Today is the first of May, so as we all know, “outdoor fucking starts today” 🙄 (see also: Jonathan Coulton’s song “First of May”).

Today is also a National Holiday in Germany known as Wandertag.

As for me, here is what I was referring to yesterday…

“Every Day in May”
While this isn’t a revelation, my goal this month is to do the following every day in May:
– (real) exercise at least thirty minutes.
– spend at least two hours on “professional self-improvement” (writing code, reading, books, etc). My goal is to have at least two iOS apps in my professional portfolio as I continue to attempt to remain employable.
– spend at least thirty minutes, hopefully at least an hour, studying German. My goal is to register for, and then pass, the B1-level (im currently finishing up the four quarters on the B2 level) proficiency test this Fall.
– drink at least one beer 🙂

From where will I make up this 3.5 hours daily? Good question. Since it’s no longer cold I will be tempted to stay in bed less than when it is cold. I will also attempt to limit the amount of time I spend, no waste, by being idle or doing things mindlessly.

Wish me luck, or more importantly, please hold me to this.

Haha I was going to text you that song this morning. 😁 It’s going to be in my head all day.

Some lofty goals you’ve got there my friend, but since I don’t really know how you spend your free time, I guess I can’t really speak to it. However, I know you can do it because May will be a mostly Bonnie-free month! 😢😢😢 Without me around to corrupt you, you should have more time to get shit done. 😁😁😁

    • Boo! Hiss!

I’m just envious of your trip and will miss my hashing partner for (yet another) month. 😢 Though given that I will be out of town for the next Black Sheep I may not have to sit on the ice because I am there without you. 🙄

This feels a bit like going from zero to 120, never mind 60. Instead of setting yourself up to do something unsustainable like allot 3.5 hours *every day*, why not set a number of hours for the month for these activities. Life doesn’t lend itself to what you’re proposing. Some days you’re just not gonna feel it. Some days you will and will be able to accomplish more. Embrace imperfection.

    • I have embraced imperfection for nearly 54 years… Besides, many of these have been underway for awhile so it’s like 60 to 120, I am just announcing this in public today. A major stumbling block may be when I am out of town doing other things. I will allow myself a pass if I’ll or injured, of course.

      • ITP Lurker says:

My observation is it feels like you constantly swing for the fences, rather than accepting base hits. I say that as someone who has constantly swung for the fences, and constantly whapped myself in the head with my own bat. I’m totally good with incremental progress now, and actually I’m making more headway on more fronts than ever in my life. YMMV.

Another key to my progress is being kind to myself. Setting up 3.5 hours of daily mandatory activities feels to me like “the beatings will continue until morale improves.” The more that I ease up on myself, the better I’m able to get out of my own way and actually accomplish something.

Your May goals, while admirable, are possibly…too ambitious.

Unless, of course, the whole point is to…fail.
Tragic hero, insurmountable odds, blah, blah, blah.
    Think about it.

Give your goals a shot today, and see how it goes.
Report back in this space tomorrow, then we can discuss further.
    (I hope you make it.)

BTW: “John makes Mac talk too…like ITP.” <– long story.
(I have recently written two (trivial) iOS APPS using Swift in XCode. Boo yah.)

Everybody make it a nice day es 73 de JG/HamWIthCam

Lofty goals, indeed. I like Lurker’s idea of setting a monthlong total goal, and not plan to fail on a daily basis. I won’t go as far as you to publicize my goals, but will say I hope to get out on my bike(s) more this month.

We just pulled the trigger on a trip to the NE in late July. Debbie will be the tourguide, as she has some experience in the area and I have nada. Can’t beat the midweek airfare- on Delta even.

Bonnie, where are you off to?

    • Barb says:

      a trip to Nebraska? why?????
that’s like a trip to Iowa, but worse? hahahahahaha

      • Barb says:

I actually think he meant the northeast US, but it was still more fun to think he is going to Nebraska.
(and – being in transportation – I know my state abbreviations.) Or maybe it was my superior education in Iowa, we did have map skills class. I assume they don’t have that class now, as the people I work with have no idea where anything is.

    • Funny, I read “NE” as “Northeast / New England”. Yes, I was educated in this country, why do you ask? 🙂

    • Bonnie says:

      Steve: Deutschland and Osterreich.

  5. Barb says:

I like the exercise goals – but I guess if you miss a day because something ‘came up”, you just have to add 30 minutes to another day?
I MUST ride my bike more……. please make me.

temporary crown is installed – next week I get the permanent one.
Damn that shit is expensive, even with insurance. I’m seriously going to Mexico for the next one.

Plumber#2 comes today to get a look see to get us an estimate – plumber#1 that came by Monday still hasn’t sent over his amount (note to self- have Allan call him). Plumber#3 is coming tomorrow.
We have quite a list of things to do, so figured 3 estimates would be a good number.
(all 3 were recommended by other hashers that know these guys are good)

    • Bonnie says:

Barb: If I wasn’t mostly sequestered or traveling this month, I would help make you ride! Maybe we can plan some June rides. 🙂

  6. Steve says:

New England, North East… not NEbraska! Although there are some fun things to do in Nebraska- the SAC Museum at Offitt AFB between Omaha and Lincoln is a good one.
