Deep sorrow yesterday as the news of Rat’s Ass’s death on Saturday spread through the hashing community. I was fortunate to know him for awhile, his friendship will be missed.
It doesn’t seem possible that nearly ten years have passed since I took this photo of Niplets (left) and Rat’s Ass (right) trying to figure out how they were going to get their pig cooked at the Black Rock Mountain hash campout in the spring of 2008.
I know we will be reaching an age where we start losing friends but dammit, this is too soon! Gary was one of the first hashers I met and one of the nicest people I had the fortune of knowing. Godspeed Rats Ass, say hello to Wilma for us.
Gary was only one or two years older than me, so I agree this came far too soon.
I was sure it was some sort of twisted hoax when I read about it yesterday. I can’t say I knew him well at all, but he was always friendly and seemed like a very likable sort. Curious to know his cause of death. Apparently, his health issues were known to some- he always seemed quite fit as far as I knew.
On on, Rat’s Ass. Lay true trail for us to follow. Say hello to Wilma and Cooler Killer.

And for your reading Paulie:

All, my condolences on your loss.
Steve, thank you for the link. I too have many defenses that have long outlived their usefulness. Awareness is the first step.
Thought I had commented earlier, I think I forgot to hit send.
Yes, Gary’s death hit both of us hard, as far as we knew, he was as healthy as we are.
Florida is sunny, nice & breezy, about 80 degrees. This doesn’t suck.
I knew he was having some health issues, but I didn’t realize how serious they seemed to be.
Not enough hills. Have fun!
And Paulie, you probably heard- there will be a story telling/raise a glass tonight at George’s for RA.
Yeah, I think I will be making a short appearance. I have many things that have to get done tonight since they didn’t get done yesterday.
Give Betsy a hug for me. I’m sure she’s a puddle.
Will do. A small group of us gathered at her house yesterday – many tears were shed.
