanner doesn’t seem to get really dirty.
Maybe the mouse had a quiet night, as I never heard the dogs go into alert mode until I got up and they realized I was in the other bedroom. Sorry, honey.

Interesting. After failing Saturday I have been flailing every day.
I have post-TdF depression this morning. I should suit up and get out into WLF.
I might pick up the womens TdF in a couple days. While there are certainly a few riders that are head and shoulders above the rest, the racing seems to be more unpredictable, which is always fun!
Wordle in 2.
Atlanta today, Indianapolis tomorrow, Chicago Thursday, back to Atlanta on the last flight Friday, a friendโs bar mitzvah Saturday morning. Blur, blur, blur! I feel good about my presentation. A Power BI consulting gig fell out of the sky recently and helped me get up go speed on the platform. This gives me a new webinar topic to speak on as well.
The outline for my next book was approved without comment by the editorial board at one of my publishers. I need to hurry the hell up and finish the current book Iโm writing. Blur, blur, blur!
Two? Inconceivable!
It’s all in the intution. ๐
Impressive!
Thanks! The pitch came in slow and right over the plate the plate with 2 exact matches and a third partial match on the first try…
You’re just going to casually learn Power BI well enough to be able to tell other people about it? Wow!
I don’t even have any idea what Power BI is……..
It’s a Microsoft platform for creating interactive reports and charts that can be shared online, so it’s Excel-adjacent, and can pull data in from Excel.
It is seriously the only way I can will myself to learn about new technology as I get older. But then once I learn it I find lots of ways to monetize the newfound knowledge.
From what I understand Power BI is Excel formulas on steroids. Makes sense for David to be able to jump right in.
Spot on, Bob. The presentation aspects of of Power BI are Excel on steroids. Beyond that there’s still a ton you either have to do in Excel or in Power Query. Nonetheless, Power BI is currently a cool tool du jour.
I didn’t write about Power BI last year’s Excel book but I will be including a chapter on Power BI in this year’s Excel book. I’m also including a chapter on APIs, which are beyond my grasp at present, but I know a guy in Portugal who has agreed to get me up to speed, so…
Power Bi is my preferred reporting platform but instead Emory went with Interfolio. Interfolio is not as good on reporting but excellent for tenure and promotion, so I just live with it.
I have not heard of Interfolio. Tableau is the main competitor to Power BI that I’ve been aware of.
You wouldn’t. It specializes in higher education. It’s been doing academic admissions since the early 2000s, and within the past decade started offering more tools.
The library uses Tableau. I like that one, too.
Interfolio slapped a “faculty” label on their product and they’re charging about 1/6 of what Microsoft wants for Power BI, so yes, I see how it made the cut.
NERDS!!! ๐
exactly my thought
It’s a living… ๐
Due to my age I canโt see/hear that phrase without thinking of the bird in the Flintstones that uses its beak as a record needle.
More time travel. ๐
We have a 9am zoom meeting with a Fidelity guy to get information put together to get our wills & all that estate planning ppwk done. The guy helps to get it all together, then we can take it to an attorney & not pay a whole lot to get it all finalized.
We’ve been trying to get this done forever – so I decided let’s get on it. (it’s a benefit of having Fidelity do whatever they do for whatever percent they take from my account each year).
Debbie and I had that talk some months ago about our wills and assets. Between her nieces and nephew, and my nieces, that will split up so everyone can have a nice dinner out!! As long as there’s enough left over to cover the keg and a few pizzas, I’ll go out in style.
Estate planning is what Kevin’s firm does, so you all let me know if you need a lawyer.
Jenka –
I know at 1 point you gave us a name of a lawyer – I’d love it again.
(I think you said not Kevin, someone else)
We are going to use the Fidelity planning guide, to get most everything in order – so it won’t cost quite as much to make it all official.
And Steve – those horses aren’t worth millions? ๐
Kevin is a litigator, not an estate planner. You don’t want to hire Kevin, because if you need him, that means you are fighting with someone over money. Usually siblings fighting over a dead parent’s money.
Coincidentally he is currently in court. I’ll ask him for the name when he gets out.
you know, I think it would be fun to go watch Kevin in court…… I know, I’m weird.
Horses ARE worth millions… to Debbie!
Found paw prints at the bottom of some of the contained I use to catch rain water. Looks very much like a raccoon, or could be opossum.

we are seriously thinking about some critter cams – I do want to see what steals my tomatoes.
I am considering a trail camera.

Wascaly wabbits! It’s definitely wabbit season!
My boss is out of town today so I am actually working from home! Hallelujah!
fun, fun!!!!
(I just did the Fidelity zoom meeting – “while I was working”)
My current plan is to eventually get a really easy work-from-home gig. My boss is 70 and will be retiring relatively soon. I’ll stay on long enough to onboard the new dean. It takes a year to hire a dean. So maybe within 5 years I’ll be able to quit this job and take a remote data entry job or whatever at Emory. All I care about is the health insurance!
Kevin’s lawyer gig doesn’t get you some health insurance?
Yeah, from experience I can say that itโs not cheap to insure yourself.
Kevin’s firm’s health insurance is 4 times what mine is for less coverage. Not only that, but because he is an equity partner, his firm PAYS HIM what he would have cost to insure. So we pay $500 per month out of my paycheck for Emory insurance and his firm pays him $2000 per month to not be on their insurance. So yeah, we stick with Emory.
Yowza
In from WLF, and honestly have been for at least thirty minutes. About to eat lunch and take care of some external chores before getting my shit together to get some exercise cycling tonight.
