I don’t mind admitting that I can be a scaredy cat sometimes. Last night drove all the way to Meltons to ride, and on my drive a light rain fell. When I arrived at Meltons the roads were wet, and the humidity was brutal. And then, I saw that there was a severe thunderstorm watch from 6:00-11:00, at which time I decided to get back into my car and drive home.
Do you know the difference between a “Watch” and a “Warning”? Because they both start with a “W” I confuse them all the time. According to Weather Works:
A WATCH means that the potential exists for the development of severe thunderstorms or tornadoes, depending upon the specific type of watch issued.
A WARNING, on the other hand, requires more immediate action and should be taken seriously.
Turns out that it didn’t rain, as reported by those who rode.
I have just started reading a book called “Station Eleven”. Published in 2014, early in the book the plot contains a highly-infectious flu called “Georgia Flu” (the country, not our state) which causes an epidemic. It may be still too soon out of our own pandemic for me to continue reading this book.
Wordle: six, my starter was STORM
Connections: perfect, Blue > Green > Purple > Yellow
Wordle in 5 after throwing in a word for clarification.
A friend reported the storm line in Cleveland last night and that same storm line hit us about 10:00. The problem I see riding in the rain is you will be even more invisible to drivers and certainly not expected.
I thought I made a change to the car to prevent it from stopping a half mile (slight exaggeration) from the car ahead. It was still doing it on the drive in. The fight continues.
I believe I was just ahead of the VP coming into town. As I was passing the airport, there were 6 GSP riding shoulder to shoulder north, beginning to slow traffic. Since she spoke at GSU, I suppose Dobbins would have been a bit much.

I have not mastered my cruise control, but I so rarely use it – that could be why.
The auto braking feature sometimes works when we aren’t even that close to the car ahead of us – or when you change lanes without signaling – that drives Allan nuts.
I haven’t gotten my phone to pair to the bluetooth of my car – but I have the Apple Car Play working -so I haven’t worried about it.
Wordle in 4 starting with QUICK. Connections: b, g, y, p. Of course we would get blue first. :). I had to take a hint to get me started on Strands.
Had a lovely lunch yesterday with Barb and Allan. Barb wanted to get caught up on RagBrai. I’m sure there was a lot I missed. Very sticky, hot, humid run last night up and over Kennesaw Mountain. The drive home was a bit crazy as the winds were brutal and debris everywhere. Tonight is West Stride’s 16th birthday party.
Did a short run this morning. A lot of big branches and such on the roads but no trees down.
lunch was fun – glad we were able to meet up.
the weather I guess was pretty interesting here at the house – there are lots of little branches, leaves etc. all over the place. We really noticed it because I just cut the grass yesterday, and it all looked so nice.
We went to a solar informational meeting at Cobb EMC yesterday – I did learn a lot. I think we have too many trees to be able to really think about solar, but there is some info on their website that I think we can get an idea if it could ever work. They did say its takes 10+ years to break even.
After the meeting we stopped at the American Legion – I finally got my door fob – they keep the door locked as it is a private club. And of course had a very cold beer.
This morning the garage fridge & freezer are finally cold again – time to restock it. The one good thing about emptying it all out – it was dirtier than we thought – so it is all nice and clean now.
Are you planning to live in your house for more than ten more years? I am planning a one-floor condo by the time I’m 60 (Kevin will be 67).
yes- we will not ever be moving – that’s why I wanted to learn a little more about it. Our house is a ranch, and the only reason to go down into the basement is to the better wine, high end booze, pool table & hot tub. 😉
they also said – definitely have a good (recent) roof, as it costs a lot to take the panels off to get a new roof.
And now that it’s paid off, your house costs will be only taxes, maintenance, and insurance.
My other reason is that I don’t want to deal with the continuous maintenance required for a whole house. It would be nice for the condo company to take care of everything when I retire.
Ten years? Wow. I have considered getting solar installed when I put on a new roof, but at 59 I don’t know if it’s worth it, the solar, not the roof.
My co-worker Ellen reports that she had a great time at RAGBRAI. She says she saw the bus from afar but never got close.
We had planned to go to Iberian Pig for dinner but decided that was too heavy so we went for sushi instead. Finn has been at his mom’s for 2.5 weeks and we get him today. He starts school tomorrow.
Pity she didn’t come up to say hello.
In from a morning of puttering in WLF. I did mostly maintenance today, cleanup of dying plants, moving water into rain barrels, and transplanting seedlings into larger pots. I hope that my winter starter plants take off soon, they are a bit leggy.
It’s only 10am and I can’t stop thinking about lunch!
We just got the fridge & freezer refilled – took all night to get the freezer back to it proper freezing temp.
All the frozen stuff was starting thaw just a little – so glad it all done.
It is all reorganized – now we know what we have – I probably should have written down what’s in there – that that’s being way too organized for me.
I don’t care how good the deals are – no buying anything for the freexer until we cook some of this stuff.
One time I made a list of what was in the fridge and freezer at the cabin and it became immediately wrong when we added things and ate some things. It was a useless endeavor because it was impossible to keep up with.
Yeah, not even a data nerd like myself is willing to keep a food inventory.
Ugh, in preparing my lunch I touched my nose after cutting a hot pepper, but before I thoroughly washed my hands. Owie!
ooopsie
Working from home alone today, it is still weird to not have a dog sleeping under my desk. It is getting more normal but still weird.
Crazy strong storm last night, I see on Facebook that some friends have trees down and house damage.
Swapped wheels on my bike last night so now I’m ready for some gravel riding. It is also good for adventure riding around Roswell/Alpharetta (with beer stops 🙂 )
Gonna drag out the camper today and start cleaning/prepping for the weekend. Going to a new spot in Anderson SC on lake Hartwell. It is not far from Twin Lakes but on the East side of I-85. Looking forward to some Clemson trails and lake paddling.
Bummer about the storm and your friends’ house.
Have you removed the plastic rim tape from your road wheels yet? I have a very slow leak in my rear tube. This weekend I think I will patch the tube and find out why my tubes keep puncturing.
Not yet but I have time, those wheels will be off all winter with the gravel wheels on. I’ll address it at some point (or get Allan to help me)
All winter?!?! Good gravy! 🙂
Bob – where are you camping? a ‘hooligan outing?
We are going to Springfield campground, Twin Lakes was sold out when we decided to go. It is the last weekend before school starts so just doing a family campout.
The BRAG July newsletter was just sent out, and no mention of RAGBRAI? Perhaps next month… lol
I guess I need to start getting mentally ready for the BRAG trip to Europe in three weeks.
I have anxiety about this Europe trip.
Trying to pick hotels is the hardest – so many conflicting reviews (since I’m not looking at the super pricy places)
Trying to figure out what clothes I want to take – do I have the right stuff? Do I need to buy anything?
Etc, etc. etc.
I know it will all be fine – but still………
I have no anxiety, I just need to start concentrating on it.
When I did a multi-day ride in Germany I brought sneakers, shorts, technical shorts, and a light rain jacket for the rides. I will do the same this time. I’m sure you have everything you need.
As for hotels, in my past European travels I tended to pick places within comfortable walking distance to train stations I was using for day travel. I am incredibly low maintenance, so a private bath/toilet, and air conditioning is about all I need.
We’ll discuss tomorrow over lunch and feel better about things afterward.
I know, I know, I still think about it all too much.
Allan might be able to meet us, maybe – he said he won’t know until tomorrow morning how the day is going to shape up
My first ski trip to Europe, we were dead tired by the time we got to Bad Gastein and I was wondering where the hotel was- then I looked at the address and had picked it based on that- Bohnhofstrasse !! (train station street). And it was right across the street.
yeah – that sounds so good in theory -but anymore, those are so jacked up in prices.
Actually – the hotel I got in Amsterdam for the day we arrive is in the museum district (I guess) so we will have fun with maybe 2 of the 3 from the airport – trains/trams/buses ?
Back from a run to Kroger to get dinner for tonight. With the exception of eggs, bread, or milk, I am set food wise until I return home from Europe in September.
