It Took Two Weeks For Me To Start The Year Right

Did you get my MLK Jr. Day card in the mail? No? Huh, I sent it last week I guess it got lost in the mail. I hope that you are having a nice day off from work. As for me, I am in the office; I think that’s the way Dr. King would have wanted it…

ITP Flickr Pic
I didn’t actually take this picture, but since I star in it I think it’s okay for me to blog

Yes, I did forget to turn the flashlight off between drawing the ‘I’ and the ‘T’, my bad.

Live From The EARL
After doing some night shooting (camera style, which is where the picture shown above is from) with some Atlanta Flickrites I met up with some hashing friends to see the Mission Of Burma show at one of Playboy’s Top 10 Rock Clubs in America. As enjoyable as seeing a great band rock was meeting D.D.D.Dave before the show who somehow recognized me while I was standing in line.

I arrived somewhat late but my timing was good because the opening act, Some Soviet Station, had just left the stage and stagehands were getting things ready for Mission Of Burma.

The sold out crowd was much younger than I imagined it would be considering Mission Of Burma’s original shelf date spanned my high school days from 1979-1983. Don’t let their advancing age fool you (shit, they can’t be much older than me), these guys played two powerful sets of music that today’s bands should learn to emulate. Yes, they did take a fifteen or so minute intermission, but who cares? Not me. Oh and did I mention that the show was also a non-smoking (except for a few who chose to ignore the signs) show? Love. Those.

Hitting The Ground Running
Even getting home around 1:30am could not deter me from putting my feet into some running shoes and meeting up with my Sunday Morning Running Group. Since I have decided that I cannot currently run at the same pace as those in the group I showed up earlier than the rest and went out for a 7.5 mile run/walk. In the past I was never keen on the run/walk Galloway Method but right now it’s the only way that I can exercise so better it than nothing at all.

I even managed to tear myself away from the group after only two beers and headed home to watch some football. Could I possibly be taking this training thing seriously? Nah, not really.

Monsters Of The Midway
It’s January 15th so I have decided to put out a mid-month update on my goals for this month.

1) Lose two pounds. (starting weight 205 lbs)
The scale this morning read 203.5 lbs. Weight fluctuations occur all the time so even though I am very pleased I that the scale doesn’t indicate that I have gained weight I am far from declaring victory on this.

2) Run no fewer than fifty miles.
I ran Saturday and Sunday bumping my mileage from zero to 13.5 miles. Still a long way to go here (36.5 miles to be exact) but this is doable if I set my mind to it.

3) Do twenty push-ups and fifty sit-ups at least three times a week.
Two weeks into the month I have only done push-ups and sit-ups once. Hmmm, not good. I will strive to meet this goal for the remaining two weeks so I can at least declare partial success.

4) See Manchester Orchestra in concert. [FAILED]
I had one shot at this and failed. However in the end I think that I lucked out given the fiasco that occurred that night at The 585.

5) Read two books.
I’ve chosen two short books so I am well on my way to accomplishing this. Once I am done with the two that are underway I will see if I can get a third read by month’s end.

I Can’t Believe I Am About To Type This
I think that the New England Hateriots are going to be Super Bowl Champions. You heard it hear first, well perhaps not first but at least before the outcome has been decided.

And now for some ideas stolen from LiveJournal…
Current Mood – I should be happy, but I am not.
Current Music – Sirius Satellite Radio, Channel 26 playing Camper van Beethoven — “Take The Skinheads Bowling”
Website Of The DayIndexed is a though-provoking blog where each day the author draws a diagram on an index card and posts it. You probably have time today to go and read a bunch of these. I suggest that you do.
Training Target – don’t know
Exercise (b)Log – Fri; Sat; Sun — nothing; running/walking 6 miles; running/walking 7.5 miles

January Goals
1) Lose two pounds. (starting weight 205 lbs)
2) Run no fewer than fifty miles.
3) Do twenty push-ups and fifty sit-ups at least three times a week.
4) See Manchester Orchestra in concert. [FAILED]
5) Read two books.

Cheers,
Paulie [eatl/ga]

Ack! Now, how is this supposed to entertain me all day (the only other Atlantan working on this holiday)?! Okay, granted, you did give me a link that will, so I’ll use that.

But write more! Again! A Holiday Special, if you will. 2-for-the-price-of-1! (hey, it’s only a matter of time before they start making MLK Jr. Day a “sales holiday” anyway, and you’re usually ahead of the curve…)

    Demanding little sucker, ain’t I?

  2. CP says:

You’re not the only one working today. I would probably be better off in the long run if I actually accomplished something on this wonderful holiday, but I’ll probably just end up trying to kill the day without having to think much.

Oh wait, thats my goal everyday!

    – Crack

  3. Paulie [eatl/ga] says:

Uh oh, part of my post is missing! I am going to fix this now…

  4. Stacy says:

Well, damn. I feel a little better now — more to read! Thanks! [for those of you who see my bitching up there, Paulie had only 1/2 his post up earlier!!]

And howdy-ho to CP up there too! Haven’t seen you around these parts lately. As the only OTHER Atlantan working, you have any other tips for procrastination today? 🙂

(again, P, your blog is allll about community apparently!)

  5. CP says:

    Try http://www.addictinggames.com

Its a collection of flash and java games that no one in their right mind would pay for, but are none the less entertaining.

My phone keeps ringing…..why do people expect my cooperation today on this holy day?

  6. Oliver says:

Are you just saying that because of all of the Gators on the Pats? Are you torn when you see Gaffney and Jackson going against your Jets? I enjoy rooting for former Bulldogs in the NFL even if they are on teams I don’t necessarily care for.

  7. Paulie [eatl/ga] says:

Once Gators reach the NFL they are on their own. If I still had allegiance I think that I would be rooting for the Bears because of Rex Grossman.

I just happen to think that the Hateriots are the best playoff-caliber team remaining.

As a funny aside when I saw Oliver’s comment in gmail the accompanying Google link was http://www.RonMexico.com — LOL!

  8. Stacy says:

CP: woah! you’re my new best friend! I sure hope the company doesn’t expect any more work out of me today.

Paulie: I suppose I shouldn’t remind you that the Pats have always been “my AFC team.” I’m pulling for them on that side but I will root for the Bears to beat them (cause the Bears are making it to the Big Game too).

  9. Paulie [eatl/ga] says:

I can understand the Pats because their name shares the first two letters with the Packers, but the Bears? That’s the one that has me puzzled.

  10. Barb says:

Ask Enema for the polka CD with my one of my favorite polka tunes “The Bears Still Suck”. No Packer fan can like the Bears………
And yes – I’m working today as well – transportation does not stop for much of anything anymore.

  11. Stacy says:

Gotta go with the Bears: my NFC loyalties will always trump my AFC ones (I think even PE can agree with that!).

  12. Paulie [eatl/ga] says:

I think Enema might actually be anti-Bears, doncha know.

  13. Terri (SW) says:

Mission of Burma was amazing. Couldn’t hear jack the next day because I removed my earplugs like an idiot. Some Soviet Station…hmmm. We walked in, bought beer, walked out…took about five minutes to become “un-rattled.” Extremely loud and screechy. They announced it was their “one and only reunion show.” After we left, Afterbirth quipped “Well…they promised!”

  14. D.D.D. Dave says:

great meeting you too, I recognized you from the few pictures you have up, and from having way too much time on my hands at work.

    great show!

  15. Paulie [eatl/ga] says:

Earplugs? I’ve never subscribed to the theory of earplugs. I am sure that science will work a miracle on me someday.

  16. The Bears will pwn the Patriots just like they did back in the 1980s…

  17. Paulie [eatl/ga] says:

Smoove D, I am not sure that the Bears will pwn the Saints this weekend; and unlike most Bears fans I like Rex Grossman.
