I Identify With Misfit Toys

Well children, it’s that time of year again. Time for Old Saint Paulie to open up his bank accounts and spread his wealth throughout the land, buying himself lavish toys, and in the rare instance giving moneys to charities. If you’d like to help me with the latter then I’d love to hear about your favorite 501(c)3 charities. I don’t have much to spread this year (perhaps $500 just to keep one of my year’s goals), but I’m certain that there are charities who’d receive my money with thanks regardless of the donation size.

It’s Also Time For Rankin/Bass Specials!
Christmas is the time for many a tv special made in the olden days (read “when I was a wee little lad”). Sure Charles Shultz managed some good ones with his Peanuts cartoon, but when it comes to Christmas there were no better than those put out by Rankin/Bass.

You bet your sweet ass that I have all my favorites ripped to my hard drive and loaded up into iTunes just waiting to be viewed!

It’s odd that when I take many pictures on a weekend that I have sufficient stock to fill this space.

Anyone want to take a guess as to where this was shot? 😉

RIP: Max & Erma’s
For as long as I’ve lived in Atlanta (and it’s surrounding suburbs) there has been a Max & Erma’s near Perimeter Mall. It wasn’t until I started listening to internet radio in 1999/2000, specifically a station located in Dayton, Ohio, that I understood that Max & Erma’s was a folksy restaurant.

When my office relocated to its current god-forsaken location across from Perimeter Mall I decided that the time should finally come for me to eat at Max & Erma’s. Well I’ve missed my chance (not that I didn’t have four years to do it!) because the other morning I noticed that the one and only Max & Erma’s in Georgia has closed.

Ohio road trip anyone? I promise to stop in Skyline Chili as well.

You Can Call Me “Part Of The Problem”
I did not vote for the election of the next Mayor of the City of Atlanta. There, I said it.

I think that I’ve become like most Americans who don’t feel that his/her vote matters. What’s that you say? “This election was separated by hundreds of votes? This is why my vote counts?”

What if I were to say that I don’t like either of the candidates who were running for office?

What if I were to say that I hope to move from the City of Atlanta before the end of the next Mayoral term?

What if I were to say that holding elections on Tuesdays in an age where I commute thirty-to-ninety minutes to work, a full nine-hour workday at that, and that having a single place — located near my house — where I am allowed to cast my vote, is a fucked up way to perform what most people deem to be so damn important?

My forefathers fought to the right to vote.
They also fought for the right to express my opinion freely.

Stats & Goals
Daily
Current Mood – okay I guess
Current Music – listening to a CBC Radio3 podcast. I love Canadian music so much that I just may move there. Does it snow in Canada?
Website Of The Day – If you’ve uploaded shots to the internet and fear that someone is using them without your permission then try to see if Tin Eye can help you find the culprits. As for me I could only dream of taking shots worthy of theft.
Mode Of Transportation To Work – my car
Exercise (b)Log – nothing
Morning Weigh-In – didn’t check

Monthly
Foot Mileage – 0 miles, Wheel Mileage – 0 miles
Pushups – 0, Situps – 0
Consecutive Days Of Bed-Making (Longest Streak) – 4 (10)
Vegetarian Days – 0, Carnivorous Days – 1
Marta Rides – 0

December Goals
– Not get fired from my job

2009 Goals
– Reduce my weight to 190 pounds (today’s weight was 199.5 pounds)
– Completely read the book 1001 Paintings You Must See Before You Die
– Earn at least $150 through photography sales in order to cover the cost for the renewal of the Jalapeño Beach SmugMug account I opened the other day.
– Save $500 for the sole purpose of donating to charitable organizations of my choice
– Attend at least one professional photography workshop

The Unmeasurable
– Continue backing up all data, including the off-site storage
– Become a proficient programmer in Objective-C (iPhone development) and Ruby on Rails (Black Sheep web page concept)
– Do not create a solution for something which is not a problem

Cheers,
Paulie [eatl/ga]

You voted.. by not voting. And since you didn’t like either candidate, that seems appropriate. And I agree wholeheartedly that the ancient method currently used for casting votes is in need of updating.

Maybe that’s the software you need to be working on!!

I just hope that Kasim really tries to do some of the stuff he said he is going to. He just seems to “connected” to really make any changes. Only time will tell…..

And – in another Mayor race, I think Jere Wood won in Roswell (our own Four More Beers). That is good for cycling in Roswell.

I’ve eaten at that Max & Erma’s – it wasn’t anything special in my opinion, but it wasn’t bad either.

Martha may chime in about the roadtrip to Ohio for Skyline……. I’m thinking she may have had her fill Thanksgiving weekend.

  3. Martha says:

If you make the road trip I can hook you up with a really nice Filipino family, it won’t help you lose any weight but there might a single cousin lurking about they can fix you up with.

All I will say about Skyline was thank goodness they were closed Thanksgiving day.

I didn’t vote either, I had no option one way or the other. It seems like the city’s problems are too big for anyone at this point. I just hope when its all said and done (which may take even longer if a recount is held) that the mayor and the council will work together for some change.

My charitable donations this year have been pathetic, I think I’ll be writing a check to the Atlanta Food Bank, Basset Rescue and maybe one more (Red Cross?).

Oh yeah, I forgot to pimp my favorite charity, Samaritan House. They work on gettting people off the streets, trained in a skill and employed so they stay off the street.

And you can help them get a grant from Chase Bank via Facebook. Look at my status from a few days ago and follow the link.

  5. Martha says:

Ah, thanks for the reminder Steve…Nicholas House will get the third check.

  6. betsy says:

Props to Nicholas and Samaritan House–both fine organizations.

And take a look at http://www.heifer.org for alternative gift ideas.

I voted. (I have full faith in my candidate.Check out http://www.PaulieforMayor.com for more info)

I’m a big fan of the Albert T Mills school that operates out of the Ormewood Park Presbyterian. All I do is hope that Miss Rosa gets through to those kids before they turn into thugs!

  8. Smoove D says:

I ate at Max and Erma’s several times when I had the misfortune of working in oxymoronland. It wasn’t that exciting. Not bad, but not worth a roadtrip, either.
