Actually it was the first time in years I saw the game, and at that I only was able to watch the first half. I have some regret not having my annual Super Bowl party yesterday, but I have to confess that yesterday was nearly stress-free.
February Already?
Whew, one month of 2009 gone. February is always a busy month for me and this year will be no different. For those who have read this space in the past six months you’ll know that I’ve not been running much, and next Sunday is the Red Top Rumble. My participation in the event is in limbo, not so much because of my lack of training, but because my knee doesn’t seem to be getting well. Work willing, I will be at the event regardless of my participation.
Take Me Out To The Puck Game
On Saturday I joined a contingent of hashers for a Gwinnett Gladiators minor league hockey game, in Suwannee! Suwannee? I know!
As this was the first minor league hockey game I’ve attended in years I was excited to go. I brought my camera gear expecting close, great look angle photographic opportunities. On that front I was rather disappointed. I don’t know if it was lack of sleep, but for some reason I settled into my seat and never did more than get up to participate in the evening’s Chuck-A-Puck event.
I have a feeling that I’ll give it another shot one day, especially if any of you out there has any Gladiator juice and can get me a pass into the photographer’s well — neither of the two primo wells were used on Saturday night.

At yesterday’s Chinese New Year celebration there were a lot of fireworks. Silly me, I didn’t realize just how fucking loud it would be — think Dick Dale at The EARL loud.
I sort of like this shot, but perhaps should have added a little more depth of field.
Sometimes All You Have To Do Is Ask
I spent the end of last week and much of Saturday re-listening to Randy Pausch’s The Last Lecture (I recommend the audiobook which is narrated by Pausch). The book is an inspirational tome for me as Pausch has now passed on and hearing him speak about his final days is bone chilling. It is no revelation that I deal with a lot of “little” shit in my life (much of which I am responsible, some of which is genetic) and this book reminds me that time is the only thing we really have. One of the stories Pausch recounts in this book is the about the power of asking.
Yesterday I went shopping at a major hardware store, let’s call it Highe’s. I was at Highte’s for a few things a new Dremel tool (which I nearly got one for free from someone who follows me on Twitter), some shelf brackets, and a piece of wood to use as a shelf. I found the Dremel tool and shelf brackets, but couldn’t find a piece of wood the right size. And then I found the cutting table, on which sat a piece of plywood which was exactly the right size! The only problem was that this was clearly a piece of scrap which would be impossible to sell. I decided to carry the piece of wood to the front and ask if I could buy it, or better yet have it for free since it was a mere scrap. Guess what, I got it for free. Had I not been reminded by Pausch that sometime all you have to do is ask, I may never had even tried.
So there you go. Just by asking I got a free piece of wood and nearly a free Dremel tool from a friend.
All Work, No Play Makes Paulie Dull. However, It Might Keep Him Employable
I am dedicating a lot of my life to work right now. I don’t mind, but it will surpress the “Fun Paulie” for a while. Know that I’m okay, just not available…. at least in a social time sort of way.

I’m glad you had a stress-free Sunday, but your Super Bowl party was sorely missed — the Super Bowl wasn’t nearly as much fun!
Depending how my life goes in 2009 I am sure that I will be itching to get the band back together, er, have the Super Bowl party again in 2010.
Strange Super Bowl for me, between not hashing and no party at your place I was actually sober at half time? What the heck?? I mean I remember watching the commericals and who played at half time. The image of Bruce’s crotch barreling at me on the big screen, is forever burned into my brain, I’m not sure if I will ever be able to forgive you. 😉
I have read accounts of The Boss’ crotch dominating the screen. I, having the firm belief that his best work ended many years ago, turned off the television prior to his taking the stage so I was not subjected to it.
It was strange being home alone with the Super Bowl on. Mind you it’s not strange being home alone, it was just strange last night.
the Boss played 3 oldies that we all know and you all should love, plus I guess his Obama song. I was watching, and that crotch slide into the camera was too funny. The party I was at was all “old” people, so we enjoyed the set.
Where was the Chinese New Year celebration? I”m going to guess, somewhere on Buford Hwy?
The celebration was indeed on Buford Highway. Do you know where Penang is? A coworker’s family owns the Hua Bihn grocery store in that plaza, that’s where the dragon dance and fireworks occurred.
Afterward I went with friends and had dim sum at Royal China. While we were there the dragon dancers showed up and gave another performance.
It was really cool, but really loud.
Most of the folks at the party had some Jersy connection, so they were all singing along…I never really ‘got’ Bruce.
I would suggest that there should be a dim sum Sunday in the near future. While the veggie options are limited (sorry Laura) I have always enjoyed it and it has been a long time since I’ve gone. (i.e. pre-Debbie) Let’s make that a really long time.
And Bruce sliding into the camera was pretty funny- he cracked himself up.

I could be down with a dim sum Sunday in the near future.
I just found out that they did some 3D thing with that half time show, so I’m guessing that slide to the camera was for the 3D effect. You could get the glasses free at Pepsi displays or something like that. A co-worker had the glasses, she said the 3D thing was over rated, but you could see a few things differently.
