I’m So Out Of Practice

Shoveling snow and ice. To what did you think I was referring?

A Shoveling I Will Go
I’ve yet to get cabin fever. However that’s probably because I have been able to make my way up to a mile or so away from my house and interact with friends on each day.

Yesterday I worked from home and at one point had so much pent-up frustration about everything going on that I needed to go outside and “do something.” Beneath the Florida Gators hoodie beat the heart of a native New Yorker. With reckless abandoned I started pushing my flat-blade shovel beneath the thin layer of ice and hurling the chunks created from the driveway. It took somewhere in the neighborhood of a half an hour for me to completely clear my driveway (which is more work than I do to keep the driveway clean under pleasant conditions) and I felt satisfied.

“A cleared driveway is worth a three-mile run for me today.” I believe I exclaimed loudly in between panting breaths as I wiped the sweat from by brow.

The ill affect of my shoveling began last night. It’s readily apparent that whatever lower back muscle(s) necessary for bending down, shoveling snow/ice, and hurling it to the side are not often used by yours truly. My lower back began hurting last night and still hurts today.

It’d been nearly thirty years since I last shoveled a driveway. I guess I was better prepared back then.

ITP Flickr Pic
I remember a time where travel was unrestricted. A time where, while cold, one could go outside without having to wonder if his/her destination was open.
Hanging In The Balance
For me the last time that happened was Saturday, the day on which I took this photo of a lightbulb.

It Was Like The Kidpocalypse Had Arrived
I ate dinner at The Shed in Glenwood Park last night. Post-shoveling I hopped into the Jackmobile and did a test drive to see if driving or walking would be my mode of transportation last night (driving won out). When I arrived at the restaurant it was as if a Chuck-E-Cheese had loaded everyone up into a U-Haul and shipped them all to The Shed. At first I was mortified, and the I threw my hands up (figuratively) and decided that whatever shall be shall be.

The Shed was doing their best last night under difficult circumstances. An incorrect slider order was corrected with the addition of the ordered sliders. When the last “homemade ding dong” had just been ordered prior to our order the newly selected dessert of apple streusel was accompanied by the profiteroles on their menu at no additional charge. All of the food was delicious.

I learned lessons last night, because well, I’m so out of practice. I know one thing for certain — I had a great time.

On Top Of Everything Else I’m Supposed To Be Going Out Of Town Tomorrow
Whew, it’s been a trying week — and not as bad for me as for many out there. Now that I’ve shifted my concentration from yesterday’s activities I now need to start thinking about packing for tomorrow’s trip to the Smoky Mountains — assuming we can get there. To say that I am a bit unprepared for this trip is an understatement. It’s not that there hasn’t been plenty of time to prepare, it’s that I’ve been too focused on other things (see also: work).

Happy Birthday ITP-Reader Bob
Having a July birthday and living in the Northern Hemisphere I’ve never had to deal with ice and snow on my birthday (which is July 22nd if you’re keeping score at home).

ITP-Reader Bob, whose birthday is today, has not been so lucky. I hope that you have an awesome day today, friend. Here’s to hoping that you either don’t have to work on your birthday, or at least your office is closed today thanks to this week’s incredibly foul weather.

My back is not happy with me about the snow shoveling either.

Happy Birthday Bob – we might have to reschedule that birthday burger at George’s to next week?

Where/why are you going to the Smoky Mountains?

I think today will be the crazy day on the roads with everyone tired of staying home…… most will be okay, people will speed up & then hit those icy patches……

  2. Laura says:

Unfortunately, not only does Bob have to work, he has to work at home with a two year old annoying him. Big props to him.

Homemade ding dong…whaaaaaaaaat? Do tell me more!

  3. A group of my Flickr friends and I have been planning a photography trip up near Pigeon Forge. The weather up there has been slightly better than ours, but there may be no guarantee that we can get there. The “go / no go” decision will be made tonight.

I think I’ve been cleared to work from home again (note to self: do some work!) though I’m admittedly feeling a bit guilty about my lack of output so I may just decide to take today as a paid day off.

I can’t tell you more about the home made ding dong because it sold out. ๐Ÿ™

  4. Barb says:

don’t waste those vacation days – you need to come to BRAG with us.

  5. Ha! I’m trying to make sure that my company sees me as a team player. I have bills to pay, you know…

  6. bob says:

Thanks for the birthday shout out!
Hasn’t been the best day so far, stuck at home for the third day attempting to work while a 2 year old who doesn’t understand “go away!” while I’m on the phone is running around like a kid possessed.
Once the roads clear up a bit I will take him to Laura’s office so I can get some peace and quiet and maybe get a little work done.

Barb, lets shoot for next Wednesday for a George’s burger.

I think tonight we will try to make it out to The Counter in Roswell, have you tried that yet? I’ts a bit pricey but the burgers are awesome!

  7. Good luck with that Bob. ๐Ÿ˜‰

I hear good things about The Counter though I’ve never had the opportunity to try it myself.

  8. Laura says:

…or the waffle house. We’ll see what’s open tonight ๐Ÿ™‚

  9. The Waffle House is always open! Might I suggest the t-bone steak, Bob? ๐Ÿ™‚

  10. Barb says:

Waffle House burgers aren’t too bad either. I do want to try The Counter, I doubt we will want to drive that far though, but you never know with Allan & his 4 wheel drive.

  11. Steve says:

So no one is asking the question… Paulie how was the “evening”?

(And Happy Birthday Bob!! Your birthday is easy to remember, as it’s a week after mine.)

  12. I gave as much detail as I’m willing to share with this statement

I learned lessons last night, because well, Iรขโ‚ฌโ„ขm so out of practice. I know one thing for certain รขโ‚ฌโ€ I had a great time.

  13. Steve says:

Good. No pressure. Glad you had a good time.

  14. Barb says:

went & found a mexican place on Cobb Pkwy for lunch – just the parking lots are really the only scary driving – mine has been highly entertaining (from my window seat).

And – it is snowing again right now……..

  15. Paulie [eatl/ga] says:

I’ve waddled my fat ass up to Holy Taco. As you might correctly guess Betsy is on her way (I had to twist her arm).

Walking is harder than driving today because no on shovels their sidewalk.

  16. Barb says:

after slip sliding around on my 4 mile walk, I’ve got some strange muscle aches in my legs too….. & yes, remember up north when you had to shovel your sidewalk as well as the driveway? (or maybe we just did?)
