I Shall Not Call It Hallowe’en

It has become popular recently to return to the old style of spelling today’s holiday. I shall not do so, for me this holiday will always be spelled Halloween.

I don’t much care for Halloween any longer. I used to throw a party each year, but that started conflicting with other events so I’ve given up.

Seven Halloweens ago my friends Stacey, Sandy, and Tamara came over to decorate my house for a party. This skeleton, which does a “pee dance” pose on the door to the bathroom, has not been taken down since.

Skeleton Pee Dance

To me this is pure comedy gold!

Who Needs Four Bands On A Weeknight? (or The Song Remains The Same)
Man, I think that live music is either out to kill me or prove that I am getting older.

Last night there were four bands on the bill at Variety Playhouse, Tilly And The Wall were the headliners. Of course the show started later than advertised, and by the time Tilly And The Wall took the stage it was nearly midnight.

The first band to take the stage was an all-girl Canadian band called Pony Up! If not for the fact that I thought that the lead singer was adorable I probably would have not liked the band. After a few songs each one sounded like the other and I grew bored.

Mew was the next band up. As the sound check was being performed I heard a guy next to me tell another guy “our guitars just arrived at the airport”. Keep this statement in mind… Mew, who has one big song on the radio now (99x was touting this show and if It’s On Sirius was still worth a shit I’d find out what the title is) and all the kids packed the theater to see their set. Mew’s sound is loud and polished, why they are not headlining their own tour confused me, and why they were second on this bill confused me further. Having said that Mew’s sound grew old to my old ears after about four songs and I was ready for something different.

Third up? The Black Keys Lips. Hey, there’s the guy who mentioned his guitar at the airport! I’m going to have to say it… they sound like a lousy Beatles cover band and I thought that they had the least talent of those to take the stage. My theory about the night’s performance order was that Mew and The Black Keys Lips got flip-flopped thanks to the delayed equipment. Further, buy the time these guys took the stage at least one-quarter of the audience had left the building. I’ll move on…

Finally, Tilly And The Wall… They came out in costumes, why not by the time they started it was Halloween. They were ready to rock, and I was about to catch a second-wind. I had only heard a few of Tilly And The Walls songs on Sirius so I wasn’t all that sure what to expect. As I had heard their percussion is supplied by a tap-dancing girl (there is one person who probably never worries about her weight) and it worked surprisingly well. I stuck around until about 12:20am when I had to remind myself that I was gainfully-employed and needed to be awake at a fairly respectable hour today. I liked what I heard although I started to wonder if like the bands which proceeded them I would have grown tired of their sound.

Maybe I am getting old…. Nah!!!!

Music Two Nights In A Row?
Maybe. Tonight I am going to head down to Center Stage to see if I can get a ticket to see Secret Machines. I haven’t pre-purchased a ticket because I didn’t want to feed the TicketBastard monster and can avoid it by purchasing a ticket at the box office. It’s a gamble to wait until the night of the show, but it’s a gamble I am willing to take for this show.

If for some reason I cannot get a ticket, I’ll might take the camera around midtown and do some night shooting. although as I look at the weather forecast it doesn’t look like it will be the best night to do so.

CD Pick Of The Week
None, I have had no time to review anything. Sorry. Maybe you should tell me what I should be buying this week.

And now for some ideas stolen from LiveJournal…
Current Mood – rushed
Current Music – Sirius Satellite Radio, Channel 26 playing Gomez — “Whipping Piccadilly”
Website Of The Day – You have 365 days to search Trick or Treat to be ready for next Halloween.
Exercise (b)Log – none

Cheers,

  2. D.D.D.Dave says:

dude, hate to be the corrections guy, but that was The Black Lips that you didn’t like, not The Black Keys…

The Black Keys are playing there with The Black Angels sometime this month.

…yes, that’s right, the black keys, with the black angels.

  3. Paulie [eatl/ga] says:

Crap, I knew I should have double-checked that! Thanks D.D.D.Dave for the correction.

  4. headed to center stage complex myself for the beck show upstairs.
    maybe i’ll see you there.

  5. Smoove D says:

Dude, now you have to go to the Black Keys show so you will know the difference next time!

I saw the Black Lips a long time ago opening for someone else (probably 3d5spd) and was also less than impressed.

@FAB: Wasn’t feeling like going out so I hung in the hood. Hope Beck was awesome, and most will question my sanity when I tell that I passed on the opportunity to go.

@Smoove D: Unfortunately I will miss The Black Keys because I am planning on heading out camping that day.
