And Now We Are Back…

I tried to blog earlier this morning, although not as early as I’d like because I slept late, and encountered a server error which thwarted my efforts. So, today may be short because I really need to get other things accomplished.

Shouldn’t It Now Be Called AppleWorld?
There wasn’t much Mac talk at MacWorld. By now you probably know that Apple announced “Apple TV” (ne “iTV) for watching iTunes content on your tv, and iPhone, the cell phone that will revolutionize the world. Many people believed that Apple would not call their phone iPhone because Cisco owns the Trade Mark for this name and just released their own product under that name. Apple is brash and said that they had worked an agreement with Cisco — news today says that they have not. Interesting…

More Dying In Atlanta — This Time It’s Restaurants
On a recent drive home I noticed three restaurants have closed that have been in Atlanta for at least as long as me (now twelve years). From my drive-by inspections it appears that Jock’s N Jill’s in Brookhaven has closed, and Grady’s and St. Charles Deli on North Druid Hills / Briarcliff have definitely closed.

I am not sure what this says about the areas, changes in the economy, or what but I found it strange that three seemingly successful long-time restaurants would go belly up.

My RealiTV
Last night I caught two RealiTV shows.

I started with an attempt to watch “Beauty and the Geek.” Hmmm, I am not sure about this one. I know some of you out there like it, but I am not entire sold. Is is because I don’t find most of the women on the show attractive? I’ve never been one for the “blonde bombshell Pamela Anderson” look. I know that it’s not that I related to the geeks, hell I am no Casanova but I’ve had far more interaction with women then they have. btw- That Scooter dude should go to indie rock shows. He looks a lot like most of the kids there, certainly he get laid then..

Show number two was a return to Top Chef. At least to me last night’s episode was a snoozer. For those who care Marcel has lived to see another day because missing-wisdom-teeth-chipmunk-cheek Micheal was asked to pack his knives and leave.

And now for some ideas stolen from LiveJournal…
Current Mood – alright
Current Music – Sirius Satellite Radio, Channel 26 playing The Fratellis — “Chelsea Dagger”
Website Of The Day – I must admit that I don’t know who Mark Sisson is, but he has a pretty decent health related blog called Mark’s Daily Apple.
Training Target – don’t know
Exercise (b)Log – 20 push-ups, 50 sit-ups, 100 jumping-jacks — it’s not much I know, but at least it’s a start

January Goals
1) Lose two pounds. (starting weight 205 lbs)
2) Run no fewer than fifty miles.
3) Do twenty push-ups and fifty sit-ups at least three times a week.
4) See Manchester Orchestra in concert. [FAILED]
5) Read two books.

Cheers,
Paulie [eatl/ga]

Regarding “Beauty and the Geek”: The folks on the first season were much more geekier and the women more diverse in appearance (and, well, stupider [sic] too). It seems these guys, though considered geeks, aren’t quite as socially inept or insecure as the ones last season. (BTW, I didn’t watch last season until a couple weeks ago when it was marathoned on VH1.)

Also, you can tell there’s a ringer in there for the guys. I bet as long as this show is on, there will always the one guy who before the makeover no one considers attactive and then he ends up becoming a little hottie when they shave him and/or cut his hair.

The tasks this year are different too. A museum tour? Stand up comedy? I couldn’t do those things either! How does that make someone stupid or inept? They’re changing the winning formula a little. If you didn’t watch last year, I can see where you’d be hesitant about it.

I didn’t know that there was a ringer amongst the group.

I felt smart because I knew the answers to both questions they asked the guys. The one dude who realized that the conversation was the key to the challenge was clever.

I felt stupid because I forgot Buzz Aldrin’s name.

This was the first time I’ve ever seen the show. I’ll give it one more viewing but make no guarantees after that.

Don’t Amazing Race & Survivor start up again soon for your RealTV needs? And, more importantly, Jack Bauer is back as of Sunday, and Heroes is back soon after that. If you aren’t on those 2 bandwagons…….. you need to be.

  4. Paulie [eatl/ga] says:

I gave up on 24 in the first season (long story). I’ve never watched Heroes.

I’ll have to look into when Survivor and The Amazing Race start again.

OK—I’ll admit that last night’s Beauty and the Geek was lacking. You’re the 2nd person I recommended it to that isn’t so fond of it. Maybe the novelty is wearing off, or maybe this season’s beauties and geeks aren’t as endearing as in the past! Scooter is annoying to me for some reason. I like the dude with the ‘classic’ Nintendo controller tattooed on his forearm and, though he’s a bit hippie lookin, I like the Star Wars band dude. I’ll keep recording the show, but likely read the internet and multi-task while I watch it!
Now wait—who do you (STACY-or anyone) think IS the ‘ringer’? Maybe multitasking while it’s playing has kept me from noticing think ‘ringer!’ Wait—I’ll bet she means the star wars dude?!! Ditto regarding Buzz Aldrin’s name—I’m a dork.

I missed Armed and Famous last night, but the DVR is set to record it next time, it looks interesting. Stars (or almost stars like LaToya Jackson, Ponch (sp?) from C.H.I.P.s, and Jack Osborne) become real cops in a small Midwestern town. A talk show host, whose opinion I usually agree with, said it was real good.

So—what book ARE you reading—or genre–you don’t have to be too specific—fiction or non? Good or bad thus far?? All this TV is makein’ me feel stoopider.

I can’t watch “Armed and Dangerous.” I hate shows like that, especially when they “star” washed up celebrities.

I am now reading two books, one pseudo-technical, one not. They are both short so I will be picking up a novel next. The pseudo-technical book is “The Digital Photography Book” and the other is “Quirkyalone.”

When I move to the next book it will most likely be something from David Sedaris, Carl Hiassen, or Nick Hornby.

  7. Stacy says:

Hola, Lottie! (awww, Paulie, now you have us talking to each other!) 🙂 And to whoever else is watching BATG.

The ringer this season? My guess is it’ll be Star Wars band dude, the one with the big beard and curly hair. The girls are already saying how sweet he is, he’s pretty outgoing already and, honestly, he’s not bad looking…you just can’t see him through all of that hair!

If nothing else http://www.InsideThePerimeter.com attempts to build community. 🙂

  9. Solvig (or Lotte or Engelbertha or Giselle or what ever I feel like) says:

You can add ‘community building’ to yer resume!!
    Re: 24–Meow—Jack Bauer is hot!
Re: Ringer-I figured ya’ll meant Star Wars dude—I could sort of see it.
Re: Armed and Dangerou–it’s OK I guess—I did learn that LaToya (sp?) Jackson has a real fear of cats—like phobic and freaky!!
Re: Reading–I’ve started Hiassen’s ‘Skinny Dip’ two times and haven’t been able to get into it. I put it aside for a silly (i.e. easy to read and farcical without trying to be) Stuart Woods book. The main character in many of his books is ‘Stone Barrington!’ Just reading that name CRACKS ME UP!! The character is in his late 50’s or early 60’s (like the author), but Stone hooks up with young women, drives fancy cars and only drinks single malt scotch.
My main character’s name would be…Shiny Bright. She would ONLY drink Ouzo and drive a lime green Smart Car and hook up with hot young men. I like my fantasy life so far…

Shoot–forgot to mention—there’s a quirkyalone website—you’ve prolly seen it. I found it a while ago when I realized that Album 88 no longer has their “NOT LOVE” songs on V-day (way back in time). They used to play PIL’s ‘This is Not a Love Song,’ and you could dedicate a dislike (or hate) song to the person you don’t like. It was great—I don’t know why they don’t do that anymore?!

  11. Paulie [eatl/ga] says:

@WhateverYourNameIsNow: Well done! I’ve read at least one of Hiassen’s books and enjoyed it. I started another at one point and put it down because I couldn’t get into it. I have two others in my collection that are on the ridiculously-large “To Be Read” pile.
