Meat Versus Alcohol

Today’s quick blog is different than most. After spending an hour on I-285 to get to work after voting at 7:05am (btw, I was the first one to vote at my voting place today!) I’m really behind it already so I don’t have the time to describe Saturday’s failure, or about the time I spent at Outback last night drinking with my boss.

Meat v. Alcohol

Meat: Enjoyed by many, but some people do not consume it for various personal or religious reasons.

Meat: Consumed in moderation is not necessarily unhealthy. When over-consumed serious health-related risks can occur.

Meat: With proper planning you need never run out of it at your house.

Meat: Forcing people to drive to a restaurant in order to consume it on Sundays significantly increases the risk of car-related accidents.

Meat: Delicious on pizza.
Alcohol: Not so delicious on pizza, but it is delicious with pizza.

Why is it legal to buy meat seven days a week in Georgia, but not alcohol? It’s not about the substance, it’s about the privilege. Keep in mind that nobody is going to force you to open your package stores on Sundays, or force you to buy alcohol on Sundays, or force you to drink on Sundays. It’s all about choice!

Today is Election Day. If your city is offering you the opportunity to allow Sunday alcohol sales, and you feel that adults should have the privilege to enter a package store or supermarket on Sunday (after 12:30pm? errrr!) then I urge you to go out and cast a vote today. Hell, even if you are against Sunday alcohol sales you should go out and vote — especially if you are trying to get me to move away from Georgia. 😉

And, if you are telling me that eating meat is not a vice in the way that drinking alcohol is, substitute “cigarettes” for “meat” and many of the arguments/observations above are still true.

Cheers!

My vote was cast in Roswell this morning.

  2. Steve says:

If only I had a chance to vote for Sunday sales I would, but alas, greater metropolitan Moreland only has one store and I don’t believe it sells beer anyway. Now if you live in Newnan or Senoia, you can vote for Sunday sales.

When these measures pass, what will be the next step? Do the politicians have to get involved again?

  3. I’m not sure what the next step is, or when stores would be allowed to sell on Sunday (July 1st is when most new laws take effect).

  4. Barb says:

I don’t even know if I get to vote on Sunday Sales in Cobb county – but I will be stopping by to find out after work.

  5. Jenka says:

I forgot that I was supposed to vote until halfway to work this morning! Will have to cut out early this evening to make it before the polls close. I wonder what time Ormewood Presby closes? Martha?

  6. I think as long as you are in line by 7:00pm you are guaranteed to vote. Unfortunately I don’t think turnout will be high. I showed up ten minutes prior to the start of voting and was number two in line. The only reason I voted first at my precinct was because the voting “officials” had a lot of difficulty with their machinery and my form was processed before the other guy’s.

  7. bets says:

Voted. Ormewood Presby was pretty deserted. But I just love being involved in the civic process and making my voice heard on meaningful matters that affect our way of life. FREEDOM!!!!

Paulie–I don’t know what “Saturday’s failure” was, but I’m glad you don’t have time to write about it. Again, my well-intentioned advice is to write about Saturday’s success, as I’m sure there might have been one or two of them. And lose the failure word, unless you’re describing a power failure.

  8. “Saturday’s failure” was my inability to go to a birthday party because I don’t mingle well when I don’t know a lot of people at a party.

  9. Stacy Fox says:

    cigarettes on a pizza? ewwwww.

heehee – first thing that popped to mind. awesome blog, btw!

  10. Martha says:

Barb, looks like Cobb voters may have to wait until March. I really don’t see it as being much of a fight in Atlanta.

And yes, Paulie is correct, as long as you are in line by 7 you can vote. I didn’t make it this morning, I may use it as a excuse to take Nibbles on a walk this evening.

Have I mentioned in the past 5 minutes, I hate my job??

  11. Jenka says:

Thanks, Paulie and Martha! I’ll have to leave campus early, but it’s worth it for the ability to booze it up at home on Sundays.

Martha, I thought your job would settle down at some point. Has that not happened?

  12. Stacy Fox says:

Oh no! 🙁 Martha, what’s going on with your job?

  13. Barb says:

Martha – I hate mine too – but it will be better once Christmas crap is done shipping. I hate people that shop right now too.
