Sleep, What A Concept

After confirming my suspicion that I was going to skip the iOS Developers meetup I coerced myself into going over to Taco Mac for some dinner and a few beers. My plan worked even better than I imagined (not what you might be thinking) because I also talked myself out of stopping at the grocery store on the way home, chatted with my mother for a while on the phone, and them promptly passed out some time shortly after 9:30pm. Needless to say I was a little more chipper this morning when the alarm went off at 5:00am, and even though it was noticeably chilly inside the ITP Estate I managed to rally my ass out the door by 6:15am. Now if I could have only convinced myself to get some exercise this morning…

My back is a little better today, though it still aches some.

A Rare Bit Of Politics
Many people and companies I respect are blackening-out their logos and websites today in order to fight the Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA) and Protect IP Act (PIPA). In a land that supposedly values “Free Speech” I am appalled at the companies who are using the Government (through financial support most likely) in order to “stop piracy.” In my opinion this “War on Piracy” will have as much success as the wars “on Drugs” and “on Terrorists” which is to say, none, other than to waste time and money and punishing the innocent.

I Have A New “RealiTV” Guilty Pleasure
This past weekend I started watching the episodes of “Rocco’s Dinner Party” (whose Bravo TV link inexplicably takes you to Season 1 of “Shear Genius”) that I’ve had stored on my Dish Network-brand DVR since recording them last summer. The show’s formula doesn’t break any new ground…

  • Three chefs arrive and prepare their signature dish
  • One chef is immediately eliminated
  • The remaining two chefs prepare a dinner party for Rocco DiSpirito and six dinner guests
  • During the preparation of the dinner party a “twist” is introduced to fuck with the chefs
  • A winner is declared, and that winner takes home a check for $20,000 (pre-taxes)

DiSpirito has been a TV chef for some time. I first remember DiSpirito being a part of a Food Network series called “Melting Pot” (which also featured wonderfully younger versions of Padma Lakshmi and Michael Simon) before going onto the painful RealiTV show called “The Restaurant” which chronicled the botched attempt to open an italian restaurant in Manhattan.

Looking Forward To Top Chef Tonight
I will be stopping at Kroger tonight to pick up the fixings for tonight’s dinner, as well as tomorrow’s lunch.

Tonight I’ll be roasting a chicken (assuming I can buy a bird which is not completely frozen), and am contemplating making some cheesy mashed cauliflower (never done this before). Because of Top Chef’s late start I should have ample time to shop and get home with enough time to whip up a delicious dinner. Roasting a chicken will also help heat up the ITP Estate through the use of my ancient, inefficient oven.

Tomorrow I’ll be crockpotting some beef stew for a communal lunch at work. I’ve been trying to get a handful of my coworkers to buy into this concept of a weekly, semi-monthly, or monthly communal lunch in which one person brings in the main course and others can bring in salad/sides/dessert. I’m trying to reduce some costs while raising the bar on the quality of food that I put into my body.

“I coerced myself into going over to Taco Mac for some dinner and a few beers.” Coerced? yeah right………

We had leftover red snapper from dinner saturday night, so we made fish tacos out of it. Damn tastiest fish tacos ever. That fish is too expensive to do it often, but if we ever have leftovers of it again, we will definitely so more tacos.

Justified started back up last night, I love that show. You should start from the very beginning with the DVDs, I think this is season 3 or 4, If you like a crazy show about a crazy US Marshall in Kentucky where there is lots of illegal activity with lots of serious southern accents, this is the show for you.

  2. Believe it or not, it was a struggle last night. “My” Taco Mac has lost most of the waitresses I like, and it was mostly because I was hungry that I caved. Sure, I could have gone elsewhere but in the end I went to Taco Mac. My waitress last night was cute, but there is still something (or many things) missing from the Taco Mac experience I built up last year.

I make mashed cauliflower all the time; it’s quite tasty and so good for you! My favorite thing to do is to make it, scoop it into halved bell peppers, sprinkle with cheese and bake it all up golden brown. Nom nom nom. You definitely will want to season the cauliflower as you’re baking (garlic, pepper, whatever you like), otherwise it doesn’t have much flavor.

And yay! “Pancakes Eaten” is now on the list! (see? I actually read all this!) 🙂

  4. Steve says:

I’m with Barb- Coerced is never likely when TM is involved.

It was a sufferfest kind of night for me. Damn that thing kicks my a$$.. but good for me, I’m sure.

  5. Barb says:

I went to yoga – no suffering, but it is supposedly good for me.

  6. Stacy Fox says:

I drank beers with an old hashing buddy. I win!

  7. I’ve been meaning to go to yoga with my non-hashing ITP-Reader friend Stacy, but we’ve yet to settle on a date/time during which we are both available.

  8. Barb says:

this place I go is at the Marietta Square, just a little out of your way 😉 but the class I like (because it is “easier” with long stretches for about 5 minutes each) starts at 7:30pm Tuesday & Thursday. I think it is helping strengthen my back, and I’m really feeling a little less tight because of it.

  9. Jenka says:

Paulie, you could always go to my yoga class, Wednesday nights at 6:30 pm at ABS (in the Morelli’s development above Spoon). It’s an all-levels class and only costs $5!

The number of pancakes eaten will be directly proportional to your weight. There are very few things that are worse to eat than pancakes. They’re on my Top 10 Foods I’m Never, Ever Allowed to Eat Under Any Circumstances list. *Sigh*

  10. Stacy Fox says:

Jenka: curious to know what the others are!

  11. You sure that it’s just not the syrup Jenka? 🙂

I may try that yoga once Wednesday is no longer dedicated to Top Chef viewing. Thanks!

Barb, I can’t keep going OTP for things — I’ve a reputation to uphold.

  12. Jenka says:

Pancakes, milkshakes, bagels, cake (although I generally submit on birthdays), cookies, pasta, full-calorie soda. I can’t think of the others right now, but it’ll come to me.

The Foods I Still Eat But Should Be On the Never, Ever List list includes: pita chips, french fries/tater tots, diet soda, chocolate, granola. Okay, I’ll admit that sometimes I eat cookies. Heh.

  13. Barb says:

Paulie – you should go to Jenka’s class, price is much better than my place (and just a tad bit closer).

hey – I don’t see french toast on the never eat list – yippie!
