Ever have your mind set on eating a certain, fairly common, cuisine and go to extreme lengths to eat it? Last night — Mexican.
Given the starting location of Peachtree and Collier Road, the order of failures was:
El Azteca on Peachtree, closed due to a plumbing problem
Pancho’s on Buford Highway, closed last night for some reason
El Potro on Buford Highway, temporarily closed for repairs
Las Margaritas on Cheshire Bridge, closed Mondays
Bonnie and I were finally able to satisfy our craving at El Ponce (née El Azteca) on Ponce. As they say in Mexico, ¡Oy Vey!.
Tuesday Tale of the Tape: 209.2 pounds (+4.4 from last week’s weight-in), a not-surprising, post-colonoscopy rebound.
Damn, that was rough. For the record my favorite Mexican restaurant in Atlanta is Jalisco in Peachtree Battle. I’ve been eating there almost 30 years. It’s to me what OK Cafe is to John. I don’t get there nearly as often as I used to, but last Saturday sat down in a booth there for lunch and just enjoyed the good vibes of anticipation.
I didn’t even know about Jalisco, would have saved a lot of driving…
I know this is blasphemy to some, but I just do not like Nuevo Laredo, or pretty much any other Mexican restaurant in Atlanta. Jalisco isn’t a place most folks stumble across, typically someone in the know takes them there. That’s how I first discovered it. I complimented them on Saturday for not changing anything over the decades, and asked them to keep it that way. The owner completely agreed.
I haven’t been to Nuevo Laredo in years, mostly because I generally won’t wait in lines to eat.
I really wish I had known about Jalisco, especially since I have been in that shopping center many times. I may have to make a trip there soon.
Related: Last night’s drive along Peachtree was literally a trip down memory lane for me. So many of the businesses I went to in that area are long, long gone.
Including but not limited to The Beer Mug, I presume.
Top of mind:
The Beer Mug (where I received my hash name)
Rocky’s Pizza
Huey’s
Mick’s
Disc Go Round (used CD store)
The Athlete’s Foot (where a running group used to meet)
Beer Mug is the only one I really ever frequented.
Now I want Mexican for breakfast!
Jalisco!
Yep, been going there many years, when Oxford Bookstore was in PB. Typically once/week.

I so miss Oxford Books. Pretty good odds that we’ve been in that restaurant at the same time at some point. One day I saw Clark Howard eating there.
we ran into Clark Howard at Hardee’s on Delk Rd once………
Good morning, remember me? It was a long 10 days at the Highland games but we survived a slightly damp Saturday and a gorgeous Sunday and got it all back in the box by 330 yesterday afternoon.
Sunday night was a bit of a problem as we didn’t have as many folks tearing down as usual and we’re not sure why. Last year was the first year we worked after our traditional pizza dinner because of the impending monsoon that was going to happen on Monday. This year we had to go back out because of the shortage of bodies . We were finally heading home at 11:45 PM.
The gate Saturday was not bad considering the weather and the gate Sunday looked like it was made up some of the shortage but I’m sure we were down overall. I haven’t seen a final number yet.
catching up on chores today and will be back in the office tomorrow

Sorry I couldn’t make it out to the games, Steve. Full weekend.
There was neat stuff all weekend long. We are just a small fish in a big pond, and we know it.
We went see Crip Teaser’s new condo in Smyrna – she is having trouble getting her cable/internet hooked up, and the tech had told her she needed an electrician to do some work (she has no grounded wiring). Allan knows a little about that sort of thing, so we went over to advise, before she spent a bunch of needless money. She has grounded wiring, so not really sure what that tech was talking about. Allan has an idea to fix the problem that really isn’t there, and will go back over to her place Wednesday. We also told her to request an experienced tech, as that other guy we don’t think knew what he was doing.
THEN – we stopped at El Ranchero on the way home – 1st Mexican place, they were open…….
