I’ve Got Junk In My Trunk

On (late) Saturday morning I heaved a bunch of stuff into the Jackmobile and drove up to Lake Hartwell for a relaxing day of beer drinking, cooking, and wading in a vanishing lake. I am proud to say that I was successful at accomplishing all three events. I was even more pleased on Sunday morning when I heard a couple of hashers praising the andouille grit cakes as well as the shrimp sauce that I assembled for them. The hashers had no idea that I had made them so I know that they were being sincere.

Bohemian Like Me
Perhaps the best discovery this weekend is that I found a comfortable way to sleep in my car. This is the third year that I’ve gone to the Lake Hartwell campout, and it’s also the third year that I’ve gone up on Saturday instead of Friday night. I don’t know about you, but I find it rather silly to erect a tent for one night’s rest. In the past I have struggled to sleep in the Jackmobile… but no more! This weekend I discovered that if I drop the rear seats I can extend my lower torso into the trunk, lay flat, and get a good night’s sleep. Hooray for being 5’9″!!! Two slight improvements will make my future travel sleeping experiences even better. First, I won’t pack so much crap into my trunk (including a 10″ chef’s knife which I miraculously avoided all night long). Second, I’ll bring my Therm-a-Rest to smooth out some of the bumps.

I’ve already Twittered about how much this discovery has pleased me. It’s crazy, but the fact that I can sleep a night or two in my car opens a huge volume of travel opportunities to me, without having to buy a SUV. Fear not, I’m in no state of mind to start following Phish or Widespread Panic around the country, but I can see myself doing some really bizarre trips if Life starts heading in an uncertain direction. Consider my a modern-day, not-so-hip Jack Kerouac.

I’ve finally decided for which candidate I will vote this November. He is loyal, obedient, and promises four years of no wars through regular stick and ball retrieving. His name is Andy.
Andy, Dog Of Ideas
Those of you who hash in Atlanta have probably met Andy on an occasion or two. Andy breaks the rule of “Never work with animals or children.” When I missed my first shot Darren (aka “Gentri”, aka “Andy’s food provider”) commanded him to stay, which Andy did.

J-E-T-S, Suck! Suck! Suck!
I don’t know how many people know this, but East Atlanta’s The Midway Pub has begrudgingly turned themselves into a nifty little sports bar. Yesterday they had five televisions tuned to different games and there were fans of about nine different teams in attendance.

For weeks the plan was to meet up for the Patriots v. Jets game for some quality beer and trash talking. Fortunately for me, one of the instigators of this gathering — a dyed-in-the-wool Patriots fan — didn’t make it to the bar. Instead I met a fellow Jets fan and drowned my sorrows with some quality beer (a Lagunitas Censored, an Avery 15, a Smithwick’s, and two Fire Rock Pale Ales). Yes, I walked to the bar.

I’m Getting Framed, Well At Least Canvassed
Last night I returned home from Midway Pub and placed my first print order from Mpix. I’ve placed an order to have my “Flowers In The Desert” photo
Flowers In The Desert
printed on a 16″x24″ stretched canvas. With shipping the cost of my experiment will only be $65, and if it comes out nicely I’ll finally have one of my photos hanging on my walls. I’m kinda excited to see how this turns out.

Rumors Of The East Atlanta Deadbeat Dads Having Talent Have Been Greatly Exaggerated
Holy crap my team blows this year. It’s only two weeks into the season and the best thing that has happened so far is that hurricane Ike has forced the postponement of the Baltimore Ravens v. Houston Texans game (I have the Ravens’ defense as my starting defense). Seriously, things are bad. Why did the auto-draft inflict such pain upon me? Larry Johnson, Chad Johnson? They are both so two years ago. I might have a better team if I started Magic Johnson! My starting quarterback is Matt Hassleback, who scored a whopping five points yesterday…. in a game in which his team scored thirty real points! Hassleback managed to pepper his zero-touchdown-pass day with two interceptions. I might have more free time this Fall than I had imagined.

Let me know how that picture turns out. I would love to have one of mine pics on the wall also. However, with the exception of a few from Bethel, I think yours might be a better options.

I almost dropped by the Midway on my way to watch Sam but thought better of it. Nothing like the babysitter showing up drunk. I got to meet lil’ Bea last night. Yep, she looks like a baby.

Hartwell looks like fun but I guess it worked out for the best I didn’t go.

  2. I will let you know when it comes in if you’d like to take a look at it.

I saw photos of Kay — who, if she is reading the blog still, “CONGRATULATIONS Kay!”

Hartwell was Hartwell. However, the sad thing was that Sanitary was not in attendance because apparently Daisy is not well.

  3. Martha says:

Oh no, I know awhile back Daisy was having some issues. It is so hard when they get older. I’ll drop Sani a note…thanks for letting me know.

I thought the mosaic of all the dumpsters might be interesting…I’ll have to play with it a little more though.

  4. Barb says:

wow – Sani didn’t make it? I hope Daisy is okay.

As for fantasy football – I guess there is no chance of trading players?

  5. I’ve not heard an update on Daisy. Randy, if you read this today, do you know anything?

My team is so bad that I really don’t have much to use for trade bait. 🙁

  6. Gentri says:

Andy for President! World peace through stick and ball retrieving!! LOL, very funny!

Daisy was having some kidney issues, but all should be well as per Sani (my info was from Friday around 10pm, so much may have happened however). Hartwell was a good time, as usual, and Sat night got very funny late. Yes, Paulie, your entree WAS the yummiest item that appeared on the table! I’m gonna need that recipe, bub, so just hand it over nice and quietly… plus I’ll make sure that the future President elect gets a dog biscuit, to keep him happy and in the race! 😉

I’d also like to see the “canvas” when if arrives. I’ve got two B&W “tree” photos I took over 20 years ago that hang on my walls… it is very cool to get a compliment on them and then get to go “yeah, I took those”!

  7. 1) I will announce when the canvas arrives so that anyone who wants to take a look can.

    2) There is a link to Emeril Lagasse’s recipe in Friday’s blog. I followed it almost to a “tee”.

    3) I missed much of late Saturday night. I was too busy inventing the Paulie Traveling IncubatorTM.

We can make it a proper art showing…great excuse to eat and drink (Like we really need another one).

I just email Sani, she is out of the office today so I don’t have any news concerning Daisy.

  9. RanLiCoop says:

Unfortunately, Mom doesn’t have much more information right now than what you guys have heard. Daisy is experiencing kidney failure, but Sani is administering fluids subcutaneously and Daisy seems to be responding fairly well to that. She didn’t eat for a couple of days, but is now chowing on chicken, rice and steak. I believe they’ll be doing an ultrasound in the next day or two to investigate an abdominal mass felt by the vet. Once she sees what’s on the ultrasound, they should have a better idea on a path forward.

  10. Gentri says:

We will keep our fingers crossed for Daisy! That’s tough not knowing….

  11. Martha says:

I just heard from Sani and yes Daisy will be going in for an ultrasound tomorrow but seems to be feeling better right now.

This is bring back sad memories 🙁

Paulie, on a completly different topic…someone is gunning for your ‘slicing your finger off super power’… someone (wont name names) got new knives for his birthday, his first attempt at using the 8 in chefs knife was Friday night, well into our second bottle of wine and a few shots of rum…I think you can see where I’m going with this.

  12. He may have my title as “Master Of All He Slices Off.”

  13. Martha says:

Well after mt. biking with Barb yesterday I get to keep my title of “Lady of the Multi-Colored Ass Bruise”

  14. As far as I’m concerned you are more than welcome to retain that title because I certainly don’t want it.
